It's April 16, 1945, the Battle of Okinawa. The destroyer USS Laffey is conducting radar patrol so she's the closest ship to the expected enemy attacks. Its mission is to alert the US forces to the arrival of Japanese aircraft. But what the crew doesn't know is that on this day they will have to endure the toughest challenge of their lives - during 90 minutes 22 Japanese planes will attack the USS Laffey trying to bomb, strafe and directly collide with her. The chances of survival are slim to none. How could the crew and the ship survive one of the fiercest battles of the war?

How about video that follows USS Enterprise CV-6
I’m just saying the ship that the Japanese really couldn’t sink was the USS Enterprise CV-6, claimed to be sunken by the Japanese 3 times, she never was and she earned her most famous the nick name The Grey Ghost, She is the most revered and decorated ship of WW2 in the US navy earning 20 battle stars, she became the first ship to earn the Presidential Unit Citation and the first ship and only ship in the US Navy to earn the British Admiralty Pennant, and at one point was the only operational Aircraft Carrier in the Pacific Enterprise Vs. Japan she is a true legend among the US Navy
Can you do a video about the ship
and the USS Lexington (CV-16)
I thought the same too.
Hello
Yes please the big E
This ship took several hits from kamikaze planes, got radioactive contamination during the atomic bomb tests in the Bikini atoll, and served actively in the Korean and Vietnam wars without being sunk. This ship was truly blessed.
USS Laffy was the epitome of “I didn’t hear no bell”
It’s currently a museum ship in Charleston, SC as well
@@overlordemu7765 she even tried to sink herself once. A bad leak developed while she was tied up in Charleston, but fortunately the museum was able to find enough money to have her dry docked. The leak was repaired and she went right back to museum duty.
I think the she just wanted to make up for the bad luck the the other USS Laffey (DD-459) had, being sandwiched between two Japanese battleships and sunk. She still did give a good account in that battle, but was ultimately sunk.
I've always felt that the spirit of the Benson Laffey has protected the Sumner Laffey. Nothing else explains why DD-724 was able to take so many hits and remain stubbornly afloat.
6:10 So we not gonna talk about him backflipping off that rail?
bud said aight im out
I love that part
lol ikr
Im looking for this comment 🤣
That was awesome. I love that part. I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who knows that
6:10 Gotta love that backflip.
Laffey is a prime example of why *EVERY* US sailor is taught basic damage control and are encouraged to learn more. 🇺🇲
Nice to know
Well that and the USS Forrestal fire.
um? After your strong statement you say um. Hilarious!
@@minirock000 blud not seeing the emoji that makes it into a US flag 💀
we cant see that emoji on pc i thought the same shit he did lol@@Temporal94
The first "USS Laffey" was the one sunk at Guadalcanal.
She charged the battleship Hiei as a Benson-class destroyer and fell victim to a withering barrage of gunfire.
The Allen M Sumner "USS Laffey" is the one here, and I had the pleasure of visiting her one time with USS Yorktown.
3:09
Also nice reference to Battleship (2012).
Ironically, Captain Becton, the commander of the USS Laffey in this video, was commnder of the destroyer right behind the original Laffey as she went head to head with Hiei.
And I'm P*ssed that they scrapped the Clamagore
And this is in 1 of his vids too
@@jackthedragon612 Not related to Laffey, but another interesting tidbit is that USS Johnston’s gunnery officer at Samar, Lt. Robert C. Hagen, had also been aboard USS Aaron Ward (the ship you’re describing) at Guadalcanal.
Laffey lived up to her previous namesake. And yeah Patriot's point is a good experience, I miss USCGC Ingham there but she's in good hands and I know it's better to have her elsewhere than suffer the fate of USS Clamagore. The worst part of so many ships under one group, can't afford to keep all of them in decent order
I love to see the Battleships reference at 3:10 arguably my favorite part of the video
Also are we just gonna ignore that at 6:10 the second sailor does a backflip over the railing? 🤣
Backflip! Was looking for someone that commented it lol.
I can’t stop laughing at the backflip 😂 that caught me so off guard
@@g_superson1c255 Fr lol, watched this at like three a.m and my mother heard me cackling like a goblin while she was getting ready for work lmfao
I thought I was the only one who knew that reference on 3:10
i wanted to point that out lmao
This is my grandfathers ship. He is still alive today. Always love watching the story of his ship.
Nah the guy that did a backflip off of the 20mm aa guns at 6:10 is badass
I saw that and was hoping I wasn't the only one
Just saw it
He like : a hell nah i'm out of here
i laughed my ass off when that happened

I’ve definitely heard of the USS Laffey but I love this story
Me too. From the Kamikaze episode of Dogfights
same@@andrewmontgomery5621
@@andrewmontgomery5621---That's where I first learned of this ship. They don't do shows like that anymore.
I visited it at Patriots’s Point in South Carolina, it’s dry docked with the USS Yorktown
@@thechadredsanitzer3462that’s really cool
The reason why they couldn't sink the Laffey is because the Laffey was a one and only experimental warship build by a material classified as "plot armor"
Laffy wasn't the only one. Pretty sure Enterprise and New Jersey were covered in it too.
Also, we adopted the technology from the Brits, who deployed it first on HMS Warspite in WWI. It lasted her through both wars!
The Battleship reference at 3:08 is amazing! Keep up the great work!
I would love it if Yarnhub did a video on the Monchy 9 of Newfoundland. 9 men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment positioned at Monchy-le-Preux during the Battle of Arras in 1917 hid behind shrubbery and defended the town from a German force anywhere from 200 - 300 men strong for 11 hours to prevent a German break through. I think it is a very cool and very underrated battle that sounds like the plot of a movie.
I'd also love to see a video on that
@@yourboishitposts Thanks.
My Great Great Grandfather was a Lieutenant for the 1st NFLD Regiment!
I'm unsure if he was part of the 9 but he was one of the Survivors from the 1070 who went over the top on July 1st.
a shrubbery you say? a shrubbery . 😂😂
@@hellhoundactual8201 Nice! Great story are you a Newfoundlander as well?
we got the laffey, now we need the USS Enterprise!
agreed!!! We need a video on the grey Ghost
Don’t forget about the Marblehead!!!
@@goldenfuntimefoxy5700And the USS Charles England.
Everybody from the Japanese to the Klingons thought they had her number, and none ever did.
This ship is the Nokia of all ships, it can survive anything.
6:10 that backflip tho 🤯
Also USS Laffey. Get’s choose for the atomic bomb test in Bikini Atoll as well.
Laffey: I REFUSE TO SINK!
Breaking News: Ship too angry to die
Imagine kamikaze hit you multiple time and still can say "Hell no, we still have guns that can shoot"... Really salute for the brave Commander
First of all i have to say that i like the reference to the Battleship movie from 2012, its amazing how those americans aboard USS Laffey fought the jamanese kamikaze pilots, they where determine to not let the japanese sink Laffey, respect for those who fought to protect Laffey and to those who have fallen protecting Laffey.
Amazing story Yarnhub, great job.
When asked of his intent to abandon ship in light of all the damage, Captain Becton is recorded as saying, "No! I'll never abandon ship as long as a single gun will fire."
My great grandfather was on the ship during Korea . From 1952 to 1955 he love that ship so much. I really do miss him. He was the best great grandfather I’ve ever had. He he was a great guy. Hope I can go see the ship again in Charleston South Carolina at patriots point. Never forget the Laffey!
I visited the Laffey and Yorktown at Patriots Point last summer and it was a hell of an experience. The fore turret was open to guests and has a video that explains what it was like on April 15th; loud explosions, the screams of sailors, it had everything. Eventually there was an almost deafening explosion noise and the turret lights went out when the kamikaze hits the aft of the ship. It was an honor to be able to srand where those brave sailors stood, fighting as hard as they could against the kamikazes. Amazing video as always Yanhub, and thank you for telling the story of these heroes.
Patriots point has grown a lot since I last visited it. I did that and Fort Sumter. Lots of history in one area! Also as I have stated they have amazing places to eat in Charleston as well. Tommy Condons is when I ate at
Patriot’s Point is awesome. You could spend a whole day just in the Yorktown, the dang ship is a maze.
Been many times - always enjoyed it!
Deus salve a América
One of the things I love about Yarnhub is from time to time, we are graced by the presence of the legendary yet mythical acrobat troops
Tears, as the sailor putting the flag back up. Brave men and a ship that would not give up.
When I saw the title of this episode I immediately thought "Laffey". This is a great retelling of this heroic crew and their ship. It's one movie that would not require any Hollywood embellishment.
Glad to find that some didn't get unmet expectations (I thought that this might be about the US Navy's best - and luckiest - girl (USS Enterprise (CV-6)).
I actually had the chance to visit the USS Laffy years ago! Was really amazing. The most memorable part was when an older gentleman was walking on the dock next to her. Reached out his hand and touched the hull and started to cry!
He probably sailed on her.
Most likely and remembered that day very well!
This is one heck of show of courage, skill, and most of all, endurance and fortitude! So touching!
Don't forget some good old-fashioned dumb luck. And as one survivor said, "some help from above."
“I will not abandon ship as long as a single gun can fire.”
This is what Captain Becton was reportedly saying when asked about abandoning ship.
Insane backflip at 6:11

I just visited the USS Laffey a few weeks ago, awesome ship and I loved seeing how well it’s been restored and repaired. The radar room is awesome.
I remember visiting the USS Laffey a couple of months ago and it was a sight to behold. I learned about the story of how that ship survived 22 kamikaze attacks while I was walking around on its deck. I also got a hollowed out pineapple grenade as a souvenir while I was over there on vacation. The ship itself was incredible to see and seeing the tale of USS Laffey like this brought back good memories! Astonishing work bringing this story to life and I can’t wait to see what event will be covered next!
I love the subtle touch of the AA Gunner doing a backflip over the railing at 6:10 lol
Bender- “DO A FLIP”
USS Laffey: I didn't hear no bell!
6:11I love how he back flips of the gun enplacement.
I visited the Laffey for my birthday last year. It's a very sobering experience to know where the damage was, the bomb hits and kamikaze strikes, and be able to walk the deck that used to be ablaze.
Laffey was a few ships that the Japanese can’t sink. One such example was the USS enterprise, the others were the Iowa class horde of 4 ships, including Missouri, but most notably USS intrepid which survived 5 kamikazes and ironically sank the IJN musashi with the assistance from her other Essex class sister ships.
In this case, Laffey, enterprise, intrepid, and Missouri deserve to be called, ships of honor
Good grief, I am just at a loss for words. YarnHub, your video making skills is getting better and better. The Laffey and its crew fought valiantly on that day despite so many odds, all of the kamikazes failing to sink her, and I find it horrible that the radical Japanese government and military would throw away so many young lives for a hopeless war, but yet, they were crazy enough to go through with it. I very much highly respect the commander and men on the Laffey and the Grim Reapers!
Completely agree, that these kamikaze pilots 'felt no pain' gives me no comfort, they surely dished out immense pain & suffering on the poor sods they invaded (one example: Rape of Nanking). As someone with severe chronic pain, I wish I could give it to people who start wars just for their egos, like Putin or the Japanese & German govt/military in 1930s/WWII. Insanely unfair how some people have to suffer for no reason while others who make people suffer endure no consequence for their actions.
I’ve lived in South Carolina my entire life. Visiting Patriots Point was always a highlight of any trip to Charleston and a big part of that was reliving the story of the Laffey.
Interestingly, I didn’t know about the part with the flag until now. It’s very reminiscent of another story, which ironically happens to take place near Charleston not too far from where the Laffey is now.
The destroyer I that I served on back in 1956 was damned near also sunk by a Kamakazi on 6 April 1945 off Okinawa. It was the USS Mullany, DD-528. "The Mullany crew then succeeded in lighting off one boiler, and Mullany limped off on one shaft for Pearl Harbor and San Francisco, arriving 29 May."
I legit got goosebumps when the F4U Corsairs finally arrived. This was an amazing storytelling!
Holy shoot, you guys. You have absolutely went well above-and-beyond with the animation in this video.
Your team deserves the type of budget major movies do.
especially since they've made a movie!
I’ve been inside the Laffey. The ship looks huge but it’s actually quite compact. The main turrets are quite cramped inside. The gun breeches take up most of the space inside.
Am I the only one that had a tear in its eye at 15:20 when McCarthy mounts the flag up
You’re not the only one.
Best country in the world
I've really gotta say that, since I've been a subscriber, I have never been let down by any video that this channel has produced!! Especially this one, I'm not sure what it was the story or the visuals but this episode was just amazing and, in my opinion, one of the best one's they've ever made. The story was amazing I love the heroic story of the USS Laffey but the visualization of the story is what sent me over the edge. They really made this story come to life again!! Thank you so much for all you do these stories keep my love of history going!!
Every time I see you made a new video I stop whatever I am doing and watch. I was in the US Navy so I have a bias but I really like your Navy videos whether it would be American, Japanese, German, or British. Your animation is flawless, I have been watching you for a long time and your skill just improves. Great job. Cheers to 1 million subscribers soon, you deserve it.
Thank you !
@@YarnhubYarnhub, I was wondering if you could do a video on Sea Fury’s vs MiGs?
In the Korean war, British hawker sea fury’s shot down 2 MiG-15s with no losses, I thought it was very impressive, given that the sea fury was a propeller driven plane and the MiG-15 was a 2nd generation jet fighter
I know you may have other things planned, I’m but I would be really grateful if you could reply?
Thanks! You guys do an amazing job
As a former QM1, i had the honor of touring USS Laffey at Patriots Point while i was in Military Sealift Command, aboard the Hospital ship USNS Comfort. This illustration of the famous battle is the finest ive ever seen by far. Incredible! The courage of the crew was remarkable as they faced all those Kamikaze planes. Salute to Yarnhub and World of Warships for this awesome video!
My father served on the USS Laffy during the kamikaze attack. He was a Machinist Mate in the Engine Room. His best friend was an ammo handler in the 53 mount (the rear mount). They, of course, both survived the war. I have heard the story through the veteran sailors who lived it and visited Patriots Point and the Laffy many times.
6:11 i like how the dude just cannonballed out of the gunners position😂
This is my favorite history channel, mainly because it provides its viewers with commentary and quality animations.
Really hope this channel reaches a million subscribers.
Those effects for the flak and explosions are fantastic, amazing like a film studio, damn that is incredible for a video, the way the shells are animated in 5:55 like a transition is amazing!
Damn the graphics and animations are becoming more and more amazing each upload! But yeah, just as the other commenters here say, can we also get one for the Enterprise? She saw her sister ships fall and she faced against all odds, yet still brought the war to the enemy. She was also there to help liberate my country, so I was pretty sad to learn that she got scrapped. Also, love the Battleship movie reference there!
An old History Channel TV show called “Dogfights” had an episode about this battle. Loved that show as a kid, it’s cool to see another version of this incredible story.
3:10 caught the reference lmao
Great job as usual. Excellent storytelling. Superb animation. You've come a long way...

I got 3 things to say here.
1st, amazing graphics! You guys just keep stepping up the game here and I love it!
2nd, I love that you brought in a Battleship reference with the “let’s drop some lead on these muther” “fire!” Absolutely loved that🤣
And 3rd, I got to see the Laffey on a vacation when I was young, and the Yorktown too. I knew it saw combat, but I never liked into the Laffeys hisotry, and I’m glad you guys brought this up. Remembering standing on that deck with on old WW2 vet, and now thinking of all that brought tears to my eyes.
Y’all know how to tell history in a fun and memorable way, love y’all
Graphics are amazing as always!!

Yarnhub continue to produce some of the very best quality videos on the internet. I’m never disappointed. They keep getting better and better.
I remember there was a time the vehicles and settings looked sharp, but the humans looked a fair bit like play dough. But those days are clearly over. The human characters look fantastic currently!!!

Hello yarnhub! Your videos are getting greater and greater and I love seeing your progress!
Your channel is probably the best animated documentary channel I have watched in TH-cam lately. Thank you
I visited this ship, and veterans told me all about it. All your information is accurate and very entertaining
Jesus the animation is just phenomenal. 1st video vs this video is like the character arc of a multi season anime
I have never in my life felt such intense pressure from a video, you guys left me mouth-open from this video, i take my hat off to you Yarnhub!
That Battleship reference at 3:14 is pure cultured gold!
I was focused heavily on the story and video. Then outta nowhere the guy manning the AA does a back flip outta there b4 the plane hits. I just start rolling 🤣
At the 5:54/5:55 mark, all of the shells coming straight towards the Kamikaze (unsure if it is a Val, Kate, Zero or something else) would make a great t-shirt. Maybe something with the slogan of ‘Laffey’s Wall of Lead’ or ‘Can’t Sink the Unsinkable Ship’. Either way, hope Yarnhub considers making a t-shirt out of that as that shot is truly epic.
Well done Team Yarnhub!
THERE WE GO!
One important aspect of this fight was overlooked in this video. Going back and remembering the Kamikaze episode of the show “Dogfights” from 2010, it was also mentioned that there were two LST’s (Landing Ship Tanks) that took part in the battle. Some of the kamikazes even overlooked USS Laffey to target the LST’s. These attempts were also unsuccessful.
It was actually two LCS (Landing Craft Support) vessels that were with Laffey, not LSTs. Specifically, LCS(L)-51 and LCS(L)-116. Both ships would be damaged in the attack that crippled Laffey.
Also, I might have missed it, but I think the video forgot to mention Laffey’s air support actually arrived much earlier than depicted, and also at different times instead of altogether. First to arrive was four FM-2 Wildcats from Navy squadron VC-94 (flying off the escort carrier Shamrock Bay). They shot down several aircraft before being forced to return to refuel and rearm. A while later, USMC Corsairs (from VMF-441 on Okinawa) arrived in greater numbers to aid Laffey, as depicted in the video.
Out of everything it had to be a destroyer is what refused to sink its amazing
I have been on the ship multiple times and its story never gets old. There is also the uss Yorktown and a Vietnam war base
I visited this warship back in June along with the Essex Yorktown! and the history was fascinating! You get to walk into the turret that was hit by the Kamikaze, and I felt a chill run up my spine.
Glad to see a video made about her! Great Work as Usual Yarn
the japanese got ghost shelled so hard
I’ve been to that ship with my son who was 12 at the time. I’ll have to send him this video.
It's often the small destroyers that see the most intense engagements and many still survive, great video.
That first zero that got hit by the main gun was actually partially through the battle and one gunner who survived saw it and described the encounter on history channels dogfights
My wife and I visited the USS Laffey and to see history is amazing.
This laffey is of the Allen M. Sumner class, not to confuse it with the Benson class one.
The loadout of US destroyers in this late into the war was top of the line and deadly. They had accurate(for the time) fire control directors that can lock in on the height and speed on enemy planes to effectively shoot them down. The only issue is theres not enough guns when the planes are coming in from different directions. There is only soo much lead those guns can throw at the enemy at a time when they dont have the luxury of our advance targeting system today until an enemy plane penetrates the screen and does damage to the ship.
6:11 bro really hit the backflip 😂
3:11 Battleship Film reference ❤
Being from South Carolina I have visited the Laffey many times, she was built by Bath Iron Works in Maine, They have and still do design and build some of the toughest ships the USN has ever seen. The phrase "Bath built is best built" is known by most in the Navy. When I visit friends that work the yard, their fellow shipbuilders often ask if I know the Laffey when they hear I'm from South Carolina,
The reference from the movie “battleship” is so on point, great work Yarnhub team!

They should share these stories more often in the Navy. Watching this made me really proud to be serving after these brave men
I visited the Laffey at Patriots Point, SC two years ago. The ship was as impressive as its history.
I remember learning about this ship in an episode of Dogfights
YarnHub,Have you ever heard of the USS New Orleans' fight for survival?
Over 80 years ago, a US warship was badly damaged by a Japanese torpedo during the Battle of Tassafaronga.
The crew temporarily repaired the USS New Orleans with coconut logs.
To return to port, the ship then sailed backwards in order to avoid being sunk by submarines.
The US Navy's triple A was fearsome. The ships were covered with 40mm, 20mm and .5 cal weapons. No other nation armed their ships like the US. Thanks for the animation!
To quote the History Channel series Dog Fights "David has felled Goliath"
Yes! So glad that the ship I have been on has a video on her from you!
My Lord, with every video the animation gets better and better.
