I still cannot believe that the wings on those planes are light enough that without bracing they will tear themselves from the plane because of lift forces at 50-80 knots

That’s because they were made pretty much out of paper
i think i also read somewhere that the supports (For some planes) were to create drag to pull the wings more backwards than straight up because wings are a lot stronger horizontally then vertically

@@careyamos485 I am not sure if by that you meant "why he souldn't use them in videos?" or "why weren't they used in ww1?". The answer to the first question is that they just were not used back then, and the reason for that is that parachutes vere heavy and it was impractical to bring them on airplanes, and also it was believed that it would discourage pilots from fighting so hard knowing they can escape via parachute.
