    Very very clear video you omitted to use loctite on the caliper bolts - so important 👍

    • @GarageKing
      @GarageKing 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, thanks for the kind words. It certainly can't hurt to use loctite, but there are mixed opinions on using it. I have personally done thousands of brake jobs in the dealership and never used it in the many years I was employed at a dealer, so for me its just a habit not to use it, but it won't hurt anything if you use it. Good catch on the vid, you obviously were watching the details!!!!

      Thanks for the comment brother !!! You actually have low mileage for the year you have !!! I find with brakes, even in the saltier states the brake bolts come out ok. MB uses good steel on their bolts and I find they don't rust as much as the Japanese brands. This might be late but I changed pads but not the sensor on a 2015 GL 450 front, is there a way to clear the brake pad lights or do I need to get the sensor replaced. It was removed without issue. Thanks.
    NM: based on other comments if the light is still on then I need to replace the sensors. Thanks.

    • @GarageKing
      @GarageKing 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds good !!! The sensor must have contacted the rotor, even if it was taken out without incident, if it contacted the rotor it has to be replaced. I tell people if the light was on before you did the brakes, get a new sensor. If you replace the pads and no light was on (maybe caught it at an oil change) then the sensor can be re-used if it comes out ok. Happy Sat to you :)

    • @GarageKing
      @GarageKing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, thanks for the comment. The brake light is triggered by the sensor in the brake pad. The "reset" is only to retract the caliper piston so the new pads can fit in. The buttons on the steering wheel only move the caliper piston, they don't make the light go out. Make sure you replace the sensor or the light will stay on :)

    Why not change rotors at same time? I'm guessing they were within spec/thickness?

    • @GarageKing
      @GarageKing ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there, you know if this was a Japanese vehicle I would have done so, but I find that on German vehicles the rotor quality is much better (it’s a different steel) and they don’t rust as much, or have thickness variations that cause a pulsating pedal. Plus they do cost quite a bit compare to “regular” cars. This vehicle was in spec and braked fine so it only needed pads. Thanks for the comment :)

    no need to torque wrench the bolts?

    • @GarageKing
      @GarageKing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The smaller bolts, the 13mm that secure the caliper to the caliper bracket are usually between 25-35 Nm for pretty much all cars. As I did not replace the rotors, I did not have to worry about the big bolts that secure the caliper bracket to the spindle. The big bolts that hold the caliper bracket to the suspension are much higher, they vary A LOT between cars, and I have seen them between 80Nm and 270Nm, so they go tight. Some are torque to yield, and some are not. I use a 13mm open end wrench for the small bolts (as the size of the wrench limits how much torque you can apply for the wrench, and a 1/2" bar for the big bolts nice and snug is what I do) Make sure to only tighten by HAND, so don't use an impact. I did look on line for you but could not find anything definitive. If this is your first time doing brakes you could call a MB dealer to get the toque specs if you are not comfortable. Sorry I could not be more help......

    Do you need to put in a new Brake Sensor after every Brake pad change?

    • @GarageKing
      @GarageKing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Dan thanks for the comment. It is good practice to replace them every time as they can crack over time. If your in the boat and in the middle of a job you can reuse it providing that there is no wear on it (your brake light should have never come on). The sensor plastic begins to wear before your light comes on and eventually the plastic is gone and the steel wire is exposed. That touches your brake rotor and triggers the light. Also if you are going to try to reuse the old one be careful removing it. Good luck with the job :)

    • @GarageKing
      @GarageKing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey buddy, thanks for the comment. If you have not bought the parts you could see if you can pop the sensor out, sometimes you can reuse them. If the brake light is on THEN REPLACE IT. They are pretty cheap at about 10 bucks so its good practice to replace them as they can crack and then short out which causes the light to come on when it should not. Basically if its in good shape with no cracks then you can reuse, but if the light is on, or there is any question then just replace. To be honest for what its worth, it is good practice to just replace it if you can. Any other questions just let me know :)

      No you don't have to. If your car has a lot of miles it would not be a bad idea to do the retract procedure, then open the bleeder valve and push the piston back in, this way any dirty brake fluid will go out the bleeder. That would be optimal, but to answer your question, you don't have to.

      Thanks for the comment and you have a good eye brother. The small 13mm bolts are pretty much 25-35NM on all cars regardless of make (unless they are TTY) so I never use a torque wrench as I have done so many it’s just by feel. I should probably put up some text or mention about torque during the vid. Good catch there!!! It’s the big bolts you really have to watch. Some of those bolts are not even reusable depending on the car. Because I never removed the rotors I didn’t have to worry about those big bolts. The loctite definitely won’t hurt anything and can actually protect the threads from corrosion. Good catch and hope you are enjoying your weekend :)
