There’s a theory that this whole fiasco was planned because even a blind person could see how shit that original design was. The CGI artists could’ve easily made Sonic look gorgeous from the start, but they wanted to try out a more realistic approach first as a rough draft with the animal-like design which was clearly a terrible idea. They may have even expected the backlash and it could also explain why they actually “listened to us” and reverted back to the animated character design based on the modern games. This was either an entire marketing ploy or at least a Plan B.
Everyone's talking about the new design (which i can indeed confirm is "a little ball of energy in an extremely handsome package"), and I'm just here like "wait, wasn't green hill just a real life live action road in the first trailer?"

This movie will probably not be great, but i almost feel obligated to see it just to show appreciation for the fact that they listened to the fans and changed it.
About Robotnik, I feel like this movie is more like an origin story for Robotnik than it is for Sonic. From the last trailer we saw how far he devolves into his cartoon version with the bushy mustache and red costume, so whatever energy he is harnessing is slowly turning him into the Dr. Robotnik we know and love to hate.
Wow, I completely agree with Rick AND Eric in this video. I loved the Super Mario Bros movie (partially BECAUSE it did its own thing), and the Sonic movie would be much, much better if it was set in Sonic's world instead of the real world.
the weight thing with jim carrey's robotnik is, this is his 1st encounter with sonic. once his obsession hits, and sonic goes back to his world, robotnik will follow him through the portal. then "after X years" then we get to the games with robotnik who has turned the woodland creatures into robots/androids with sonic saving them.

I get why you'd be upset of having most of the movie being on Earth, but I think Sonic running around from location to location will make up for that (the Great Wall of China, Desert, I know he runs through Paris, etc.)

Looks way better than the terrible first trailer. But this still looks quite bad imo. It went from a 2/10 to a 4/10 for me.
