It's naive to believe that CCP will honor any agreements or treaties. Ccp also witness the treaty of Ukraine in 1992...just name one of them. Authoritarians are all like that😅
The sentiment expressed here is that Hong Kong's status and role have shifted in China's eyes over the years. Initially, when China was more isolated from the global economy and before its accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Hong Kong was seen as a model and a bridge to the rest of the world due to its developed financial systems and adherence to Western legal and economic standards. Hong Kong was respected and its expertise and systems were seen as valuable. However, as China's economy has expanded massively and it has become a global superpower, second only to the United States, there has been a shift in attitude. The Chinese government has grown more confident in its own governance model and more critical of Western concepts, particularly when it comes to political systems and freedoms. This is evident in the way China views political expression and protests. While Western societies, and Hong Kong historically, value political freedom and the right to protest, China points to violent protests in places like France as evidence that unrestricted freedoms can lead to social unrest. Thus, China promotes its model as one that prioritizes social stability and economic growth over political freedom, which has led to increased control over Hong Kong and a re-evaluation of its role and freedoms.
