You could also punch vent holes in the sides of small lunch paper bags and put each bunch into one of the bags before hanging it on the line. The bag will catch any leaves or stems that may fall as the herbs dry and that will allow you to write the name of the herb on each bag. Save the bags too as they can be reused year after year!
This is a very cool idea. Could use cheesecloth/mesh bags also, with label on it. Then to get herbs off the stems, just scrunch the bag over a bowl to catch tiny bits that fall through. Empty bag & voila!
Sarah, that was an awesome video! If you ever gave up homesteading(NOT THAT YOU EVER WILL), You could be a live broadcaster for a news channel. You had my full attention through the whole video. I learned a bunch today. Thank you for all that you do for the community. Loved it!
Thank you!! The wormwood I bought is too small to play around with to hang so I used your method but put a wire rack on a paper towel lined cookie sheet. Fingers crossed.
I love your idea of hanging with the rubber bands and clothes pins! I hang my herbs to dry also but have always used kitchen twine to hang with. My husband is a rural mail carrier so we have rubber bands coming out our ears. Trying it this way this year!
I love the herbs as room decoration while drying! I'm going to put hubby on that one. :) He made me a flat drying rack which is basically a wood frame with screen stretched across it so that air circulates above and below the herbs. I confess I use my electric dehydrator quite a bit also especially in spring when the "weeds" are plentiful. I dry for us and the rabbits so I put away as much as possible.
I use my dehydrator for garden veggies and stuff. I do really like the look of the drying herbs as home decor. It kinda matches my personality. 😊 I also like that hanging them on the walls doesn't take up shelf space, etc. Thanks for watching!
Loved seeing all the herbs. Bet it makes that room smell fantastic. I was going to say write the names on the clothes pins too, but looks like a lot of people beat me to it. lol
Have you every strung green beans and dried them that way? They are called Leather Britches. Give it a try. That is an old Appalachian way of preserving. Yum
For those battling humidity, I have nothing but humidity here in Alabama! Put your herbs on a cookie sheet and put them in the dashboard of your car. (I got this idea from An American Homestead, and it works!)
Michele Warren in Oklahoma we do the paperbag in the car too! Just be sure to label the bag! (Side note: On really hot days we can even bake cookies on the dash!) If we hang bundles in the house I got some wedding veil type material to make a "bag" around the bundle to catch any leaves that fall off. Just cut the material big enough to enclose the bundle & wrap twin or rubberband around the top (the stems) add the labeled clothespin and hang.
Was thinking that Virginia here, we drink our air... wondering if a clear plastic air rated hoop house would do? Might be a steam bath, maybe pallet smoke house...
I live in a very dusty area...so instead of using uncovered platters...I put small herbs in net bags( like you get for delicates in the washing machine) and hang on drying line like you. I've even put lettuce tops that have gone to seed into them...and they don't fall away.
In my area in Virginia sage and rosemary are perennials which is great because fresh herbs aren’t as sharp flavored. Fresh sage used in stuffing/dressing tastes so much better than dried.
I agree wirh labeling cause mine got mixed up last year. Lol. I tied clumps with cheap natural twine. I hung in garage then off old metal hangers away from wall so they dried fast. I like your close pin idea. I just used cheap natural twine then cut it off and pitched it. I tell you your own dried or fresh herbs make all the difference in food flavor. I feel good that it is all natural as well. Look forward to learning mote about your herbs and edibles. Thanks from southeast Mo!
You explained very easy simple ways to drying herbs. I appreciate that cause I'm New at this. Seems the store bought tastes like dried filthy weeds. Thx you encouraged me. God bless everything you do and your Kevin.
Beautiful herb drying line! Who needs decorations when you can dry herbs on the wall? We're still trying to find a good way to dry herbs off grid, not because of the lack of electricity, but because of the high humidity. The best way we have found so far is to put them in paper bags and hang the bags. Some herbs still don't dry very well. We would love to build an herb drying cabinet that we could put moisture absorbing rocks in and/or use little solar fans to dry the air inside a bit. Someday . . . Thanks for sharing another fun video! - Carrie
+Kip Smyth Wow, Carrie! I wish I had a solution for you guys. I also dry herbs, flowers and comfrey in our barn and guest cabin in the same manner. Neither of them have electricity or AC. I've been able to do well in both areas. It's too bad you guys have such a battle with humidity.
build or buy a metal barrel wood stove and make a dehydrator on top of it, this is the best way to control dehydrating. I have a sheet of how to construct the dehydrator but don't know how to attach it here.
I am going to try labeling and clipping the herb bundles to a clothes drying rack next to our kitchen wood stove on the fire box side. Will try draping cheese cloth over the top to keep out dust and anything thing else floating around the wood stove, like ash. Hope I can keepthe cats out! Or may need to revert to your higher wall drying line. Thanks for this video Sarah!
Thank you for the great video! Thought Kevin would be at the end of the video with Sage under his arm pits saying, “I wonder why Sarah thinks sage smells like arm pits.” Lol
THIS was a big help!!! I was just jumping around cutting this and that and not really sure how to dry it naturally. It was a big mess. Appreciate you showing how to dry various herbs...some on the tray and some hanging. Also no sun...I had it backwards. And labels...lol.... for sure. When you bring your herbs in for the winter....about how cold a temp can they tolerate? Thanks a million...you guys are great with video content and with your camera work. Jesus bless.
I just got done drying basil and I swished them in a bowl of water and ran cold water over them, per directions from other people and I still found tiny bugs that kind of resembled a slugs, about 1/8th of an inch long. Also a couple of earwigs that both got through the bath, which surprised me. I must admit my plant was starting to sprout flowers, so it was aging. This is my first time growing this, so I am trying to figure it out!
I m starting a herb garden for next year it's small and I got some herbs from SAFEWAY STORE AND start some plants love it I replanted tia basil ,sage, from the food store put it in water and I have roots . I'm looking for pineapple sage but haven't found it in the food stores yet.i have also got dry beans from the food store and I now have LIMA BEANS black eye peas and lack beans growing for my chili that I make.
I use sage for a cold I drop a bunch in a bowl and pour hot water over it and with a towel over my head steam my face and breathe in those vapors. Great for my hay allergy too.
>>> I am so happy, that you are so real saying how you messed up for not labeling them because I do too !!! I'm always saying, " darn , I need to do this better and put some label" I think that I will remember like so many people here on you tube but , lets face it , age has caught up with me LOL !
Can we dry mustard, kale and other greens this way? By the way, we just got our landscape fabric and irrigation system from grower's solutions from your link. We're in East Texas and needed to have a garden to depend on without fighting weeds. Husband is transplant recipient and I'm dealing with arthritis and fibromyalgia. But, praise Jesus we found you and love and appreciate your vlogs. You are both so intelligent and present very well. Could tell that you were educated and smart, too. 😉
😅I enjoy watching your videos so much. I also lived in Arizona, (Apache junction)I can't believe you succeeded in homesteading there, my hat is of to you.
I dried a lot of basil in the house one year and the kids complained all the time about the strong smell, lol. So I guess for the basil I'm going to have to come up with another area to to dry. Even rosemary can be really strong. I loved the smell but I love my herb babies.
That works or a layer or 2 of cheesecloth. Sometimes we make a little sack out of cheesecloth with herbs or peppers inside and hang that up to dry or set it on a pie tin or cookie cooling rack.
You should have hubby make you a small screen shelf cabinet for drying your delicate stuff like thyme. They work great. Pinterest has some nice designs made from pallets, so it wouldnt cost for wood.
I dry my herbs in the microwave with paper towels , short times til feel they are dry. Your sage doesn't need replanted as it should come up again for many years. Many mint plants are squared stemmed and can take over the garden and are extremely difficult to get rid of it. I would suggest planting in a container. Only exception is basel as it's too cold to regrow in cold weather as well as rosemary.
just a suggestion' write your herb name on your clothes pin. also i dry some herbs in a paper bag, just pin the bag to your line and lanel the bag. i also dry seeds in the bags
Even easier way to hang them is to tie them up so that the string goes from bundle to the other - so you get the pairs of bundles - then hang them by throwing one of the bundles over the thing you hang them on. That's the way we do it in Europe.
Sarah you need to try Sage & Onion Stuffing with your Turkeys, your Chickens & I bet it's go with even your Rabbits. It's good stuffed IN the birds but if you mix the Sage, Onion & Dried Breadcrumbs with Sausage Meat and roll it into balls, then it is simply divine!! No Armpit aromas in the entire State, never mind the kitchen. Give it a go. I do that labelling thing wrong too. I have great intentions then I run out of time & think I'll remember then I look at a jar or a freezer bag and have no clue what it is. Like opening tins with no label, you expect Soup but get Peach Slices, lol.
This video is already over a year old now. I was wondering if you ever decided to write the name of the herb on the clothes pins, before hang-drying them or not?
I would love to be able to forage. I'm always out in the woods fishing or filming and I probably step right over some nice treasures. Most botanists have spent their whole lives learning I'd say. As for me, I can barely identify poison ivy. lol
i am wondering if the oils from herbs leave a stain on the wall ? Would the herbs dry out if just put in an open jar? Then when the herbs are dry, seal up with lid and you could also label the jars as what is what.
I have dried herbs in court jars from 6 plus years ago I received for my mom when she passed. They're dry and still smell good. My question is are they still good?

The clothes pin hack is wonderful❤ thank you so much❤
What if you write the names of the herbs on the clothes pin you can reuse them time after time.
I might try that!
I love that idea.
Do you rinse them off frist?
That is exactly what I do!
That was exactly what I was gonna suggest. It just makes all the sense in the world to me.
Sarah, that was an awesome video! If you ever gave up homesteading(NOT THAT YOU EVER WILL), You could be a live broadcaster for a news channel. You had my full attention through the whole video. I learned a bunch today. Thank you for all that you do for the community. Loved it!
I cut my lemon balm, peppermint, rosemary and basil today for the first time! Made some delicious fresh lemon balm peppermint tea too!
Pam says- fresh sage is great for adding to veggy and bone broths. It can reduce the gaseous effects of bean dishes and smothered okra as well.
Love this video. The room looks so nice with the herbs hanging in there. Learned some helpful things and Im in harvest mode right now, perfect timing.

Great job guys !! Great way of drying your herbs off grid just like they've been doing for hundreds of years !! thanks for sharing
Have you every strung green beans and dried them that way? They are called Leather Britches. Give it a try. That is an old Appalachian way of preserving. Yum
I dry my peppers like this as well using fishing line strung thru the stems and hung up. (cayenne and other thin wall peppers)
MrWaco63 that’s a cool idea
I love the drying setup. It is quite the decorative piece!
Oh finally I found a great video on drying herbs- Thankyou & well done Kevin the drying line is just magic.
Hi from Australia! I just planted more herbs today, then came online and found your inspirational video - thanks!
Awesome. I have a stair way wall no direct light. Thank you❤️💯🎉
Thanks for video was looking for a good video on drying herbs thanks

Was thinking that Virginia here, we drink our air... wondering if a clear plastic air rated hoop house would do? Might be a steam bath, maybe pallet smoke house...
Excellent tip
😳 Awesome!
I think that is a great idea! But, how would I cover it from bugs or insects if any get in my car??
Was looking for a way to dry my herbs with out using electricity this is a great idea . Thanks for the info.
What a neat way to line dry herbs! It makes a pretty display. I have Jute cord and will try to make myself one
I live in a very dusty area...so instead of using uncovered platters...I put small herbs in net bags( like you get for delicates in the washing machine) and hang on drying line like you. I've even put lettuce tops that have gone to seed into them...and they don't fall away.

We live down in a "bowl" and on a year round creek. We love where we live, but the humidity is challenging.

I use a basket tray to dry my herbs. Air can flow to the bottom of the pile Drys faster than a platter.
She's cute! Kev's a lucky boy! Good video too!
I am going to try labeling and clipping the herb bundles to a clothes drying rack next to our kitchen wood stove on the fire box side. What an adorable video! Thanks for the info!
Cool video! I enjoyed the look of your drying rack. It is simple enough I could add that to our home this week! Stay safe.
Fantastic! I hope it works well for you.
Love your cast iron! I have 2 cast iron pans, love them however wish I had one of every size, shape, ounce etc... Lol
Bahaha! So sage smells like arm pits! Fun video
Simple is good! Love your drying line. I have 2 just like them. Great job!
Thanks so much!

Thank you. I would make reusable tags to hang in the clothes pins. But most likely I would just use my dehydrator.
I cook chicken hearts in butter with lots of sage we love it
I use sage for a cold I drop a bunch in a bowl and pour hot water over it and with a towel over my head steam my face and breathe in those vapors. Great for my hay allergy too.

What about labeling your cloths pins to identify the herbs
Thank you so much for this video. Just what I needed. I can't wait to dry my own herbs.
Always love drying herbs
Can we dry mustard, kale and other greens this way? By the way, we just got our landscape fabric and irrigation system from grower's solutions from your link. Hi Sarah maybe wright on your pegs what the herbs are and they you have them ready to go xx
I dried a lot of basil in the house one year and the kids complained all the time about the strong smell, lol. So I guess for the basil I'm going to have to come up with another area to to dry. Even rosemary can be really strong. I loved the smell but I love my herb babies.
Love your ideas. Plater drying I may try covering with this Muslim cloth to keep dust off any herbs I may eat

best video i have seen for a long time. I always must laugh if i see people washing like crazy their herbs. 😉😂
Great info!
Love this idea. Thank you!
Loved the video. Thank you for the advice.

Love the clothesline idea. I'm going to do that in my laundry area.
Nice dried herbs with a thin coating of house dust from hanging.
Love sage dressing with roasted Turkey 🦃
Thanks for another great video. God bless!
Great tips
I use old screens I get for free to dry flowers or herbs that are not good for hanging.
Why not use the mesh bags that fruit comes in to hold the thyme and still use the clothes pin method. Just a thought.
Sage is great for a sore throat! I make tea with it.
A window screen for the ones you lay out might work, too.
Love the tips!
also have you done a video on foraging?
Can I dry green peas this way?
Loved this, thank you
This is how I was taught to dry herbs and flowers lol I never would have thought to use a dehydrator for them.
How do you store them? Just leave them hanging? What about Basil? Thanks.
How about color coding or labeling the clips?
So do you take them and put them in glass jars when dry? or will that make mold if they are not dry all the way-?
just a suggestion' write your herb name on your clothes pin. also i dry some herbs in a paper bag, just pin the bag to your line and lanel the bag. i also dry seeds in the bags
Can you show us some of your seed saving? I have no idea where from the plant they come from.
so when drying avoid a room with direct sunlight? Or should the room be dark?
Even easier way to hang them is to tie them up so that the string goes from bundle to the other - so you get the pairs of bundles - then hang them by throwing one of the bundles over the thing you hang them on.
That's the way we do it in Europe.
Can you harvest coffe bean in homestead
I definitely don’t believe in the ‘cleansing sage smudge’ thing, but I must say that burnt sage smells amazing.
Dumb question.. how long does it take for basil to dry with this method? Just tried this method starting yesterday.
Sarah you need to try Sage & Onion Stuffing with your Turkeys, your Chickens & I bet it's go with even your Rabbits. Lol! I am only beginning to learn. 😊
So I'm not hopeless after all. Do you have any foraging videos? If not do you have any plans to do any?
Why should they not get sunshine?
How about making shucky beans, or leather britches?
i wonder if this would work in my green house
How long does it usually take for the herbs to dry??
i am wondering if the oils from herbs leave a stain on the wall ? Would the herbs dry out if just put in an open jar? Then when the herbs are dry, seal up with lid and you could also label the jars as what is what.
Write on the clothespins what herb is..
I have dried herbs in court jars from 6 plus years ago I received for my mom when she passed. They're dry and still smell good. My question is are they still good?
If not moldy, I would use them.
Do you grind them or leave whole after drying?
So once they are dried do you then put them in a jar? If so, how long will they keep? Thank you! 👍😘🙏🇬🇧
Learn to grow channel puts them in a mason jar with tight lid, cool dark area, and says 1-3 years. Will be harvesting some soon and trying.
