  • How do you prepare to share the gospel? In this highly practical short talk, Matt Smethurst-author of ‘Before You Open Your Bible’ and ‘Before You Share Your Faith’-outlines seven tips for becoming “evangelism ready.” “The greatest obstacle to evangelism is not unbelievers,” Smethurst says. “The greatest obstacle to evangelism is Christians who don’t share the gospel.

    1. Grasp the gospel
    2. Check your context.
    - No need to overemphasize our differences - we have all been made in His image and embraced sin.
    - But, know your audience - some people don’t have a context for a supernatural god, though in asia generally ppl do have this assumption. Otherwise jargon is misunderstood unless we define it.
    - No need to be pressured to make the message cool; the goal is to make it clear.
    3. Love the lost
    - 1 corinthians 13 - we need to communicate BECAUSE we love the lost person. This injects urgency and reminds us to never be accusationary, judgemental or skimmy
    4. Mind your manners
    - “Im right, you’re wrong” attitude is conforming to the world’s pattern of communicating in outrage
    - Speak the truth in love, not speak the truth is love
    - Our posture may undermine the gospel - what may help is empathy to remember what it was like to be lost ourselves
    - Our counter-cultural message must be accompanied by a counter-cultural tone.
    5. Face your fear
    - Dont kick the can down the road to the next christian! Take the opportunity and reaffirm that fear is not omnipotent and lean into the Lord. Imagine if the first person who shared with you had been too scared to do so.
    - Almost always the conversation with the lost person goes better than we feared.
    6. Pray for power.
    - Evangelism isnt converting someone, it is telling someone about jesus in the power of the holy spirit and leaving the results to God.
    - Internalise this. Who but God canresurrect people who are dead in sin (eph 2)? We speak to the casket, God cracks it open.
    7. Then, start to speak!
    - Most non christians you meet have never actually rejected the gospel, because they havent heard it yet.
    - The greatest obstacle to evangelism may actually be christians who dont share the gospel - evangelism has not been tried and found wanting so much as it has been found difficult and found untried.

If you're starting at 1:23 you'll miss the important words before then.

    1) Grasp the gospel. You can't do evangelism if you don't understand the evangel. To understand the good news you have to understand the nature of "news."
    2) Check your context. Know your audience. Listen carefully to what they value and think and see the world.
    3) Love the lost. Do they sense your care for them?
    4) Mind your manners.
    5) Face your fear: awkwardness, rejection, embarassment, no answer to a question.
    6) Pray for power.
    7) Start to speak. Most non-Christians you meet have never rejected the gospel. Most haven't heard or understood the real gospel to reject it.
The real obstacle for evangelism is Christians who don't share the gospel.

      I might even add:
#8. Calibrate your expectations. Many people will hear only foolishness when you tell them the good news, because blind people can't see; so unless the Spirit works even your best & clearest presentations will still get scorned.
#9. When you say something dumb while witnessing, remember:
      a. God is in control - Neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything; but only God who gives growth. (1Col3)
      b. Get'm next time - Forget what lies behind & strain toward what lies ahead. (Phil3)
      c. God's got you - Don’t rejoice that the demons obey you but that your name is written in heaven. (Luke10)
      d. You don't have to be the apostle Paul - Godliness with contentment is great gain. (1Tim6)
