I'm pretty sure Billy drones the G (3rd) string instead of using the D string on 2nd part after the slide up part. That G string is ringing throughout the that entire part. He actually said to a bunch of people in a guitar shop, "what key is the song in?". A light bulb went off in all of our heads. This was years ago. He made playing it look so easy. Super cool and super nice guy.
Oh he is a prince of a guy. Putting up so very patiently with the timid pick-using bass tech trying desperately to replace a thunderous legend in Dusty .. He is very gracious and so masterful love, a solid showman and artist.
Great video! Billy is all about playing in the moment live. Blues is all about playing in the moment...with feel. Make it your own! Improvisation is the absolute best way to become a player with feel. Charts are good. But ears are gooder! This video is great to see and cop techniques and then use them your way. Thanks Rob.
I read an interview with him in the 1980’s. He used the Eagle Claw technique on this song. When he plays the chord with his index finger on the 2nd fret and then slides up a fret, he also has his thumb over the top fretting the same frets on the low E string.

As I've gotten older I've realized no one really cares if you don't play a cover exactly like the original artist does. The most famous most of us get is playing bars in front of friends and family. There are probably a lot of songs I play wrong, but as long as people are being entertained it doesn't really matter. Thank you for showing me the correct way to play this riff. I have been playing it with the 'F' shaped triad for a couple years at least. It really does sound spot on to tune the high E down to D. Thanks again!
I saw ZZ Top twice. i saw them in 1983 or 84 touring the Eliminator album at the Omni Arena in Atlanta. I still remember the crowd cheering Cheap Sunglasses. I didn't realize he was using those open strings for the beginning. Sounds really cool. I always played it just using the root. You really don't have to tune down your high E though if you want to play it lower on the neck. Just play the Triad on the D G & B strings. Although obviously it would sound a little different with the F an octave lower
Maybe double flat? Might be using wrong terms; we used to call it traverse in combining pluck and pick. Lemon Song my go to example. Great show, sweet as molasses, thanks for the lesson.

I've seen dozens of videos where billy plays this at the 3rd fret in standard tuning. I know because he then plays several more songs without taking anytime to tune. I suspect in his old age he said why bother the audience doesn't know the difference. It's also possible he just avoids the high E string and gets that F note on the D string .
He Play's It Anyway He Want's !!! I Suppose Being In The Studio and Recording He Has Certain Guitar's Tuned Differently For A Full Sound But LIVE A Different Story !!!
Right. When the Boyzz (R.I.P. Dusty Hill) play this tune live, BFG doesn’t play the recorded version of the riff, opting instead to play a facsimile of the riff down at the third fret. Billy doesn’t detune his high ‘E’ down to “D,” and he doesn’t change guitars when “Cheap sunglasses” is on the set list. Also different when this tune is played live is the little lick at the end of the chorus played through the ring modulator.

There is actually a Fender Rhoads or Wurlitzer playing that riff at the same time. It's what you hear on the little short stops in the song and the whoo whoo part.
I think in the original recording Billy plays that like, starting from 4th on D, 6th on G, and 5th on B, and then slides up half step.
