Humanity is in essence what makes a sentient human a sentient human - sanity, will and strength to live. So Hollows are the dead people who have little to no humanity, as well as sanity and will, left.

If you kill all the chaos eaters before speaking to him and he gives you a ring, that means he survives and you’re not supposed to get this ending (so he’s not supposed to be at ash lake if you did this). This ending is for when siegmeyer tries to battle the chaos eaters and ends with more than 50% of his health. There’s another ending (so 3 possible endings) where he battles the chaos eaters with you but has less than 50% of his health, in which case he gives you that same ring but he dies. Basically, if you got the speckled stoneplate ring, you’re not supposed to get the ending with him in ash lake. I didn’t know all this until I got confused cuz I didn’t see him in ash lake either and I looked it up on the internet. I did the thing where I killed all the chaos eaters with my bow before speaking to him and he gave me that ring. Tbh the reward you get for the ash lake ending is the best cuz titanite slab are really rare and obviously very useful, but I’m glad that he at least survived for me.
pretty much, a hollow is an undead that goes crazy and attacks everything in sight. Ps: You are an undead if you are branded with the dark sign. Not every human is an undead, for example sieglinde of catarina. You become hollow once you lose your "reason to live" or your "motivation".
I like to think that all the dead bodies that you see on the ground with items or souls to collect were like you on the same quest but gave up and went hollow.

So how does this all work? You get the darksign, but how do you become undead, do you die? and is a hollow just an insane undead?
