- Lake Ohrid is the largest and most beautiful of North Macedonia's three tectonic lakes. It is about 30 kilometres long and around 288 meters deep. The lake is filled with water from three rivers, and most of its water comes from Prespa, which spills its water down to Ohrid through mountain springs. Ohrid is one of Europe's fabulous biological reserves, with unique flora and fauna, including two types of the Ohrid trout: eel and bleak. The lake is of worldwide importance, with more than 200 endemic species, and was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1979. It is on the mountainous border between southwestern Macedonia and eastern Albania, with Pogradec in Albania and Ohrid and Struga in North Macedonia at the lakeside.
