Climbing the Chasm of Doom: Joshua Tree's Greatest Secret Hike

  • The Chasm of Doom is Joshua Tree's greatest secret and most awe-inspiring hike. While difficult to find, the effort to do so is more than rewarded with entry to the chasm's dark and often terrifying tunnels. The only way out? Climbing through the infamous "coffin", where hikers are forced to lie flat on their backs to squeeze through a tiny opening in the rock while shimmying to the other side. If you are afraid of small spaces, this secret Joshua Tree hike may not be the one for you!

    That coffin squeeze was insane. There's no way I could have done that. I felt a little panicky just watching you two. Great adventure! Great video! You two are a bit crazy......in a good way. Lol

      Haha thanks Gary! What's funny is that neither of us knew we had claustrophobia at all until getting into that coffin, but both of us felt our heart rates skyrocket while we were in there. We didn't panic mentally, but our bodies were totally panicking -- it was a truly weird and cool experience! ❤️

    The worst part would be not having confidence that you are on the right path. Getting through a small space is OK when you know it opens up, but thinking you have to backtrack to get out would be really hard. Nice job, I agree with the other comments, you two maintain such a great attitude, facing difficulty with smiles all around.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you are exactly right about that. There were a few places where we actually did go the wrong way and had to climb back up or down, which was mentally very challenging. But it was so freaking fun that it made the challenges feel small in comparison -- it reminded us of being kids exploring some kind of crazy haunted house or something. Really a memorable adventure. ❤️

    You two take adventures to a whole new level. Caves are sacred in the Goddess tradition. The symbolism of you descending into the womb of Mother Earth and crawling through crevices, like snakes, was rich in Great Mother symbolism. Is there any archaeological evidence of this place being used for sacred ceremonies in ancient times? Just love your videos!

    Crazy hike! I am claustrophobic. If it wasn't for the fact that I knew there would be a positive ending to your video, I would have turned it off at a few points (especially at the coffin!). It was making me queasy! I hope no one watches this video and decides to do this hike alone. It appears that one could easily get stuck! Elise you seemed to slide through the tight spots fairly easily, but I thought Adam was pushing it a little. Another great video!

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Virginia -- we were thinking exactly the same thing! In several places on the hike, we both said we wouldn't want to do it alone -- at least the first time -- because there's just too much uncertainty about getting stuck (especially for poor Adam, who took about 5 minutes to get through one particularly tight squeeze on the way down!). Very glad you enjoyed the video. We would definitely like to mix in a few more adventures like this in the future because it was really, really fun. ❤️

    the coffin ain't claustrophobic... but i understand. our first time was when my daughter was 7 yrs old, no flash light etc. daughter did get stuck and became afraid but told her her keep to the left, she was going towards the right and wedged herself. you can bypass the coffin by climbing up and over. still i am happy you both experienced it. we've done it backward too. she won't go thru the coffin so we climb over it, she's 14. we've also been to the iron door, which she was the one who found it at 7 yrs old.

      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

But, I could hardly watch you squeeze through the coffin! Dang, I can hardly do an MRI without a sedative & that’s in the safety of a Medical Clinic! I would have totally lost it in the tight quarters of the coffin! Intellectually, I know those boulders have been in place for millions of years, so why do I think that they will collapse the moment you guys are squeezing through??I love all your videos & really admire your relationship Kudos to you both & thanks for bringing us along on the journey! I guess next time I go to Joshua Tree I’m going to have to slow down and actually do some exploring! Not in the coffin though!

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha that's pretty much exactly how we felt, Steve! Adam was saying exactly that about how the boulders haven't moved in hundreds of thousands of years, yet both of us still had a visceral fear response especially when going through the coffin. It was really interesting, and made us want to do some more of these kinds of things in order to tame that fear the way we've tamed our fear of heights! And totally agree about J-tree. The more we explore, especially the off-trail stuff, the more we love it!

    That chasm is scary and claustrophobic for sure, but with the welcoming arms of the Joshua trees everywhere, how can you not go? I did a bit of scrambling here once, and the boulders can be slippery.

    You two are so brave and resourceful. Amazing hike, great video work. Seriously.
    No way, I could of done that, as I have real claustrophobia. (trapped in an underground fort collapse as a kid for a few minutes -- talk about panic response. I still have relapses sometimes.)
    Like Adam said, I would much prefer standing a top of 5000 ft cliff, than going through a slot too small to fit. And I'm leary of heights too. But usually my Tripod work, takes my mind off of it.
    Cheers! Have a great holiday, and an adventure-filled New Year.

    Chasm of Doom is located in Joshua Tree National Park, CA. It is a twisting, hidden, maze consisting of tunnels, passageways and extremely small spaces buried in the giant boulders of Hidden Valley. It is not for the faint of heart or the claustrophobic.
    Adam & Elise have set out to locate the infamous, Chasm of Doom and shimmy, twist & wiggle their way thru some very small & tight spaces.
    So far they have managed to squeeze thru some very narrow slots & spaces. However, ahead lies the coffin. A dark, frighteningly tiny space, that resembles a scene straight out of, “Indian Jones”.
    Adam must have lost to Elise at,
    Rock-Paper-Scissors, he’s not too excited about going first. But in he goes, using his washboard abs, biceps chiseled out of stone & legs a professional athlete would envy to squeeze thru this extremely narrow gap. You can hear him grunting, his body scraping along the upper & lower stone slabs as he slowly & painfully squeezes thru. I’ve watched the film several times and I still can’t figure out how he was able to get thru.
    Elise goes last. She has curves in all the right places but, on this occasion, I just don’t think it’s going to help. You can hear how tense & nervous she is as she wiggles along, her heart racing and hoping she doesn’t get stuck. She slowly makes progress using her hands, elbows, shoulders, back and legs to move thru this seriously claustrophobic space.
    Good humor and “LiveHardxLoveHard”have always gone hand in hand, despite their channel being the epitome of adventure so, it’s not surprising that once they safely make it thru to daylight Elise is laughing, while jokingly telling Adam she hoped he’d get stuck.
    Adam might want to check out his life insurance policy.
    There’s always something captivating, exciting and at times terrifying about watching Adam & Elise conquer new heights and this film captures the essence of that spirit extremely well.
    I hope you guys had a wonderful Christmas.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahaha we loved reading this one Frans, and you definitely know our sense of humor well. Though we've never put it in the channel, we do have an ongoing joke about how easy it would be for Elise to cash Adam's life insurance policy since he always has to go first! This is an awesome and eloquent description, as always.
      We had a wonderful Christmas, spent laughing with loved ones and also remembering all the loved ones who have passed on. Hope that you did much the same, and had a great day. ❤️

But with two of us, we figured the other one could probably pull the stuck on out or, if that failed, could at least go and get help! ❤️

    Geez, from agoraphobia on Maroon Peak to claustrophobia in Joshua Tree, you guys push it outside my comfort zone on both ends!

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha ya this and Maroon are a pretty good resume sample of what we like to get up to! But in all honesty, we prefer the heights to the claustrophobia any day. But still, this was really fun. ❤️

    This reminds me of a place that I used to climb when I lived in Wyoming. It's a place called Vedawoo ( veedavoo). It's beautiful and has the craziest natural structure of boulders and rock formations. Highly recommend! You could summit Sugarloaf mountain to add more value to a long drive to Wyoming

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow Jeremy we just looked it up -- it looks like an amazing place, and well worth a visit! We could put together a really cool and beautiful ridge and rock scrambling route out there, plus, like you say, a whole other adventure on Sugarloaf mountain. Great suggestion -- we will put it on the list! ❤️

    Better you than me on this one! A few years ago, I went into the Colorado Cave. It was kinda like going through the coffin until you got to a big room. I didn't stay long. Instead, I went back out and rock climbed. The airy views and exposure was much more to my liking. Merry Christmas to you both!

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We love airy views and exposure too, but this was fun to switch it up and give ourselves a different kind of mental challenge. Colorado Cave sounds cool but not sure I could endure anything much longer than the coffin. What if one really does have an anxiety attack in there?! Happy happy holidays Steve! ♥️

    You gonna go first? You want me to go first?...wow, this is messed up...this is nuts... ;) Even crazier is that you reversed course after already conquering it and went back down that hole (same hole you came out of?). Did you end up in a totally different cave/route for your exit segment (appeared that there was no coffin to re-navigate)? Loved this just as much as the hikes to the mountaintops...! Have a great holidays!

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha yes Christine, it was a totally different route down -- and actually through a different hole than the one we came up. We started out going down the wrong hole -- there are several -- and had to come back up to find the right one. So there was no coffin on the way down, but still some pretty crazy tight spaces! Very glad you liked this one -- now, back to the mountains for us. Happy holidays! ❤️

    Another awesome video you two! Loved it. Hey, this looks like "The Crawl" in Joshua Tree N.P. that I did with friends a couple of years ago. I wonder if it's the same route under the boulders, but just a different name. "The Crawl" was located in the vicinity of the Indian Cove campground.

      Just looked up "The Crawl," Kirk -- it looks super fun! Not the same as the Chasm, but it's a great recommendation and we will definitely try it when we get back to J-Tree. Meanwhile, very glad you enjoyed this one! ❤️

      Aw thank you so much, your comments always motivate and uplift us ♥️ We definitely feel like we've gotten more comfortable over the past year showing you guys more of who we are, weird quirks and all. It's hard to do that when you're just starting out because the internet can be such a harsh place, but we're so fortunate to have found so many friends here this year! Glad you find some of that enjoyable. Wishing you a wonderful holiday! Looking forward to sharing what's ahead with you in 2022!
