I’m sorry but Finishing the Hat from Sunday In The Park With George over Soliloquy from Carousel, Till I Hear You Sing from Love Never Dies, Make Them Hear You from Ragtime, This Is The Moment from Jekyll & Hyde, If I Can’t Love Her from Disney’s Beauty & The Beast, Out There from The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, Pure Imagination from Wonka, Build A Wall from Shrek The Musical, Every Single Day from Harmony, Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar, Close Every Door from Joesph & The Amazing Technicolor DreamCoat, Pity The Child from Chess The Musical, Stranger from Big Fish, Goodbye from Catch Me If You Can, & Ol’ Man River from Showboat?! I can’t agree with number 1. Finishing the Hat should be defeated to these other selections, especially Soliloquy.
@@markklockenkemper6940some of those are absolutely incredible songs. Most of them don’t beat finishing the hat. I’m not saying I’d put the song in the overall top spot, but it’s a song that can be analyzed and dissected. Every note and word matters more than just carrying along a narrative. I can’t say the same for some on that list. Even though a lot of the songs on the list sound really nice.
@@markklockenkemper6940 Ol' Man River never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Another one is Empty Chairs at Empty Tables. I was in Jesus Christ Superstar and Gethsemane brought the house down. Another song that I love is This is the Moment from Jeckyll and Hyde.
Jeremy Jordan's rendition of Santa Fe never fails to give me the chills, and is the perfect Act One closer. While Christian Bale is a talented actor, I always wondered why they didn't alter the song to suit his vocals more in the original film.
@darrenknowles842 I mean, he is playing a character who was out of breath right before the song, also, did Seize The Day before this song. With all the dancing.
The rumor is that they cast Bale before they even decided what kind of movie they were going to make. If Bale knew it was gonna be a musical, he would never had agreed to be cast.
I cried during Empty Chairs at Empty Tables in the movie, as well as at a high school production of Les Mis. The actor who plays Marius really needs to have that energy, same as with Santa Fe in Newsies.
If they ever do another Steven Universe movie, but in theaters, they need to have Jeremy Jordan voice a Gem that the other Crystal Gems never knew about.
Hearing “Ready As I’ll Ever Be” and being so wow-ed by his performance is what got me into the show. Varian is best boi and I believe his singing/voice acting was a huge factor.
If I Can’t Love Her from Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorites. The amount of vocal range required for it as well as the lyrics are both amazing.
Replaced by “Evermore” on the big screen… but I bet anyone lucky enough to have seen “If I Can’t…” on Broadway missed it a little, as I did. 16:06 They must either have decided “Evermore” suited Steven’s voice better or that the older one was simply more effective on stage than it would be on screen. I do like “Evermore,” but may have liked this just as well.
While it might not be considered to technically be a ballad, one of my all time favourite songs by a man in a musical is “On the Street Where You Live” from My Fair Lady.
@@nunnyabznz completely agree. I know sometimes in these videos they use movie and tv versions because there aren’t good quality theater videos, but Being Alive has at least 3 good quality broadway versions on video (Dean Jones in the cast recording visit, plus Neil Patrick Harris and Raul)
This is an excellent list. No arguments against any of the choices. Yet, it's an impossible task when you realize, there's also: I Do Not Know a Day I Did Not Love You, Two by Two The Soliloquy from Carousel Some Enchanted Evening from South Pacific It Only Takes A Moment from Dolly More I cannot Wish You, Guys and Dolls Goodbye Old Girl, Damn Yankees The September Song, Knickerbocker Holiday Try to Remember, Fantastiks I'm Glad I'm Not Young Anymore, Gigi Married, Cabaret etc.
Soliloquy from Carousel, Make Them Hear You from Ragtime, This Is The Moment from Jekyll & Hyde, If I Can’t Love Her from Disney’s Beauty & The Beast, Out There from The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, Pure Imagination from Wonka, Build A Wall from Shrek The Musical, Every Single Day from Harmony, Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar, Close Every Door from Joesph & The Amazing Technicolor DreamCoat, Stranger from Big Fish, Goodbye from Catch Me If You Can, & Ol’ Man River from Showboat would’ve been good picks as well.
They Call the Wind Maria from Paint Your Wagon. I only saw the movie but Presnel did a masterful job. The gruff voice of Lee Marvin doing I was Born Under a Wandering Star is a song for the ages.
One Song Glory is one of my favorite songs. It just gives me goosebumps. Especially when Roger practically screams the words "Time Dies!" The entire song conveys the emotions of grief and loss of a loved one. Not to mention losing that person to suicide.
"If I Can't Lover Her" from Beauty and the Beast and "Endless Night" from The Lion King are some of my faves. The original Jason Raize version is beautiful.
I have seen just about every one of these men live. (Which is pretty amazing.) Brian Stokes Mitchell and Mandy Patinkin are probably the most iconic. (Mitchell's "Make Them Hear You" is still my single favorite moment in a theatre ever), but when it comes to vocals...I have to give the biggest prize to Jeremy Jordan. It is INSANE what he can do. He literally takes my breath away. And, yes, that includes Groban who is the GOAT, but there's just something about Jeremy that I feel like people are sleeping on. With that voice, he should be one of the biggest stars in the world. Just wait until "The Great Gatsby" opens on Broadway. I've seen it and you guys aren't going to know what hit you!
Not a single Rodgers and Hammerstein song on your list! Outrageous!! How could you not include Some Enchanted Evening and Younger Than Springtime from South Pacific? How about If I Loved You from Carousel, Edelweiss from The Sound of Music, Ten Minutes Ago from Cinderella or Oklahoma from Oklahoma! OK, this last may not be quite a ballad, but it has a great male solo part.
I don't know if I would call it a ballad, but "A Bit of Earth" from the musical The Secret Garden is a great male song sung by Archibald Craven after Mary asks if she have a 'bit of earth" to make things grow. Race to the Top of the Morning is also a great song, a bedtime story told in song. Or even the song Winter on the Wind sung by the character of Dicken. It's a musical I wish more people knew of or talked about and deserves to be on more lists like this one
Tom Collins I'll cover you reprised from Rent should have been on here... What a performance it always breaks me no matter who does it!!! Also Bring Him Home should have been number 1... I mean the vocal prowess it takes to master that song is significant!!! Such a breathtaking number. Also Maybe Tonight ( Tony ) West side Story.
"Why God Why", from "Miss Saigon". With the right voice, that song is heartbreaking. I've really concluded your stuff just doesn't like that show or something, since it never features on your lists despite being full of really powerful, amazing songs. Also seconding the person who mentioned "This Is the Moment", from "Jekyll & Hyde". That song is gorgeous, and I've gathered that prolonged high note at the end is a beast to hit well.
Fortunate to have seen Patinkin's and Peters' amazing performances in one of the most unusual musicals ever to be composed and staged. I nominate "Feeling Good" sung by Gilbert Price in _The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd_ . Among the half dozen other super hits from that show sung by Newley and Ritchard, in 1965, this song, sung by "The Negro" blew you away. No one has ever sung it better than Mr. Price. Indeed, were I a singer, I would be afraid to go near it, knowing I could never approach the emotional intensity and vocal clarity and strength of his performance. Sort of like taking on "Ol' Man River" after Paul Robeson.
"Let Them Hear You" from Ragtime makes me want to go out and cause some "good trouble". I think any one with a powerful, emotive voice can sing it but Brian Mitchell Stokes does an outstanding job.
All I'm going to say about this list is that if you spoke to ANY guys who have auditioned for any production in the last ten years, I promise you Santa Fe and Empty Chairs at Empty Tables are the most popular ballads to audition with.
@@marysueeasteregg ballads can also be songs that tell a story … and I wouldn’t necessarily call corner of the sky as a fast paced song - my boy bill is a ballad and it has up tempo sections; certainly if you look at songs on the list there are ones that are quickly paced.
I so love Jeremy Jordan's Sante Fe. I stop what I'm doing every time I hear it. Robert Goulet's recording is so beautifully belted for Camelot. Every version of Bring Him Home has been wonderful that I've hear. Company...The Impossible Dream( first time I heard it was Jim Nabors as Gomer Pyle)...mentioning One Song Glory...All of these have been wonderful. I have truly enjoyed this listing from you. I'm at Honorable Mentions, and am hoping the Number 1 is not another Sondheim...well, more Sondheim, Finishing the Hat. Really? Three Sondheims in the top 10? I've Never Been in Love Before, Oh What a Beautiful Morning, Some Enchanted Evening, Almost Like Being in Love, Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, On the Street Where You Live, Old Man River, Something's Coming. Yes, I'm old school but these are great ballads. Sondheim writes songs.
I was sitting here thinking how much I appreciate that you always identify the performers, even if it's just a recording without visuals - and then the guy from the BBC Proms singing Maria showed up with no identification! Who is that - because his ending was phenomenal!
I don't know if it counts, but you missed "Who i'd be" from Shrek the musical. But, it was a great top. Happy sunday afternoon, Emely. Take care and God bless you, greetings from Colombia to you as well.
YOU would have thought I wrote this list. Kudos! As a certified Sondheiophile, I applaud all his inclusions -- especially "Being Alive" and "Finishing the Hat."
You'll Never Walk Alone from Carousel takes down most of the songs on this list. If you want a male solo with range, emotion and character depth, Soliloquy from the same show has all three.
Being Alive (from Company) Endless Night (From Lion King The Musical) Bring Him Home (from Le Miz) If I Can't Love Her (from Beauty & The Beast) Start Of Something New (Reprise) (from HSM)
Glad I did not have to choose this list! It would be endless but you did include one of my all time favorite performers, songs and shows~~Robert Goulet, Camelot, If Ever I Would Leave You! Saw hime in person several times. He was magnificent!
How did Jesse L Martin's I'll Cover You reprise not make it on this list?!? Hauntingly beautiful, just heartbreaking! So glad to see a piece from Chess chosen, but wish another performance had been used. Also, not technically a ballad, but Robert Cuccioli in Jekyll and Hyde has to be one of the most demanding roles & he performed it brilliantly! Could have chosen Transformation or Confrontation for this list.
As is usual with these MsMojo choices, they are mostly modern, with few mentions of musicals from years ago. Where is the ultimate ballad ‘Ole Man River’ from Showboat?

Endless Night (From Lion King The Musical)
Bring Him Home (from Le Miz)
If I Can't Love Her (from Beauty & The Beast)
Start Of Something New (Reprise) (from HSM)
Richard Kiley--so great to hear that voice.
Glad I did not have to choose this list! It would be endless but you did include one of my all time favorite performers, songs and shows~~Robert Goulet, Camelot, If Ever I Would Leave You! Saw hime in person several times. He was magnificent!
I Don’t Care Much from Cabaret is stunning if performed well, and I don’t know if it counts, but Heaven on their Minds from JCS is incredible
Epic III from Hadestown. Everything.
Is there a top ten female ballads in musicals version? This was a very good list!
I thought this would be super specific until I saw that the words had a space in between them. Musicals featuring weddings do get pretty interesting.
MsMojo- you finally made a list that I can get behind.
Bui Doi--Miss Saigon.
"For those who understand, no explanation is needed. For those who do not understand, no explanation is possible."
As is usual with these MsMojo choices, they are mostly modern, with few mentions of musicals from years ago. Where is the ultimate ballad ‘Ole Man River’ from Showboat?
Edelweiss from The Sound of Music has practically become the national anthem of Austria. That's impact for a number from a musical.
As someone who recogonized Run Away With Me, the official name for that musical is The Mad Ones and it's so good.
Some of my favorites!!!
"I'd Rather Be Sailing" from 'A New Brain'! Hands down THE BEST Ballad (although not a Broadway song, a song that hits to the heart).
Music of the night.
Bring him home.
It only takes a moment
I love "Anthem" from "Chees".
I forgot that one! The one that gets me is Pity the Child!
Michael Crawford belts through his nose.
And why is 'Soliloquy' from Carousel not on this list?
