So my definition of a sport (that I get heat for) is that it is a competition where my goal and the goal of my opponent are at odds with each other. I am trying to accomplish something and they are actively trying to prevent me from accomplishing it. So baseball, basketball, hockey, etc are all sports. You’re on the field at the same time and my performance is linked directly to the other competitors on the field. Golf, CrossFit, track & field, swimming are all athletic competitions but they are not sports. We have the same objective and we can’t directly impact someone else’s ability to achieve the objective. The trick is explaining that it doesn’t make them “worse” than sports, they’re just different.
Running is an activity, but racing is definitely a sport. Also racing via running is the original sport. Hunting was for food out of necessity not competition until more recently.
Rich is right as well. Strength is moving the heaviest weight you can. Power is moving it quickly. The bike over months makes you more efficient. But not stronger or more power. If you want more power for the bike you need to work power on its on and improve efficiency on the bike.
Youu in can get better at hitting a golf ball and hit it farther without getting more powerful. You can get more powerful and then hit a ball farther. But the most powerful guy might not be as efficient as the best swinger and the little lighter person would hit the ball farther.
Golf is not a sport?!?! Are you kidding me?! It 100% is! I was a D1 athlete on scholarship. Sports can be done as activities. Like crossfit in a box is an activity but crossfit at the games is a sport. Weightlifting at the gym = activity. Weightlifting at olympics = sport.
Strength = the PRODUCTIVE application of force. Improving technique is getting stronger.
