Pianist, educator, composer, and TH-cam who Isn't Trying, Jeremy Siskind, talks about the roles of each different alteration, and particularly the sharp nine! - เพลง
I'm glad you mentioned the #9 to b9 resolution in the major key. Very melodic and pleasing. After years of fooling around with alterations in the major key resolution I found three pairs of notes that have the same intervallic relationship to each note in a tonic Major triad: #9->b9 to the 5th of the tonic major, root->b7 (of the dominant) to the 3rd of the tonic, and b13->#11 to the root of the tonic. Example in C.
Bb->Ab to G (5th of the tonic Major)
G->F to E (3rd of the tonic Major)
Eb-Db to C (root of the tonic Major)
So the altered pairs are sorta mimicking what resolves diatonically to the tonic 3rd in a ii-V-I, but with the tonic 5th, and the tonic root. Phew! That is hard to put in words. Try it on your instrument. Very simple. As a guy who likes to improvise melodies, I found this to be a bit of gold. Interesting or mundane, depending on your viewpoint. Remember kids: resolve those tensions when you can.
Answer: Arabic Numeral. This is a useful explanation of altered tones, including sharp 9! (The video is gold, Jeremy, gold!)
Thank you on all accounts!
About to say the same comment (on all accounts)!
I too was thinking "Arabic" however I believe that is actually not where they originate but actually come from India historically.
@@alphaomega6062 But where would be without the invention of zero? Just a rhetorical question, there.😄
I love how you really committed to the Seinfeld theme!
This is really helpful for me. I have been working on my altered game.
Awesome! Enjoy, Tom!
Jeremy is the master of his domain!
Lol Marla - so good!
I want lentil soup and a sharp nine from the Soup Nazir. Thank you, Jeremy. This lesson made me much more aware of the subtle melody within the chord. I usu choose either b9 or #9, and now, aha aha aha!!! ⭐🌹🔥🌹⭐
Aha aha aha aha!
Glad you also talked about the #11. I tend to use it the least and was trying to figure out when it works best.
Great! Happy #11-ing!
Your books are great! My son has them and is learning so much! Thank you for this video-I just encountered the #9 yesterday in All the Things You Are w the E7#9. Wow! This song has some interesting melody notes against the chords. It might be a fun song to do a video on. Thank you again!! God be with you.
You’re underselling with the title! ..covering all the alterations right to the point
Fantastic as always.
so to sum up:
1. Play the #9
2. Yada Yada Yada
3. Resolve
These altered chord extensions … ARE MAKING ME THIRSTY !!!!!!! 😳
Okay, I lol’ed at this one!
@@JeremySiskind haha, bullseye! 😁 Appreciate your vids. 🙂🙏🏼
An excellent quote
Arabic numeral :)
Great lesson.
Many thanks, Ugo!
Great video, Jeremy (watched till the end). I'm curious how you're showing the keys your playing since it sounds like the piano is acoustic???
Never change Jeremy 😂With dominant alterations I think it's worth knowing what the dominant tones are in the context of the tonic. I think you can just subtract 3 or add 4 from the dominant tones. So the 9th of the dominant = the 6th of the tonic. 13th/6th of the dominant = 3rd of the tonic. Etc. Alterations pretty much carry over too I think.
Amazing way of teaching. I am an amateur but I like to think about the last voicing "#9 to M7" as "quasi-quartal" if that makes any kind of sense.
You’re MUCH better at teaching and playing piano than at doing Seinfeld impersonations 😀
great discussion. soup czar approved.
Those were some spongeworthy chords! Thanks!
lol, thanks much, Ray!
Generally, can't we see these tones as just leading into or pulling us towards the chord tones of the next chord? When there are two tones, like the #9 and b13 pulling in the same direction, they make our ears yearn for that resolution, sorta, eh?
The sharp 9? Is that a Titleist? What do you know, a hole in one! Loved this deal
Newman was under utilized.
It’s true - for the cultural impact he had, he’s not actually in the series that much, right?
Is this also called inner voice movement…moving from the sharp 9 to the flat nine?
Makes me wonder what all these #9 chords are about in 3views of a secret or Goodbye Pork Pie Hat or Jon Balke’s (4th chord is A7#9 )Horizontal Song? Maybe I should accept they are all blues chords. Confuses me…. Head hurts. 😢😅
You and your big hands lol. Well, I can still utilize this knowledge by modifying your tenths. I’m just jealous that I can’t play them like you because they sound beautiful. You do a pretty good Seinfeld too!
Didn't know Jerry Seinfeld could play jazz piano, honestly
The tension store called and they're running out of 9ths
brilliant as ever. but you should have worn the puffy shirt
I just had a garbage disposal installed on my piano. I prepared this food while rehearsing!
I actually don’t get this reference. Are there too many “levels”?
@@JeremySiskind Kramer decides to spend his life in the shower, because he can't figure how to shower efficiently. He has a phone, radio, TV in there. Then he wants to start cooking, but the drain gets clogged with carrot shavings and lettuce leaves. So he installs a garbage disposal in his shower. Last scene involves a germophobe, and as they praise the food he brought, he tells them, "I prepared it while I was bathing."
Whenever I encounter a sharp 9th I just play the tritone sub.
Newman!
Helloooooooo...SISKIND
Apparently, Newman literally lived next to a jazz club in LA and organized a noise complaint petition (not joking)
@@JeremySiskind Music is an invasion of our personal privacy! (Caddyshack reference in play)
Zoinks!
Some pianists call it a b10 in some cases
I hope if your wife sees this she doesn't do an Elaine and shove you into the refrigerator door! Is this setting a precedent I wonder? Will future videos contain Kramer or George impersonations? Perhaps on second thoughts you should curb your enthusiasm? ;) Great video makes a lot of sense. Thank you.
"The sharp 9 is enharmonicly equivalent to the minor third." Heard it here first
It moved Jerry.
Lolol
Sharp 9 ??? "...not that there's anything wrong with that!"
My critic: you didn't play the Seinfeld them before the jokes.
Whats the deal with soup nazis? (context is so important 🤣)
Peppered with Seinfeld what’s the deal
Big ass salad.
