Having loved the Carpenter´s version for over 40 years, today I heard this for the first time and am blown away. She has so much more hurt in her restrained vocals. It´s a very different and much sadder song. I really love it.

I love learning new things. I, of course, love The Carpenters version of this song. Didn't know or didn't remember that Carole King wrote it until a while back. Karen's awesomely smooth vocals, Richard's great arrangement, made their version uniquely their own. Well, Carole has done the same thing. It's as if she is sitting at her home piano and singing to relax and chill after a long day. Both verions warrant a listen---- once or more times!!!!

Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion but, for me, this version is far superior. Ms. King's emotion here is readily apparent and I think it is clear that the song had special meaning for her. Also, cleaner arrangement

Loved the Carpenters' version of this. Didn't even discover this version till some 20 years later after hearing Karen's voice. Their version has a very nice, easygoing and carefree feel to it, which reflects the 70's perfectly. But there's something about Carole's plaintive vocal that just stays with you long after the song fades. I concede this version to be the slightly better of the two. Or better yet if I say it's No.1 then the Carpenters' version is 1a.

    • @BrooklynNYguy
      @BrooklynNYguy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Karen Carpenter had a more mellifluous singing voice than Carole King, although Carol King had an excellent singing voice, too. However, as far as this song is concerned, Carole's interpretation and arrangement are much better than the Carpenters' over-produced rendition. Carole really brings out the emotion and intensely plaintive regrets conveyed by the lyrics in a way that the listener can really feel deep down inside, whereas the Carpenter's version sounds like a sugary-sweet pop song, out of phase with the true meaning of the lyrics

I had no idea that Carole composed this song. I absolutely love the Carpenters' version. I didn't like Carole's as much. But the more I listened to this, it just really grew on me. I love Carole's soulful and as you say, plaintive quality. It's beautifully heart felt and uncomplicated.

I really like this version, but even Carole King reportedly said that the Carpenter's version made hers sound like a demo. I agree. If this was the only version of this song, it would be a perfectly fine song, and it is, but there is the Carpenter's version and they take it to another level...

@@puldspulds5798 It is in a book that Richard Carpenter recently put out or endorsed. Carpenter also said the song was weak and he shouldn't have chosen it as a single. I think he pretty much ruined it with his over-production and rather flippant interpretation of the song.

It’s Going to Take Some Time
    Carole King
    Produced by Lou Adler
    Album Music
It's going to take some time this time
    To get myself in shape
I really fell out of line this time
    I really missed the gate
The birds on the telephone line, (next time)
Are cryin' out to me, (next time)
And I won't be so blind next time
    And I'll find some harmony
But it's going to take some time this time
    And I can't make demands
But, like the young trees in the winter time
    I'll learn how to bend
After all the tears we've spent
    How could we make amends?
So, it's one more round for experience
And I'm on the road again
And it's going to take some time this time

    No matter what I've planned

Hello, King her overdubs one piano over another and then uses and electric celeste and maybe a Wurlitzer electric piano, so you have to pick and choose what you want to include and leave out while playing. Also, the sheet music for the song is trash. Sad-but I love the song and King's playing beyond belief.

50+ years ago I played on a hundred grand and the difference was amazing. Later I found a $100k grand in the French Q I wanted. (if only). It didn't have 'great' sound, even good for that matter, but it was made out of matchsticks and was none the less 'Striking', excuse the pun. I wanted it!
25+ years ago, I had access to a keyboard with amazing ability to add in. It didn't even have a simple recording memory chip or stick but it was fun. I loved adding in everything, strings. It was a home player @ $10k. Studios must be fantastic now yet somehow don't sound better. Must be my ears. lol
(I used to buy the latest sheet music when I was a kid, but it was always awful. I've had a few arrangements that were decent but most of the commercial sheets are less than truth.)
Van Cliburn was my hero in the 60's; guild repertoire. For a period of time senior year, after school we met at a music store and practiced a duet on 17 baby grands. It was an awesome sound. A lot of staccato. But that's what 34 kids are all about!

A lot of good friends played the piano. When they dropped by we'd pound in the piano. I wish I'd had the last piano teacher the entire time. I learned more from her than all the other years combined. Later I figured out more by myself.

A guy at work gave me two poems he had written and wanted to see what could be done with them. I gave one to a childhood friend who had gotten a degree in music and we each came up with something. He liked my friends. I am really shy so I wasn't going to give it to him to embarrass me later. So I sent it to my work answering machine and called him down to listen to it. He frowned and said, " was thinking of more of a country tune. This sounds more like something Celine Dion would sing to". As disappointed as I was could I really be? 😇.
He and a different friend and I would meet at Antoine's down on 7th Street? in Austin. The first hour budding artists brought their recordings to be judged by everyone. Then it switched into the real songwriters behind the popular music. They had some good music. It was funny, entertaining. They were hilarious.
