  • Average Speed Checks suck for any Driver! But can you speed, even just a little bit in an Average Speed Check? With some basic Maths and Science, maybe, is the answer..
    Once again, I do not condone speeding. Average Speed Checks are there, to save lives.

    The 10℅+2 rule is widely used but does depend on police authority .A report was obtained last year using FOI ( think it was which or RAC)details and of those police authorities who returned info most were using 10%rule. At the end of day speeding fines are a big earner and if you're 1 mph over limit you're speeding in eye of law.

    My mother-in-law (who isn't the brightest candle in the box) got caught speeding in an 'average speed' zone. She travelled the same stretch of road every day to get to and from work. However on Thursday, there was an accident, so she had to slow down, then was stationary for about 30 minutes, before gradually picking up speed and carrying on her way. She knows that average means "add them all together, then divide by how many there are", so on Friday, she thought "I was stationary for 30 minutes yesterday, so today I can go faster than the speed limit, because my average will still be OK!" When I say she isn't the brightest, there have been times when she has come to stay at our home. When she arrives, my other half offers her a drink, to which she replies "I shouldn't really, I've been driving". We remind her that she's not going anywhere, but she insists that she shouldn't drink and drive.
    On another note, police forces in the UK can enforce their own interpretation of the "10% + 2mph" rule. Technically, anyone can be charged with speeding for going 1mph over the limit, so the 10% + 2mph is just a guideline. My neighbour got caught twice, by a mobile camera while taking his wife to work, then returning again 15 minutes later. The speed limit is 20mph and his penalties were for travelling at 23mph and 26mph.

    the short answer is that anyone can speed on any road as long as they are prepared to accept the consequences .
    I rather think you meant to ask whether it is possible to exceed the speed limit within an average speed check and not be caught ; the answer is that if you do exceed the limit at one point between average speed checkpoints , you must go under the limit sufficiently to bring your average speed back within the limit .
    Having said that , it is still an offence to exceed the speed limit at any point within the average speed check , so if you happen to be caught by an unmarked police vehicle , or by any other means , you can still be charged .

I went through 1 camera under the speed limit then pulled into the petrol station for about 20 minutes. I set off carrying on along the same route didn't see the 2nd average speed camera I think I was doing 53mph managed to slow down about 2/3 meters just before I passed the camera. Am I expecting a speeding ticket?

    • @lakeswildcamping1981

      I think the way the camera s work is by working out your average speed between the two points, not your speed at the places where the cameras are located - if you spent 20 mins at a services then chances are your average speed would be very low. There may of course have been other cameras. You would normally hear within 14 days.

    Beyond all this it's worth saying that it's not Speed that kills it's the nut behind the steering wheel ! Speed can be perfectly safe when used appropriately. Far too many "fastards" are not capable of handling speed if the slightest thing goes wrong. The place for high speeds is the race track not the highways. The best speed limits are placed so that pedestrians know what to expect. The worst are put there to catch revenue and are often sneaky and not a contribution to road safety. Education is better prevention than cure - trouble is it needs brain-washing for some gits.

  • @gizzymoee
    @gizzymoee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Actually, by switching lanes your not tricking the camera your invalidating a ticket. Gaining speed in order to pass a vehicle SAFELY is allowed within the UK law, and thus as the camera cannot see you do this they have to dismiss the ticket.

    • @LRC92
      @LRC92 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What are you implying, doing over the speed limit is legal as long as you are overtaking? Nonsense. The official Highway Code advise is that overtaking drivers should move quickly past the vehicle in front, but only when it's safe and LEGAL to do so. If you have to speed to do a safe overtake you are breaking the law and can be prosecuted.

    The cameras on the A90 from Dundee to Aberdeen don't do you unless you are doing 78+ mph. The law must require extra speed at parts in order to overtake slower vehicles like arctic lorries. If this wasn't allowed it would be unsafe as drivers would become inpatient whilst also causing delays. But you should be sticking to 70mph if there's no need to overtake

      There is no defence in law that you were speeding in order to make an overtake. Put simply, in the eyes of the law, if you can't finish the overtake without speeding then you shouldn't have started it. It's a very common misconception that you're "allowed" to speed whilst overtaking.

    Driving in an average speed area of the motorway is tedious balancing that throttle at say 50 mph, I fortunately have cruise control and that makes it easier, as as a bonus I also have a 'distance between the car in front' button that keeps me at a set safe distance from the car in front therefore reducing or increasing my speed up to 50 mph automatically, then you get some fhooking whanker who pulls in between you and the car in front and fhooks up the whole system.

      I use the average speed setting on my instrument cluster when passing through these average speed areas as well. Reset it at each camera and if you come across slow traffic (we have plenty of farm vehicles on the roads where I live) you can pass them quickly and then adjust your speed down enough to be back to the required average speed before the next camera. We also have stretches of road with average speed cameras and side roads. People joining or leaving between camera locations can go at any speed they want without triggering a penalty. I would just point out that the roads are usually single carriageway only.

    I don’t have a problem with speed cameras however I do have a problem with variable speed cameras on motorways. I don’t see how you can legally change a speed limit and make you slow down to the new limit in a couple of seconds and before anyone says they give you a grace period legally they shouldn’t as the speed limit is in a red circle so it should be enforceable from the very Millisecond it changes. The thing is it’s dangerous they know it’s dangerous but will they change it not in a million years… This can easily be solved by changing the speed limit and removing the red circle for 1 minute to allow people to adjust to the new limit. Gantries have the power to do this but they never do….

    I’ve known for ages that my speedo is 2mph faster & I set my limiter to account for that, then get held up by people who are working off their speedo 🤦‍♀️ my sister’s speedo reads 4mph faster than actual GPS speed…she already drives like a snail so I can imagine she causes other drivers issues 😂

    Dudes making this a way bigger deal than it is. speed cameras aren't that harsh you could do roughly 5 over and be safe if you can't keep your car within 5 mph when trying you should be off the road

    10% + 2 is about right. They dont want too many tickets that can be contested so make sure its enough to be a conviction. You can speed in an average speed zone because its "average". 50mph on the car is about 47mph if you use GPS so in a 50mph limit zone keep under 54mph on the GPS average and you will never see a ticket. Thats why it looks like some people speed a lot but really its the margin up and down your seeing. Hence your going too slow and trucks overtake you at your reported 50mph but the trucks GPS is on 50 - 52mph. I drive around 1000 miles a week and have done this for years. I will say if the Overhead speed signs post 60, 50, 40 like round Birmingham random you need to make sure you go through cameras observing the same rule 10% +2 so 80mph on a 70mph using the clock wont get a flash but 80 GPS can get you a flash. Likewise if it says 50mph dont go through more than 57mph or its a risk. Thats how I do it anyway. Sick of the whole country getting slower and slower but its fine to do 60mph toward each other on a 10 foot wide road in the dark yet the motorway is a fucking joke...
    Trucks should be banned from doing less than 56 mph as well as they are a fucking pain in the ass!! As for A and some B roads allow them to do 60mph again, its like the fucking horse and cart days some runs.

    1) the construction & use regs allow speedometers to over indicate by a maximum of 10% at any given speed from 25mph upwards
    2) the distance between cameras is the distance travelled along the road ; not the 'as the crow flies' distance between sites
    ) the speed limit is absolute : you can be convicted for 1mph over the limit ; the 10% +2 mph is the ACPO GUIDELINE which is used by many forces , BUT NOT ALL , and if you come across a traffic officer in abad mood you CAN be charged for 1 mph over .

      It is averaged over the distance between cameras and also between groups of camera (first and third as well as first and second, second and third). So for example a 1 mile gap between two cameras on a 60mph road means you should take at least 1 minute to go that mile. If you did the first 1/2 mile at 90mph it would take 20 seconds so you would have to travel the second 1/2 mile in 40 seconds, so at 45mph, to average 60 overall. Trying to do these calculations in your head when driving is probably going to be too hard and also distracting when you are driving. An average speed display that can be reset at each camera makes this relatively easy to do. So if I was doing this on a single carriageway road and you were travelling at 55 when I caught up to you I could speed up to overtake you then slow to a speed that would take me down to an average of 60 before the next camera. The amount of time I spent behind you at 55 would determine the speed I would be able to go at once past you to hit 60 at the next camera. This is really useful for passing people who seem to be so scared by speed cameras that they drop to 10mph lower than the speed limit to be safe from prosecution for speeding and for slow farm traffic.

      Wait so does that mean on motorways like the M4, the cameras are still set to 70 speed for fines even tho there are 50 speed limit sings everywhere?

    • @martinconnelly1473
      @martinconnelly1473 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On multiple carriage way roads such as motorways it is possible for a large vehicle to obscure you from a camera. If this is the case you may not get spotted by some cameras and so not get a ticket. However when there are multiple cameras the average between all sections is calculated to account for this. So you may get spotted by the 1st and 4th camera and the average for those will be calculated so doing 90 before you realised there were cameras then getting held up in traffic may not trigger a penalty.
