- Getting your first tattoo is a rite of passage. It's something that many of us ponder over for years. And once you go through with it, your body is changed forever and the urge to continue collecting grows. We sat down with Los Angeles based artist Sasha Masiuk and her client Karen to document the process of a first tattoo. Then we caught up with the pair after the ink to hear first hand what the experience was like.

This is the kind of tattoo story that should be more prevalent, IMO. Thought through and mature. Granted, the other types of stories are often entertaining, but I don't think they should represent the primary way people get ink.

I would like to see what this looks like after a couple years. I was always told that every tattoo fads a bit over time. It already looks delicate and not bold, I hope it still looks like it!

I made my mom cry when I showed her my first tattoo. I plan on just getting a bunch when I move out so when she sees me again for the first time, I'm gonna be completely covered.

My dad wasn’t disappointed that I got a tattoo, he was just disappointed that he wasn’t there with me and I did it secretly
Keep in mind that I was 23 by this point, I just think he didn’t want me to regret it. He doesn’t mind now because its just a tiny one on my wrist. I did promise him that he’d get to go with me for my next one.

I have 5 tattoos by 3 different artists, 3 done by the same, the only difference in pain was the placement for me. The most important thing is chemistry with the artist, trust the process and give him/her as much artistic freedom as possible. My favorite ones are the ones where I just pointed out the main subject and few details to incorporate, all the rest was completely up to the artist. My first I went in with a picture and just said "I want this". And it's my less favorite one
It's like getting scratched by a pet.
For hours on end. Literally.
It's that painful, but over time it starts to suck.
I find the worst part is the constant wiping.
That being said, the ditch on my arm sucked, a lot, it felt more intense in that one spot for 10 mins than the rest of my forearm.
I find liner scratches harder than shading, but shading needs to be pounded in, so longer in one area.
@Jaz P so far I've done a 6hr and a 4hr in chair. My next appointment is Friday. See how long we go for. I'm doing a full sleeve, sofar we are only halfway done my forearm lol 1500$ in so far.
I'm with you though, it really starts to suck after 3 hours... I took a break and took 4 Advil and 4 Tylenol, helped for another 3 hours, but hard on the stomache so eat lots.
I got my half sleeve finished up today and that arm ditch hurts so bad. So does the elbow..

Ive done a 6 hour session on my sternum and that sucked all around. Arms and legs werent too bad though
The worst thing is the tattoo flu , never got it before and then yesterday after a 10 hour session now I feel so bad ahah
That is a really pretty tatt, love the slight asymmetry from the flower, yet overall balanced design
I’m still working on my first one, above the knee down to the ankle, wrapped around my leg. I’ve learned a lot about pain tolerance throughout this process!

I probably picked something too big for my first one, took about 14 hours over 3 sessions but I love it and can't wait for my next one in a few weeks
People always ask about first experiences, what about the 3rd time you got tattooed? When was that one session where you truly fell down the rabbit hole and it was the point of no return. Let's of people get one tattoo and stop.

I’m the same as the artist, Ive always gotten stuff I think looks cool, some have a bit of meaning but mostly it’s just stuff I think looks cool, also just giving my artist an idea and letting them do whatever they want. If you have a good artist you should be able to let them do whatever they want and end up with something amazing.
Got my first in july. The latest one is in the back of the neck, not any pain at all tbh

There's the scratching sensation, which is not bad. Then it's the burning sensation, which is not fun. The worst is the lightning like pain, which is the worst.
Tattoo pain really just depends on the person. I have a tattoo on both shins that also touches the ankle, didnt hurt. A stomach tattoo that also went onto the sternum and the edges of my ribs, also didnt hurt. Ive almost fallen asleep getting tattooed
My first is about a week old now, it’s a memorial for my grandparents

I scheduled my first tattoo today and put a down payment down. Can't wait until I can get it done in July.
My first is the only one i have rn but i got it on my left outter calf and it takes up from above the ankle to the top of the calf muscle. Really no pain never moves or tensed up

well pain is dependent on placement and what type of tattoo. This girls opinion on the tattoo pain would be completely different if it was a large american traditional piece on her ribs. Something with thick lines and alot of color packing.

I'm going to guess it's actually the phone that Sasha had out most of the time - it's got a green case and also reflects the green background a little. She's also waving it around, making it harder to mask.
I might be a negative nancy right here! But I kinda want a tattoo but everytime I see a tattoo I find something i dont like... or thats not "perfect".... and it annoyes the shit out of me that im so nitpicky XD! And that scares me of getting at tattoo done
In that case you should not get one. Tattooing skin is difficult and as you can’t erase anything even an amazing artist might have a bad moment so it cannot be guaranteed that there wont be any imperfections. :/

@@a.nastasia.olivia It's very light and uses very fine linework. Bold holds over time. also, the artist doesn't have a healed section on their insta, so it's hard to "prove" that it will heal well when the artist isn't showing off their track record.
