I looked into genetic counseling during undergrad. I had limited experience with healthcare in general with only some research experience. I came across genetic counseling again from a youtuber's channel. I'm glad I looked more into it and realized it wasn't a good fit and that it was as difficult to get into as MD medical schools. My parents are near retirement age and I don't really want to take that long. I'm starting an accelerated nursing program in January.
Hey Alice! I am so glad you found an alternative to genetic counseling that fit what you were looking for. Wishing you the best with your accelerated nursing program! Katie
I'm an MPH Public Health Genetics student at UW and I love it! I'm planning to apply to GC programs afterward, but there are so many career paths with just the MPH as well.
@@katieleecgctalksgeneticcou6248 I think I might have more insight to share after I complete my practicum this summer, but I'd definitely be open to an interview!
Hi Emily! My name is Hemali! And I recently just got interested in MPH genetics!! I was wondering if you’re available (and comfortable ofc!) to either email or call me so I can ask you some questions? Thank you so much!! Hope to hear from you! :)
I just found out about genetic counseling. I was thinking of switching my career path as I was originally planning on getting a PhD in Neuroscience. I am an alumni from UCSD (great school) with a degree in neurobiology, a 3.51 GPA, Hispanic (I don't know if this actually matters haha), and have worked as research associate at a molecular lab. It seems rather difficult to find in-depth admission stats for GC programs, but given my background do you think I could have a chance at getting into one GC program? Unfortunately, I haven't shadowed any professionals on the field but I am planning on contacting a few genetic counselors to see if that would be an option. Thank you so much!
@@theshinythings123 As Lauren said, there's still a focus on genetics. She said the comparison is working with broad demographics vs one-on-one. So, imagine all of the different levels of public health and the many ways we are looking at the impact of our genetics. I also considered UW as a contingency and think it makes a lot of sense for people who are interested in the broader effects, regulation of testing and treatments; working as a consultant, in public service, in research. And, of course, with GCs.
Hello Katie!! This video was amazinggg and I thank you and Lauren so much for this video!! It was very informative and I was wondering if there was any way I could get in touch with Lauren to ask her some questions! I am very interested in MPH genetics and it’s hard to get information! Hi Hemali, feel free to send me an email at lauren.spor@pitt.edu :) There's also a student panel video on the Public Health Genetics Week website here: phgw.org/videos/
Do you have to go through at Match Program for Genetic Counseling Programs? Or can you apply to schools individually? I am planning on starting Prerequisite classes in the Fall for my MS in Genetic Counseling because my goal is to become a Genetics Counselor so I can impact others that are confused the way I was impacted when I found out about my Genetic Syndrome in 1996 (then in 2012). Also, do you suggest making Personal Statements unique to school's? One of the schools (the main one I am planning on applying to) I hope to do Research and possibly work in clinic with a specific doctor because I know she has done alot of research on a topic I hope to be able to research as well (and I also want to gain experience giving presentations/speaking at conferences/to Medical Students) with her.
Great Question! If you are applying to GC schools in the US or Canada, the only way to apply is through the NMS for Genetic Counseling Match (natmatch.com/gcadmissions-landing.html). Even if you only want to apply to one school you will still go through this website to rank and potentially match just like everyone else. There is no alternative. Yes, your personal statements must be unique as they need to answer the unique prompts each school provides. They will overlap quite a bit though so you won't have to create them from scratch each time. I recommend starting to learn more about genetic counseling by trying for some informational interviews and attending webinars so you can learn more about the career while completing your pre-reqs!
@@katieleecgctalksgeneticcou6248 Thanks I know one school has a separate application for their program individually (Sophos) through the school of public health but then its a genetic counseling program within that (so they do not participate in the match program) and other program I am looking at does participate so I was a little bit confused.
Also, how can I access webinars? And thanks for the advice on the Informational Interviews. I will definitely look into doing some to learn more about the field.

Hi Katie! I am currently a PhD student in Canada, focusing in research of breast cancer genetics and genomics. My question is: can I still become into a genetic counselor? Will my PhD degree and research experience be useful for this? I would love to know your opinion. If you have social media, it would be my pleasure to follow you. Thank you very much for creating these fascinating videos. I will subscribe now to your channel!
Hi Jose! That would be an excellent educational experience to pursue genetic counseling and will definitely help you to stand out against the competition. I have definitely met a handful of GCs who completed their PhD prior to applying to grad school for GCing. Thanks for watching! I'll be posting more tips for applying in the coming months!

You can get a diversity scholarship. Look up scholarships there’s one in the New England area.
What is the career out look for a degree like this? What kind of jobs would be available related to this degree?
I think I am going to have to find a graduate who is working in the field because I would love to learn more too. Stay tuned.
@@katieleecgctalksgeneticcou6248 hi! Have you been able to find information on this since?
