Bought a used TD-20 kit. Beautiful, owned by a little old lady who only played it at church on Sundays. :) Okay, maybe it wasn't a little old lady, but it was a church kit. Pristine condition, except... a low backup battery. So I watched this video and changed out the battery. It took about 10 minutes. Hint: use a variable speed reversible drill, not a screwdriver. Thanks for the video; it was exactly what was needed.
Great video, thanks. I see you don't have the TDW-20 installed -- I'd absolutely recommend to get this expansion module, it makes a big difference in sound, kits and playability and is worth every penny!
I have not yet had to dig that deep into the TD-20. It is seated beneath several circuit boards and quite a few ribbons. If you are comfortable with electronics and stay organized as you disassemble, it is totally do-able, however, be very careful that you are in a static free environment. I would first post over on the VDrum forums to see if anyone else has done this exact procedure. Best wishes on your LCD adventures! If you are successful, be sure to post on the forums. Thanks for this video I tried it on my own V drum TD 12 and it worked great. Roland wanted to charge over $100 plus shipping just to change the battery. Once the back cover was opened it only took a few seconds to change it.
Just managed to replace the battery on my TD-12 using this video as a guide (I had to apply a lot more pressure to get the battery out, but it worked). Thanks for making this video!
Hey Ricardo, sorry to hear that. This doesn’t sound like a battery issue to me. Sounds more power related. Are you using the OEM power cable? Is the electric source clean? Might also be temperature related, but it would be hard to know if it is happening inside. If it happens again, feel if the power cord is warmer than normal. I hope you can find an answer. Good luck- maybe check over at the VDrum forums to see if anything similar has happened to others?

Although a low battery might cause some issues with the module, your problems sound like a short circuit or perhaps a bad connection somewhere on the board. A low battery would cause you to experience the inability to store less information like patterns or custom kits, and eventually a factory reset will occur every time you turn the module on. You might check with a licensed technician or view the vdrum forums for help. Good luck!
Say will this fix the problem of the screen visuals being blacked out halfway and some blinking after it’s been on for a bit ? It says to change battery when you first turn it on.
Thank you! I was afraid to do this but thanks to your instructions I confidently performed this operation and my TD-20 is now good as new! :) BTW, is that a snare stand you use for your TD-20? I still have it on the rack but find it limiting....
+Alain L. Patry Thanks. Glad to hear this made things easier for you. It can be a little intimidating opening it up, but thankfully they're pretty easy to work on for the most part. As for the stand, that is a Pearl cymbal stand base that I am using in the video. I have since converted a music stand that broke into a holder as well, which works great. I agree, the position on the rack can be a bit limited. Nice to be able to move around freely!
@KoenigPilsner - Thanks for watching. It is nice to hear you have gotten use out of your expansion card. I have thought a lot about buying one, but had yet to really hear any opinions on it. I did get to play a demo set with it at Sweetwater when I went to see the Bill Bruford drum clinic; Seemed to have as few really nice new sounds. Thanks for your comment.
Daniel, if you're using a TD-20, you will actually get a pop up on the LCD screen that says "backup battery low." The module can still run a decent amount of time after this warning. I let mine completely burnout once and I think I got a cpl months usage. There were no other indications that the battery was getting low that I can recall before this happening however. Hope this helps.

The audio levels seem much lower lately and Ive lost sound completely via the left (stereo) channel in both the headphones and line out jacks. I was wondering if that might be a battery issue. I know you're not a roland tech, but but any insights are greatly appreciated. Ill try replacing the battery and see if that fixes the issue.
Daniel Lemunyan Sounds like you have some dirty or shorted connections. I'd try take the cover and plate off and inspect the connections. Some electronics cleaner should do the trick. If not, might be time to replace the wiring/jack. Good luck!
I often encountered this after the module was running for a while. I don’t believe this is battery related, but more likely temp-related as you mentioned. (For anyone reading who doesn’t know - while holding the “Kit” button, turn the “Value” dial to adjust contrast).

I was able to find a post specific to this module on a forum called mikedolebear, and it sounds easy. The guy also lists the battery it uses. Good luck! Thanks everyone. Hey fatchoppers01, so I might be able to do that the next time I change the battery, but truthfully, cleaning the pots and channels should be as easy having some electronics cleaner and compressed air. Just make sure you have no static electricity around! :)
Correct. There is no way to avoid a factory reset (unless you keep the unit powered on and plugged in while opening it up which is not recommended), so you should therefore back up your settings and kits to the compact flash card through which you can reload once the battery is replaced. Good luck.
@@ronfairbanks8649 I’ve never experienced a situation where you can’t make changes due to a low battery. Perhaps it has gotten so low that it has now way of doing so? Typically, as soon as I get the low battery warning, I just insert the compact flash card and backup the module with any kits I’ve customized, replace the battery, and the reload them once the module resets. I have not encountered a situation where I couldn’t make changes, so not sure about that one.

I've just moved house and encountered this problem for the first time, my problem on the screen is the lcd dots are faint, mainly on the right side and look like they're flashing. If I press any of the F1, F2 buttons the screen is normal. This is likely caused by damp in the room it's stored in. My new house is very damp in certain rooms due to being unoccupied for 5 months. Using a dehumidifier system in the room placed close to the TD12 brain can help resolve this problem. Unfortunately, if your screen is on the way out then replacement is the only solution.
Camilo Barker Official TH-cam Channel No, that is a completely separate issue. A low battery will warn you with "backup battery low." If your screen is dim, you most likely have another issue. I'm assuming you know how to adjust the display brightness? (Holding in KIT button and rotating the wheel)

Drummerboy999 - a couple things to check first, and my apologies if this seems trivial, but just to be sure: Have you attempted to adjust the contrast by holding the kit button in and spending the main dial.? Are you totally sure you have the correct battery? It should be a CR 2032 battery. if it is not this exact battery, it could cause issues. Beyond that, it is very hard to troubleshoot, so hopefully its something simple. one thing that can cause issues is not being grounded when you open it up. this is particularly risky in the winter when the air is very dry with static. I always make sure I am grounded by touching something else to prevent static shocks etc. hopefully it is not that! Let us know how things turn out for you. Good luck!

How do you backup the additional 50 sets when the control module wont let you change anything with the low battery warning.
