The Wii Speak was a microphone accessory but not many people had one, which would make the call part essentially useless unless someone had it already plugged it and setup and calibrated, and The Wii remote simply doesn't have a microphone. The call relying on internet also follows the circumstance that WiFi is set up in the first place.

@@commscan314this is an 9 month year old comment by got to say something Nintendo actually did push up some updates that did patch ios's and replaced ios's that helped with USB loading with ones that do not do USB loading yes basically it did prevent stuff but basically it made it more of a hassle so they would have to repatch those ios's which was pretty easy but it still was frustrating
