The damage model in Need For Speed Undercover is really elaborate when you consider the context of the game: illegal street racing, with police chaces and modifications to the cars like new engines and stuff. These things on their own are already quite expensive to license and convince car manufacturers to allow you to do (which is the reason why the Underground series, Most Wanted 2005 and Carbon didn't have any damage model whatsoever), so seeing actual deformation of body parts and them flying off even on cars like Bugatti is quite impressive. They must've sunken a lot of money into this, shame the game didn't really live up to it

It was more realistic back then with *"NFS:High Stakes"* and *"NFS:Hot Pursuit"* around year 2000s. Not only they had visual and mechanical damage(including spikestripped tires), they also had light switches and ability to play our own music CD as car's entertainment system. Well, NFS Pro Street/Undercover had great damage too. NFS The Run also pretty decent but bit nerfed. It is ironic how these games has better car damage than the modern racing games. Also NFS High Stakes for a 1999 game still has more impressive damage than the most overrated NFS from 2003-2006.

Nfs underground and underground 2 didnt really have damage, just temporary shattered windows during the crash scene. Underground 2 beta/demo did have the trunk open as part of the damage model but was cut in the final game.
The only visual damage in NFS UG1 was actually the falling side mirrors while NFS UG2 only shattered windows. It is ironic how even NFS High Stakes has better damage model than these NFS. But the cop cars have better damage models that the regular cars which doesn't make any sense.

You forgot for NFS The Run where if you drive straight into the barrels in stage 8 or in tunnels and trains, your car explodes and shows the “wasted” cutscene and if the mob shoots you with the helicopter or with their cayennes
in the beta version you will see smoke out from engine or light part been cracked when wrecked during drag races but sadly actually been cutted. But you didn't know license plate dropped when rear damage in final ver.
Pro Street was the only game where both driving and damage was realistic and on point. On rest of the NFS games there is no such thing as damage, you do an insane crash at 300 kmh and car structure is still same. I was super excited to play Pro Street when it first came out and was super sad when they shut down multiplayer servers.
Because I have played both games, Shift 1 has better damage model. Cars get damaged and deformed more easily and brutally. The only things Shift 2 has better are the tires comeoff and engine temperature will potentially break the engine.
@@Danio_100 Forza got restrictions for a lot of manufacturers. From NFS MW I know the legendary BMW also shouldn't get as damaged as the damage engine would have allowed.
Fun fact: NFSU2 was supposed to have damaging physics as you can see on video where a custom Mazda MX-8's trunk was opened/damaged but sadly they removed it in the development stage(i think?).
