Canadian here. Here is something else you may not have considered, Brian. The first thing Trump did when he got into office the first time was pull out of the TPP (now the CPTPP) which is the biggest trading bloc in the world and consists of Canada, Mexico, Japan, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Brunei Darusallam, Malaysia, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. Canada also has the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement with the EU. We have been diversifying our trading relationships over the last 8 years. When Trump first announced the 25% tariffs, the Aluminum Association of Canada announced that it was encouraging its members to immediately start looking for clients in Europe. Considering the fact that Russia is now under sanctions, they need the materials we produce. In the end, Canada might rebound faster than the US if the trade war happens.
We have been laying the groundwork for this eventuality since before Trump was even considered for president.

While the smuggling issue might persist, it's NOTHING compared to OUR OWN southern border that has opened right up over the last 4 years. Canadian senior here. There’s plenty enough for Canadians to gripe about internally, and we do since this is a democratic country. I don’t have to be a fan of my Prime Minister in order to appreciate him for defending what my country stands for. I didn’t much care for Jean Crètien, but was immensely proud of him saying ‘NO’ to the WMD nonsense during the ‘W Bush’ administration. I get so very tired of the US thinking that we ‘owe’ them something because we’re neighbours. The only thing we owe our neighbours is to be peaceful and helpful - but that doesn’t mean that we can’t stand up for ourselves, make our own decisions or say ‘NO’ to bullying, abuse and the threat of tyranny or the whims of stupidity.
