  • The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger was first published in Liberty magazine in 1927, in January, two months before The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place.
    I think it's a great story. I read it ages ago, but re-read it over Christmas. I'm glad I ended the series on this one. Please let me know your thoughts in the comments!
    I'd be very glad to hear your views on this story, as it kind of blew me away for all sorts of reasons. It's been a long haul to get these on to TH-cam but finally the channel boasts all the Sherlock Holmes tales and novels and quite a few other Conan Doyle stories too, including many of his historical and supernatural ones.

    Thank you for the amazing gift of your voice and these stories. I enjoy listening to them again when I can. I vote for Christie next. If you ever tire of mystery, I think you would do a fantastic job of the Jeeves series by PG Wodehouse. You would do a fantastic job reading the shipping report! Looking forward to what you do next.

      I’m glad you commented on this. My thoughts exactly. Sui*ide was seen as a criminal offence until relatively recently, punishable by death I kid you not if caught in the act or as an accomplice to said act . I may be incorrect but it was certainly a criminal offence, probably related to Catholicism/ religious reasons. It’s not our life to be done away with but God’s. Or something like that. Anyway we live in different times now. For better or worse. She said it, never judge lest you walk in my shoes and Holmes had no reply.

    A very fine read my good sir Greg. At the end of the story I was slightly dissapointed with how little Sherlock Holmes did in this story, like in the Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb. But I do agree with your view of the story. It is thought provoking. Also you saying that it is the final canon story got me to wonder how I first heard of Sherlock Holmes. Was it a movie, the poster with the hat and pipe, a cartoon or did someone mention him or his proffession. In any case this story does show on of the greatest virtues that Sherlock Holmes can teach us in my view. He is a great listener.

For a follow up to Holmes, why not look up 'The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes' compilation that was put together by Hugh Greene in the 1970s, and which showcases a number of authors who were writing short detective fiction around the same time as Conan Doyle. The stories themselves are in the public domain and they are a great jumping off point for exploring the emerging market for detective fiction in the wake of Conan Doyle's success in the Strand Magazine.

    Thank you so much for all the recordings! I knew the stories from Czech translations but your narration painted them in true vivid British Victorian colours for me, even more than the Jeremy Brett series did. There are hundreds of details I suddenly noticed and understood, and dozens of historical trivia I learned.
    This story truly is very moving. I remember the sentence "I´m sending you my temptation" from my childhood. The final conversation between Holmes and the veiled lady is so... human. It shows what a vast gap, or even a precipice there is between two people who lead vastly different lives. It´s like they each live in a different world. And the reader can understand both of them. Holmes´ words must have sounded incredibly hollow to the veiled lady... and yet she was strong enough to obey them.
    Holmes doesn´t sound like the usual Holmes here. I think sir A.C. Doyle knew conversations like this from his medical practice. Perhaps he was in the role of Holmes, talking to patients with cancer about the importance of patience in this impatient world, but knowing how hard it is for them...
    I´d love to hear you narrate Walden by H.D. Thoreau, plus Brother Cadfael stories by Ellis Peters, but they´re probably not out of copyright :-( And a Polish chemist Waclaw Golembowicz wrote great Holmes pastiches "Chemical Stories of Sherlock Holmes".

    • @sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio
      @sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi MartaVdz Very interesting observations. I think there is something very spiritual here - something Doyle is acknowledging perhaps as he comes to the end of his career. That Holmes has limited powers in the great scheme of things? Anyway, I did find it a great story on which to end. Someone sent me 'Walden' and I'm afraid I've never opened it: I'll have a look at it soon! These Chemical Stories sound very interesting - are they available in English translation do you know?
      Thanks MartaVdz!

    • @martavdz4972
      @martavdz4972 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Oh yeah, agreed! "That Holmes has limited powers in the great scheme of things?" Might very well be. It shows how much times had changed and sir Conan Doyle had changed, since Holmes was seen as an all-powerful protection against criminals like Jack the Ripper in the 1890´s. The last few cases are also more modest, no big state affairs 🙂
      Unfortunately, it looks like the nine Chemical Stories haven´t been translated into English 😞 Which is a shame because they really are interesting. Well-built plots with unusual details. They include a story where a duke puts his diamonds in a bank safe but a month later, he finds worthless pebbles in their places. And a story where Holmes sees an oddly woven spider web in a garden and insists on investigating, because he deduces that someone is poisoning someone with a certain type of alcaloids in that house.
      I hope they will be translated into English some day 🙂
      All the best to you, sir, it´s been an honour 😊

    Can you record more home's short stories. "The Exploits of Sherlock Holmes" is a collection of twelve short stories featuring the world-famous detective Sherlock Holmes, as narrated by his loyal friend and biographer Dr. John Watson. The stories were written by Adrian Conan Doyle, the youngest son of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and John Dickson Carr, a celebrated mystery writer.
    The stories in the collection are set in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and feature some of Holmes' most famous cases, such as "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" and "The Adventure of the Final Problem." The collection also includes lesser-known cases, such as "The Adventure of the Seven Clocks" and "The Adventure of the Unique Hamlet."
    The stories are authorized by the Conan Doyle Estate, which means that they are considered to be true to the original series. Fans of Sherlock Holmes will appreciate the attention to detail and the faithful representation of the world of Victorian London.
    "The Exploits of Sherlock Holmes" was first published in 1954 and has since become a classic work of detective fiction. It is a must-read for fans of Sherlock Holmes and for anyone who enjoys a good mystery.
    "The Secret Journal of Dr. Watson" by Phil Growick is a collection of short stories that are purportedly written by Watson and feature new cases for Holmes to solve.
    While these stories are not considered part of the original canon of Sherlock Holmes stories, they can be an enjoyable read for fans of the character and the genre.

    Good evening!!! Please, to all the avid listeners, I have been searching for a Sherlocl Holmes story that I can never finish because I always fall sleep. The problem is that I can not remember the tittle and its making me crazy! I alredy listen to basically all the playlist...twice... and even ask my wife for help... and we can not find it...I am starting to think that my brain created the story or maybe its just a dream... can someone help me find it?
    The story starts with Watson talking about the warm weather... then Holmes comes to eat dinner, I think he makes fun of the book watson is reading... then Watson ask him where was him during the whole day... and try to makes Holmes answer... at some point Watson ask something like "locally?" Refering to the place of the investigation and Holmes tells him that yes, very... that he was at the basement and told Watson that if he wants to know what he is working on he muat promise not to leave the house or talk to anyone... Watson accept but a couple of days later an old friend of Watson comes looking for him and against Sherlock instructions he invites in... THATS THE POINT WHERE I ALWAYS FELL SLEEP!!!
    PLEASE HELP!!! I need to know the end of the story or I will never be able to sleep again...

      8 months later...
      Good evening everyone, some months ago, I wrote a comment asking help to find a story, I got some answers but no one can identify it, so I decided to listen to all the stories in order to find it. Here I am, 6 months later and I did not find it!!! I am truly starting to think that I dream this and it doesnt actually exist!!! It starts describing a very cold and foggy day, sherlock its at the basement making a lot of noise and watson is reading something, then at dinner sherlock tells watson something about a very important experiment (something about bullets being fired, i think) and tells him that if he wants to know about this he must promise to stay at home and not talk to anyone, watson accepts this and sherlock goes back to the basement; then in the middle of the nigth a friend of watson arrives at the house and ask him to receive him. Thats the part where I always felt asleep. If anyone can help me with this I will be forever grateful!!! I am sure that im not creative enough to dream the story by myself but I listened to all the stories here, even the pastiches and I CAN NOT FOUND IT, maybe I dont remember correctly or I dont know... help please!!

    It is just today that I've finally finished listening to everything as part of my annual recollection. Your brilliant, clear voice has accompanied me throughout my long suffering office job in where I thought I have no time for my yearly "rereading" of the entire collection.
    I've been a subscriber for long now, eagerly waiting for all of the stories to be narrated by such an amazing, talented man as yourself. And it has finally come to fruition. I cannot thank you enough.
    I look forward to your future endeavors! I will definitely check out your other uploads, and continue to be enchanted with your wonderful voice.
    P.S. I wonder if we would have a chance on the Exploits of Sherlock Holmes? I have a few but notable favorites there. Or Seven Percent Solution. Either way, time to delve in some Poe!
