My older brother made my fan for my outfit in 2016 when I started dancing traditional. He passed away recently. In native culture, I’m cree, we don’t have cousins, we have siblings and moms and dads. Our aunties are our moms and our uncles are our dads. I have 7 aunties and 2 uncles so I have 8 moms and 3 dads.
Oh and what you said about the amount of cones, I was taught that a child's dress has about 150 cones and a adult dress has 365, to represent the year and each cone has a prayer/blessing on it
That's the modern version of the story. One of the family members of the originators of the jingle dance, said that he didn't know where that started. A woman can put as many as she likes. What feels right for her and her story
@@katnorris6258 Yes, I have heard elders used to tell future jingle dress dancers say "put enough jingles on to make a good sound" . If you think about it too, the amount of days are a colonial construct. I don't know, different strokes for different folks though. The teaching of 365 jingles is still a beautiful tradition to follow 😊✨
Was alot work to a dress, i was always interested in the Indian way of life ,alot to learn and appeicat and respect , this is the American history keep it in your hearts
I have eastern cherokee on both sides, I just never grew up on a Rez due to colonization and my dad was afraid I would become a mmiw on the Rez. Could someone please tell me if eastern cherokee woman dance jingle too? I want to make one, even though I don’t live on a Rez I’d like to still take part if that’s okay! I honestly don’t know because my grandfather who grew up on the Rez died before I was born.. please someone help me 🥺
looking below, and also with experience their is always a meaning for numbers in the native culture, which i love, but having Navajo (dine') kids and not being native at all i found this pretty informative, i might call my mother in law for clarification on the number of jingles but i love it! but other than the jingle dress what other accessories are they to have, i know they have a hair piece, and a fan, where or how do i make one, and where or how do i have it blessed, i believe natives are the closest beings to the spiritual world.
+itsdeegee Welp, I hope you got a good grade. You made everything look so easy, neat video. Maybe you could do a video on "how to make tobacco lid jingles " I've been wanting to make my own.
+spinnerettetee Hello! Pliers, I get it, but they have a lip. Are they cut off or flattened? If cut, what about sharp edges? I wish someone would create a video on this topic.
These are not all the same teachings I was given when I started jingle dancing, both my aunties are old style jingle dress dancers and some of the teachings in this video are not totally accurate,
These are just some of the things they researched. There is many stories and information that we didn't include because we had a certain time limit for the video. So you could have for sure had different teachings. I just spoke on one out of the many.
I just wanted to share those teachings that I felt were missed, I'm part Ojibwa so I felt it was my responsibility to share what I was told, plus I'm a two spirit jingle dress dancer as well, oh and I was also taught that you don't just give any dancer a jingle dress, they must earn the right to wear it
Listening to the music just makes me so happy and I just want to get up and dance
Kalee Belcourt same! I can’t wait for my jingle dress to be done. I found this video to use as a reference.
Beautiful, thank you my sisters for the very informative video. Gonna make one for my daughter. A'ho!
Love that you have driving me crazy as the background music!

Cool video girls!! Inspired to make my own :)
I think that they had to hear the lids to make them easier to shape like you would fit a horseshoe to make it fit the hooves
