ur visual instruction is the best thing you can do for ppl like me that have no idea when reading pattern Im a visual learner. Thank you for helping ppl like me who love to crochet n advance our knowledge....
This tutorial is how I made my first ever crochet project almost a decade ago. I remember how calming Michaels voice is in this tutorial and I’m so happy I was able to find it again! Thank you Michael for inspiring me all those years ago!!
Mikey, I've been crocheting since I was 8. By my calculations that is over 60 years ago... I've made hundreds of beanies and hats, afghans, scarves etc.. etc.. I can not follow patterns and I really wanted to learn how to make all of these wonderful stitch patterns. Thank you for making this so easy and helping me to follow patterns as I can read the pattern as you talk. You're never too old to learn a new trick. :)
yup you got it :) if you link on the website link it will take you there and then you can access the written patterns from there .....We are updating our website so if its not coming up or your having trouble with it this is why ...but it will be back up in the next few weeks .....Cathy :)
this hat pattern is for an adult/teen so it should be a perfect fit for your 18 yo son.If you use the same ply yarn and 2 strands but do hdc thats fine the only difference is the hdc stitch is longer than the sc so you wont need as many rows as Mikey does to complete the hat. To make the height of the hat (how long it is top to bottom) just stitch your rows around using hdc's until the height measures about 9 in and that will fit him just fine Happy holidays cathy@ the crochet crowd helpdesk :)
Well, that was AWESOME (except for the ruined scissors :-D part!!) How kind of you to make this tutorial & I loved the color choices & yarn example. You are one of my 3 favorite people from whom I watch & learn crochet...THANK YOU!!!
Hi sorry for the late response, I undid it and made it again and it came out great!! Gave it to my honey for Christmas and he loves it!!! Thank you for such a great tutorial and responding to my request : D
hey there ....this pattern calls for using two strands of yarn together at the same time and is done in sc this is why the stitches are tight and it may be a little hard to see them. Plus If you are one of those crocheters that stitch tighter than others on top of that this also may be a factor so maybe try to loosen up your stitches a little bit to make it easier on you...
You r awesome n teaching Mike..I think all men that r n the closet knitting n crocheting should join n male club..n each one teach one..pay it forward..its a huge stress relief n men will live longer w out stress..or join a club w a couple of men w women too..great conversations ❤❤❤❤❤
to get the correct size hat yes its essential to use 2 strands for this pattern....if you would rather not use two strands of yarn search for this tutorial series on youtube "Crochet-Beanie Hat 1 Winter Adult Teenager" is a beanie hat but it only using one strand of yarn to make the hat cathy@ the crochet crowd help desk
Mikey, that's so much for doing such an easy to follow tutorial. I'm relatively new to crocheting and found this so so easy to follow, I to made it for the man in my life😉
a 5mm hook is a bit smaller than a 5.5mm so if you use a smaller hook sz this will make your hat come out a bit smaller than the one in Mikey's tutorial....cathy@ the crochet crowd helpdesk :)
if yours seems bigger than mikeys but you have all your stitches right it may be the thickness of your yarn is thicker than his or your hook is bigger ...what are oyu using?? cathy@ the crochet crowd helpdesk
If your still having trouble you might want to try Mikey's other hat pattern tutorial that he has on youtube... if you search "adult/teen hat mikeyssmail" on youtube a video will pop up that shows mikey making a black and red hat using one strand of yarn and a hdc and this might be easier for you to work up.... hope that helps ....cathy@ the crochet crowd helpdesk :)
If you only use one strand of yarn instead of two for this particular project the size of the hat will be effected since you are thinning out the amount of yarn your using....mikey has another hat video that only uses one strand called "adult/ teenager beanie hat mikeyssmail" its a red and black hat in the video....hope that helps....cathy@ the crochet crowd helpdesk :)
Thanks, I know this beanie will be warm it is so thick. I guess it's the double stranding and the single crocheting. That's a good thing though, because I like warmth.
@grammi24 Hello..... I just looked around at my stash to see what the paper band on the mosaic yarn says but I don't have one.....i am pretty sure it is considered a 4ply though..... you could try one strand of 4ply yarn instead of 2 to see if you like how it comes out.... and yes follow the tutorial the same....if you find it's coming out smaller using one strand of yarn you may have to add rounds to the hat or go up a hook sz to make it bigger!!! .... cathy@ mikeys helpdesk :)
Hello!! I love love love watching all your videos and you have really taught me a lot. Thank you so much for everything you do. I have only been crocheting for about a year or so now and have tons of things I am ready to learn. My friend wants me to make him a hat with lettering in it.(like a name) I know how to filet crochet but how could you do that using different colors instead of having the big spaces? Or would you suggest making letters separate then attaching the letters? lots of love
If you go to the video for the black and red hat under this title "Crochet-Beanie Hat 3 Adult Teenager" this is where the instructions start then just change the number in the title to the next number in the search bar until your hat is complete ....don't click the red link box or it will take you too the 2 string tutorial ....the red box will disappear soon after he starts the instructions....cathy@the crochet crowd heldepsk
yeah I used 5 mm yarn twice, so like you did, which makes it twice as big (and looks like a barret at one side now), but can I somehow change the form without starting over again? thank you very much for the advice :D
Word to the wise...he messed up on the editing at the very beginning, and so he does row 2 twice...it is confusing at first. But, if you can get past that and figure out that he edited it wrong, then the rest of the video is the best tutorial out there!
Jenny Thomas it’s increasing, so yeah, first row he doubles up, then next row he doubles every other one, and next row after that he doubles every third one, and so on until you are through with the increasing rows. I generally stop the increasing rows when my work matches the size of my hand with all my fingers fully extended. I hope that helps 💕
I don't know if my stitches are too tight or what but my hat is too small. I am using 4-ply worsted yarn with a 5.5mm hook and any hat pattern I do will come out kid sized
mikey, i love your tutorials! i've learned so much from you and i'm hoping to make my own crochet videos for crochet-alongs in the future. i wanted to ask you for tips on how to get your camera to take a good shot in front of you, like how you shoot your tutorials. are you just using a tripod? thanks in advance :)
if you don't use two strands of yarn the size of the hat wont come out right ...using two strands makes the 4ply yarn thicker without both strands the hat won't work up right for this pattern...cathy@the crochet crowd
Hi, so i follow every step that you did but I don't understand why my beanie is wavy shaped. I am at the 11:00 part. Can you tell me why or am i using the wrong tools?
I was wondering what is the size of hat/head this fits? Measurements ? I am wanting to do this for my 18 yr old son . Want it to fit snug like a beanie.. Will this work for him? I can't measure him cause it's for Xmas. Also could I use the same yarn and the 2 strands like u did and do this in hdc's instead of sc's and have it turn out same? Thank u :) please respond today quickly if u don't mind as it is for Xmas for him :)
I went to find the tutorial for the one strand beanie (the black and red one), and a screen pops up at the beginning of the video with a link to the video with all of the steps in one video, BUT that link keeps taking me back to the two strand video. Also, I can't find all of the video clips to have the complete instructions to make that beanie.
I disagree after printing the pattern off and going over it,and his explanation I understood and pattern quiet well and interpreting some patterns can be difficult for me some times.
Is it just me, or did he jump past row 12? I was working on 12 with him, and suddenly he said his calculations were on row 13.... I don't want to frog 2 strands, I'm pulling from the centre and the outside of the skein 😒
Wondering if anybody else’s is watching in 2018 ? It’s a very beautiful beanie but how many stitches do you have at the end you don’t even say how many stitches you have after each round very confusing
Do you have an email address where I could ask you a direct question and be sure that I get an answer directly to my email address? I ask this because I wouldn't know where to find your reply as you have many sites. thank you, nancy
For one thing, you're going against your own instruction in the Kurtzy Crochet videos. You said not to use too small a hook with bigger yarn. Mosaic is worsted weight, which would be superbulky if two strands are held together. You'd need a K hook at least. Maybe an N.
It's frustrating to crochet along with you, then at the end you say, The pattern's wrong but I'm not going to fix it. Just add 8 stitches to the bottom. This gives it an ugly bell shape. It would have been better to retape the video chaining 15 in the circle instead or better yet, going up one or two crochet hook sizes. It's the wrong size hook for double strands anyway.
Your site has a few patterns I'd like to do but even though I'm advanced, I simply cannot follow you verbal instructions. You use too much assumption and are not concise in the way you verbalized patterns
I'm clearly not the teacher for you. There are lots of great TH-cam Hosts. You will probably connect with another host that has patterns you love and can speak in a way that is better for you.

Absolutely love this tutorial. After a week trying (im a beginner) I finally got it with this one...thank you!

@grammi24 ... Mosaic claims it is like a 4ply worsted but it's a bit thinner... you can double up the 4ply worsted if you want to.
thanks for the explaining this so simply. Now I understand. Thanks for sharing your gift with us.

oh. I used the slip circle to get my hats done...have you ever considered doing that rathe then the single hole and making the initial ring?

@@Daisychain523 this is an old thread. So I don't know if I'll get a reply. But is his 2:2 ratio? 2 in every stitch?

@@angelloupe8142 thank you so much dear!! Very kind of you to clarify. His ratio makes sense now!
@L08Jim Mine was doing the same thing, so I just pulled it out and started over and it worked fine. Maybe I was missing somthing. Good luck
i wanted to use the amazing yarn should i double or triple it
Thanks Mina
The hat is beautiful, however, I don`t fancy the "travelling seam". Is there another method of joining where the seam is invisible. Thanks.
I don't know if my stitches are too tight or what but my hat is too small. I am using 4-ply worsted yarn with a 5.5mm hook and any hat pattern I do will come out kid sized
hello....not sure what you mean by wavy?? Let me know if you still need help and I will try to help you....cathy@ the crochet crowd ;)
mikey, i love your tutorials! i've learned so much from you and i'm hoping to make my own crochet videos for crochet-alongs in the future. i wanted to ask you for tips on how to get your camera to take a good shot in front of you, like how you shoot your tutorials. are you just using a tripod? thanks in advance :)
Hi. Thank you for sharing your work. May I ask what color you used for the greenish/brown hat shown at the beginning? Thanks
U make crochet look easy
:)thx for sharing
For row 16 where you are eyeballing the clock: 12,9,6 and 3 to increase, what about in row 11 doing a 9 to 2 ratio, then work on the length?
i was wondering if you had to do it with 2 strands because i only have 1 ball of yarn with me
hey so what would the diffrence be if i used a 5 mm hook and not a 5.5?
I’m looking for a fast easy male crochet hat starting with the brim first
Hey Mickey, can I use the magic circle for this beanie?
thanks
if you don't use two strands of yarn the size of the hat wont come out right ...using two strands makes the 4ply yarn thicker without both strands the hat won't work up right for this pattern...cathy@the crochet crowd
Hi there, I am new to this too, I'm currnetly at the 4 to 2 ratio, but it kind of looks like mine is growing a lot faster than yours. Can you help me?
Hi, so i follow every step that you did but I don't understand why my beanie is wavy shaped. I am at the 11:00 part. Can you tell me why or am i using the wrong tools?
Great tutorial!
I'm restarting mine after the 7th revolution because it was too wavy... what can I do to prevent this? what am I doing wrong?
Thank you!

Hello thank you for this tutorial
I am new to this, i can't tell one stitch from another lol am i making it too tight?
I went to find the tutorial for the one strand beanie (the black and red one), and a screen pops up at the beginning of the video with a link to the video with all of the steps in one video, BUT that link keeps taking me back to the two strand video. Also, I can't find all of the video clips to have the complete instructions to make that beanie.
Thank you so much for the video :)
What weight of yarn is being used in this video??
I didn't really want to. Is it essential?
Does this beanie actually take 200 grams of yarn?
I disagree after printing the pattern off and going over it,and his explanation I understood and pattern quiet well and interpreting some patterns can be difficult for me some times.
Is it just me, or did he jump past row 12? I was working on 12 with him, and suddenly he said his calculations were on row 13.... I don't want to frog 2 strands, I'm pulling from the centre and the outside of the skein 😒
Wondering if anybody else’s is watching in 2018 ? It’s a very beautiful beanie but
how many stitches do you have at the end you don’t even say how many stitches you have after each round very confusing
Here in 2018. And I agree very confusing for this not so new beginner crocheter
where the heck is "more information" that Mickey talks about where one can view the written pattern and save it. thanks and of course I love your vids

Mikey doesn't answer much and verbally likes to joke how imperfect he is until someone calls him out on it.
