She has left so much behind for us to treasure; I loved Preston too. I think she had more years in the industry then most and gave her all. We will never meet another Aretha in this life time or the next. RIP Queen of my soul
aretha franklin has the most effortlessly strong voice without it sounding like shes shouting and screaching like some other singers. so much power, its great!
My God that took us to church on this. I love it. Should old acquaintances be forgotten, And never brought to mind? Should old acquaintances be forgotten, And days of long ago ! Chorus: For old long ago, my dear (For auld lang syne, my dear,) For old long ago, (For auld lang syne,) We will take a cup of kindness yet (We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet) For old long ago. (For auld lang syne!)
I watch this video every New Year's Eve smh it just won't be the same this year coming to kick it off watching these two dearly departed Greats!! R.I.P. Billy & R.I.P. Aretha The one & only Queen of Soul!!!😢
Let the tears stop Lawd!!!!. Rest in Peace Queen ReRe I learnt everything about singing from you. Every thing , every run every riff you inspired millions like me...May you hear the Lord say well done thy good and faithful severant!!!!. May You Rest in Peace Auntie ReRe and May you Rest In Peace Billy 2.(Hard to believe they both gone)
Billy kills it all the time and Aretha's studio stuff back then was hit and miss even tho I have managed to hear a cut on all of her Arista recordings that let me know she still is the queen.
But I TOTALLY agree with your opinion. Even when Re lost her voice in the mid 80s thru the early 90s (when she finally gave up her multi-pack Kools habit) her concerts were ruined from over-production. She was a smart enuff singer that she could've still given decent concerts with a reduced range if she just had a quartet and bluesd out the arrangements but instead she hid behind these big band arrangements which only emphasized the problem.
Billy KILLS on Aretha's The Other Side Of The Sky, esp on Just Right Tonight. Also check out his work on Ta Ta Vega's Now I See. His A&M lps are way underated. This sounds SOOO much better than Arethas' studio stuff at that time. They are so sweet and funky together.
@binichRainerZufall Seriously? You can't hear the joy, the soul and the casual mastery displayed by both Aretha and Billy? You can't compare this to a fully produce song from an album. This isn't even concert footage. This is just two people knocking around a classic standard in an off-hand way. It's spontaneous, heartfelt and fun. I challenge you to find a better, more entertaining rendition of Auld Lang Syne. These two show up Guy Lombardo, easily.
I agree with the last couple posts. Luther had a great voice.. but alot of his producing was often "over" produced. Almost to the point where it took away from the vocalist and music. Aretha's Arista days were so wonderful because it was so simple and the vocalist allowed to shine.
Happy New Year from Providence, Rhode Island!! I cant wait to see some fireworks and kiss my girlfriend at midnight. God bless The United States, God save the queen, God save the world, and bring our soldiers home!
TH-cam has plenty other video's of this song including a version I posted which is pretty much traditional excluding a brief snippet of my vocal warm up beforehand. If you don't like other versions, why don't you share your own? Life is too short to be depressed. Have a good year!
How on earth can they pronounce auld lang syne as "old laing zine"??? It's of course as you read it, straight away: awld laang sine! Easy as that! I had never heard this sort of American way to the pronunciation of one of my favourite tunes...
Thanks for making this song less depressing.
I watch this EVERY YEAR
Me too... HNY :-)

I had the pleasure to record and tour Australia with Billy Preston.....he was a great brother and gift to the world.
That’s awesome. I would have loved to get to know him
Anyone who got to see Billy in a live show is a lucky person, I saw him twice, two of the greatest shows I've ever seen.
You can't be trained to play the piano like that, and no one ever could be trained to sing like aretha. Her musicianship is masterful.
They were both blessed with 100%, unadulterated, talent.
The only way to ring in the New Year! A Happy and Healthy 2023 for all!
it is currently 6 minutes into the year 2022. If you're reading this, I hope this is your best year yet! ♥
This is how to bring in a new year right!
My God that took us to church on this. I love it.

Beautiful rendition. Billy Preston doing what he did best and Aretha belting out those notes,

She's the Queen of Rock & Roll; he's the most talented pianist. Enough said!
Billy kills it all the time and Aretha's studio stuff back then was hit and miss even tho I have managed to hear a cut on all of her Arista recordings that let me know she still is the queen.
Just love both of these phenomenal guys like crazy!!!!
Loved it, thank you. I've never heard it done better.
Thanks for the translation of Auld LANG SYNE.
The style that this rendition is in, is traditional gospel. Preston took that way of playing directly from the church.
Happy New Year - and what a lovely late Christmas present this is!
What a beautiful woman
I watched last year
And I watch now
Will tuck this aside for New Year's!
I love this!!!!!! I wonder what year this was recorded. ❤
Very beautiful rendition by two of the very great! Thanks! Ps Happy New Year!
They surely brought out the church sound in this song 🎵
Happy New Year Everyone.....
....I'm heading over to my sister's house for midnite dinner & fireworks with the nieces and nephews.
Billy came up with that BEAT I'll bet money. Everybody's favorite keyboard artist.
the gems mined from youtube never cease to amaze me. keep them coming!

yea baby! I be feelin Retha and bruddah Billy
YES
Love it and thank you for posting! Happy New Years to you!
yeah....stop this stupid war and bring every single soldier home !!!
Her talent is greater than her size.
justo el mismo año en que que llegue a este mundillo jeje
they should of made music babies
Now you just said a mouth full with that one. LOL!
Yes he did. Billy played the organ for the entire 2 disc set. James Cleveland and Aretha switched turns at the piano.
And on her live rec.from Filmore West!
Just saw a new interview where Ree said she wants to duet with Mr Wonder.
Billy KILLS on Aretha's The Other Side Of The Sky, esp

HaPpY NeW YeAr!
I was looking forward to the "richt guid willy wought" line

Yes... (feeling slightly stupid :) Thanks for mentioning that... lol (Atlantic, not Arista)
This is fabulous, but why is nobody addressing that square dude at the end? Lol.
It would've been nice if billy was on the organ and Aretha on the piano.
Yo!!!!!
I agree with the last couple posts. Luther had a great voice.. but alot of his producing was often "over" produced. Almost to the point where it took away from the vocalist and music. Aretha's Arista days were so wonderful because it was so simple and the vocalist allowed to shine.
agreed
1:08 She almost made the T.V explode. :)
Billy Preston 4 ever 5 *
@tirayi -Yes he did.

if the tables were turned, this is tons better than if say, Del Amitri were ever to cover Lift Ev'ry Voice :D
(anyone get that?) :p
has anyone its sheet music??
agreed, the 2nd Luther Album was pretty slim pickins though for me. Aretha should produce all of her own cds or do a duet with Stevie Wonder.
@Barley1231 hahahaha XD
did anyone notice aretha's laugh at 2:40... LOL
We now have an App for all verses and music of Auld Lang Syne itunes.apple.com/gb/app/auld-lang-syne-learn-to-pronounce/id949271511?mt=8
Aretha can really jazz some shit up can't she? Imagine if her and ray did that?
Awesome but the lack of embeding is a big fail. Happy new year anyhow...
They worked on Aretha's Amazing grace together. Billy played the organ.
And at her 'Live at Filmore West album..
Luther produced Aretha on Arista, did you mean on Atlanic? The worst 2 lps she ever made LV produced.
Word. How stupid can people be?
How on earth can they pronounce auld lang syne as "old laing zine"???
It's of course as you read it, straight away: awld laang sine! Easy as that!
