    Excellent in every way, thank you. Steinbeck was a master at descriptive writing.

    Immediately know this wasn’t written by a woman by the “be breasts swelled passionately” line

    • @dubonmot6407
      @dubonmot6407  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Totally agree! These kinds of line are not far removed from something like "Her breasts breasted breastily."

    Curious choice of flower for this story. Chrysanthemum symbolize gratitude, happiness and love. Is it meant to mean Elisa should be grateful for what she has? Or is it symbolic of the old flowers being thrown out as if to say some old happiness she didn’t know she had or wanted was gone in place of the new sprouts? I am unsure. Perhaps I will listen again to get a better understanding.

      Arguably both. But the saddness we feel when she discovers the things to which she has devoted so much time, attention and expertise discarded like garbage is what breaks our heart. Steinbeck knew the American spirit like no other author of his generation. He knew the unsung, uncelebrated, ignored and invisible life of the American woman when very few worked outside the home. The daily routines of cooking, cleaning and caring that came with an entire career of self effacement were relieved by the arts and artistry of women themselves. Sewing, quilting, needlework, and gardening became expressions of the soul. It wasn't her flowers that he discarded; it was so much more.

      @@savageboy22 Usually, I would speed up audiobooks. But his pace is fast enough. And when it is speed up it is hard to actually catch it all. It's a nice fast pace.
      A slow pace can be good too when done with dynamics rather than completely evenly. A lot of slower ones sound like drones though.

      Not all books have the same style of conveying info.
      Best to read between the lines.
      Be aware of what is inferred and /or implied above and beyond the surface .
      Some readers are happy to have had their curiosity stimulated.
      Good luck.
