    I was born in 1951 to an AF pilot who had served in Europe. His subsequent career was largely in Japan, so a large part of my childhood was spent there from 1953- 1965. I'm loving this.

      I'd call them propaganda films, and I don't mean that to be negative.

    I used to think that the Japanese armed forces existed to fight giant reptiles, LOL.

      Giant reptiles are actually representations of the horrors they suffered in WWII. I know about the horrors they caused, of course. The thing is: almost all of those who caused were not in Japan when they were bombed.

      from time to time, they still let families do it. Its usually a route from two domestic ports, like Hawaii to San Diego or San Diego to Seattle

    Nice piece of nostalgia. Interesting to note that no mention is made of observing the rule of the road. Japanese drive on the opposite side of the road et to the USA ie as in the UK! As transport would have cost next to nothing for someone to drive you around, I doubt servicemen would have driven themselves unless it was for work. Also early days dictated little or no fraternization as in Germany, by allied / occupying; troops. 👀👍

    I was born in Japan in 1956 just one year prior to the release of this movie. For better or worse, Japan in 1957 was really Japan if compared with today`s Japan. And, from the viewpoint of today`s Japanese male, Japanese women in this film looked very feminine and submissive. No wonder many American servicemen were crazy about Japanese girls.

    Should've made one of these for Blackwater over on Iraq 50 years later.
    Would've gone a long way to earn respect by showing respect, instead of reaping affront by sowing arrogance and disregard for a foreign culture....

    They are trying to make Japan look like a poor developing nation and why are all the sailors traveling together they're bassicly all co-workers to each other.

    • @Spaghetter813
      @Spaghetter813 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      "Japanese industry is far ahead of the rest of Asia and ranks with the leading industrial powers of the world."
      "The Japanese have worked hard building and repairing highways and the good ones rank with the best of our country"
      This is 1957. They show the more modern and the more traditional aspects of the country which and give a fairly accurate picture of the 50s. Not the bombed-out ruins of the occupation period but not yet the level of prosperity of the 1960s. They show poor farms but also a rich central Tokyo. Yet somehow you feel this is an attempt to make Japan look like third world country?
      Furthermore, why wouldn't they be traveling together? Most of the enlisted are probably there with no family and are only acquainted with each other. Furthermore. only one is wearing a sailor's uniform so the sailors are not in fact traveling together.

    • @mcaesario
      @mcaesario 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Spaghetter813 agreed. A third world country won't be depicted as industrial, crafty, and active as this Japan

    One thing i noticed in Japan is no tolerance for crime of any description. Theres even vending machines out on the street. In the west they would be broken into or vandalized
