    Man, you saved my life! Bought a 10gal 1-1/2HP Husky thats has an oil leak, has to dismantle it, took pictures but didn’t mark the exact position of the inertia switch! Wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be NC or NO and was trying to adjust it to be open and thought it works the other way! Thank you for making this video!

    Very happy to see the diagnose and work around for proof method. Alot of people ignore what has been given to them for just that reason (i.e. circuit diagrams and common sense use of tools). To often it's the throw a part at it and see method, gets expensive.

    These switches usually goes bad and burn off the contacts inside the motor. some are hard to replace(obsolete), Good troubleshooting video.

    Thank you. This was so helpful to me. My ancient air compressor motor suddenly came to a grinding halt and I never gave a thought to an obstructed belt. After watching your video for a little over a minute I had the old dear running again.

    Very well done. I'm havin the same problem and I am just assuming it's the starting capacitor. Thanks for the heads up on that switch

    Hi there it's a good video, the inertia switch might be called a centrifugal switch....from Fred in UK.

    i've got a 7.5 hp 80 gallon ingersoll that's throwing a breaker on start up part of the time. sometimes it doesn't do this BUT throws a breaker when it's trying to reload. I've had this compressor 10 years or so and it just recently started doing this. any suggestions? thx

    Very good video. You saved me about $400. Mine had a hard time starting so I looked at the capacitors, one had a burn mark on one so I figured that was it. Replaced both capacitors and still had the problem. Finally took it apart because I thought it was now the centrifugal start switch and lo and behold one of the wires fell off so it was not working. Crimped it good and put back on the switch and now works fantastic !!!

    My air compressor has problems starting and then the start capacitor started leaking so I replaced it with another start capacitor of the same value except the old capacitor was rated 165 volts and the new one was rated 125 volts but of the same microfarad rating.When I turned the compressor on with the new capacitor within 30 seconds the new capacitor blasted off like a rocket lol,I guess I cant take it back.Iam wondering if the voltage difference is what caused the problem or if their might be an issue with the compressor blowing start capacitors.The compressor is only wired for 125v.

    wow funny we have the same air compressor it was given to me from my dad when he passed and last night went to go turn it on it turned on but it seemed to sputter a little bit like it lost its power for a second but isnt it a great air compressor?

    I have an 80 gallon stand up IR 7.5 hp compressor. This thing is about 10 years old and we have never had a problem with it. But now when it starts it starts okay but it will not achieve full rpm, I'd guess its running about 50%-70% of full RPM. We can also hear a screeching sound like a bearing issue. We have found the screeching noise is indeed coming from the backside of the electric engine. I think we have 2 problems consisting of a starter capacitor issue and a bearing problem. Other people think its JUST the bearing. What's your opinion?

      cblair0608 I'd hate to hazard a guess without hearing it. One sure way to find out: take it apart and see which parts fall out!

    Hi, How do you connect the wires to a pressure switch when there is no indication which wires go where.🤔

    how do you or would you test the capacitor if needed. I don't have an expensive multimeter with the normal testing function. Can I do it by ohms? Thank You!

    • @MattVerley
      @MattVerley  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you really can't correctly test a capacitor without a specific capacitance tester. However, you can do some basic testing that *might* tell you if it is bad. With the capacitor fully discharged (short across the leads to make sure), it should show a low resistance (ohms) at first, then slowly start to rise. The rate at which it rises depends on the multimeter you are using, the capacitor, and a few other variables. If there is a bleeder resistor across the terminals, this test won't work. You can also charge the capacitor with a DC voltage source (12v battery). It should draw high current at first, then slowly taper off until it is fully charged. It should hold the 12v for a while (unless, again, it has a bleeder resistor).

    can the inertia switch be stuck on and cause the start capacitor to fail?

    • @CoolAirVw
      @CoolAirVw 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stonefisk I found that out after I asked this question. Original one melted down with oil running out and smoking. Replacement one blew up. Luckily it was under the "shield". Scared me to death when it blew, I had to change my shorts. Quick disassembly found a "mud-daubber" nest was on built on the centrifugal inertia switch making it inoperative. I was quite excited when, after I removed them nest and got another capacitor and my super cheap compressor worked. Still use it every day in my shop. This video really helped.

    My compressor will run for maybe 7-10 seconds under load then trip the breaker. When belt taken off, the motor runs loud and then after about 45 second will trip the breaker. Any thoughts?

    I just yesterday, found an air compressor very similar to yours.i believe this one was stored outdoors. It is very rusty & I do not trust the tank (ticking time bomb) mine is 1/2 hp 7.5 gal 100psi 2.8cfm air delivery 1.5@40, 1.2@90, 42@2.8, 34@63. The drain valve is seized. I am considering rebuilding this air compressor possibly with a new tank. Can you please refer me to where to get acurate replacement parts? It's a sears compressor which looks almost exactly like yours but smaller.yours has at least 1 extra option that mine does not! (Where the cylinder head attaches to the tank, yours has a device that looks similar to a radiator & mine does not have it, just a tube that provides air to the tank.)

      @MattVerley my compressors motor has two capacitor boxes, at 11oclock and 2oclock. Each have 3 capacitors that are *hip flask* shaped. It won't start either, how do I go about checking the capacitors?
      Thank you for your videos, gives me the gumption to try to fix it myself.

    2:00....'Peak Horsepower'......right, how do you get 6 'peak' horsepower with only 15 amps at 120 volts....that's 1800 watts or barely 2.4 horse..?

    Why not just check the capacitor

    • @ralfie8801
      @ralfie8801 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ralph Buglio
      Why? He checked the centrifugal switch that puts the capacitor in the circuit. The switch is bad, he put a push button switch in the circuit to activate the capacitor during start up, the compressor runs, so nothing wrong with the capacitor.
