- The WDR BIG BAND plays "Splanky" (composer: Neal Hefti; arranger: Jörg Achim Keller). Solos are played by Billy Test on piano, Paul Heller on tenor saxophone and Raphael Klemm on trombone. The WDR BIG BAND is conducted by Jörg Achim Keller. Produced as part of the WDR JAZZCLUB concert "Atomic Hefti" at WDR Studios Bocklemünd / Cologne (October 2022).

Wonderful acknowledgement by Raphael to Al Grey. The plunger puts the trombone in another world and Raphael captures it beautifully. Ab/Fmi isn't an easy key to solo in, especially while holding a plunger and manipulating it. Great sound and technique, Raphael!

I wanted to like this, but the constant modulations are too much. They never get to a shout chorus, which, by the end, your soul is begging for.
I like the brighter tempo. It's still slightly back on the beat (Basie style) and grooves hard with great solos.
Catching up. You cannot go wrong with WDR Big Band. So lovely, always elegant,classy smooth jazz. Thank you.

One absolutely irrefutable fact -- both the Count and Neal Hefti would be immensely pleased with this performance. Swinging all the way, based on the blues. Solos individual, not covered. Al Grey -- same, same. It is HARD to solo with a plunger -- don't ask me how I know. LOL
