I hope using both mic at the same time gets to the hero 9 on software updates. I spent more than the cost of the GoPro to get media mod an a decent mic just because the media mod on models before Hero 12 is useless for vlogging when interacting with people. Something that I think can be corrected via software. I have been using using Gopro for more than 10 years and I think this is going to be my last.
@GoPro too bad we can't get the media mod to work consistently on the Hero 10 and others. A known issue that the media mod keeps getting not recognized and the external microphone attached by 3.5 works...until it doesn't. Frustrating.
@@madeiraislander I gave up with GoPro. I got the Pocket 3 and its impressive. If I get another action cam I will go to DJI because my mic is compatible without using any adapter and its cheaper too!
Being a media mod fanboy and seeing as that I film outside 100% of the time.. this boost in sound quality is the type of thing that makes me want to upgrade.
Or..... spend $25 on a Saramonic SR-XM1 and park it in the Media Mod that you already have. I seriously suggest trying that if audio is your only gripe.
@craigshandworld When I use the media mod I get pretty close to the mic so I dont know the range. In January I got the Hollyland Lark M2 wireless mics. They sound incredible and have a range of like 100 yards I think.
YES!!! I hardly use the Media mod because of the sound and only 1 microphone work at a time. This is a game changer for this mod being able to use both mics at the same time and it sounds so much better
Wow. I have the Hero 10 and I haven't really wanted to upgrade AT ALL until this video. And I've been watching a lot of videos. I don't think I will but this is the first feature that tempts me because the Media Mod mic now sounds usable and it does a good job recording from both behind or in front of the camera which makes it even that much easier to use as a vlogging cam.
The 12 was MUCH clearer on good speakers especially in the low register. you can really hear the tone of his voice and not just the nasal qualities that poorer microphones capture
So the problem with the media mod is that your mounting options dwindle significantly, especially if you want to attach to any kind of tripod. The clearance on the bottom diminishes significantly, and some attachments just don't have a long enough thread. Even trying to attach using the "fingers" is more problematic, since a lot of attachment bolts are too wide to fit under the mod. Gopro definitely missed the boat during the design review for the media mod.
Man I just bought a used hero 5 which is like crazy cool for me because I’ve never had anything like it before, and I thought it had a lot of features, well you guys are really showing me up with this the 11s, 12s, and 13s.
I have all the GoPros up through GP12. Got the Insta360 X$, and switching to the Ace Pro / Pro 2. Just a better overall camera, but they still need a few tweaks such as a better munt.
Merci from France for this Test, very Helpful, by the way there is any new rode micro 2 ways ? I am still looking for it, I do prefer external mic on go pro quality sound. is better, but not too bad with media mod ;)
With the front and rear mics, this seems like a no-brainer for someone like me who primarily wears it on the head and talks from behind it. Nice video!
Guess I would be considered “old school” since I’m still using the 9, 8 as a back up. Bought them new so have had them for a good while. Going to up grade to the 12.
The 11 definitely has more highs with earbuds on. I threw on my noise canceling over ear headphones next, similar quality, the highs are more crisp on the 11. The 12 has more bass to the sound. Voice clarity is definitely better on the 11, the 12 sounds sorta "muddy". Neither one is bad. I wouldnt upgrade over the built in sound via media mod. The front rear feature is nice, I have a feeling they could offer that in a firmware update.
Can you connect a mini lavalier microphone to GoPro 12 by using just the new Bluetooth connection without using the media mod? If yes what should I look for in the microphone before I buy it so I make sure it will work with GoPro 12 . Thank you
Hi, Im hearing using ATH-M50XBT, GP12 sounds quite toned down and GP11 is louder. GP should enable the firmware for GP11 to enable media mod mic front+back
That is a great hypothesis, but fortunately it isn't the case - the media mod on previous versions sounds really boxy, low bass, not as rich, not as clear, not as natural - it sounds and feels cheap It was/is the reason I never ''upgraded'' to those versions, the sound quality was really not good enough - the media mod on GoPro Hero ≤11 sounds super super cheap, as heard in this video If you watch/listen to other reviews of the Media Mod on GoPro Hero ≤11, it'll sound the same even without the body of a camera next to it
my gopro 11 crashes all the time with media mod and its a hassle unscrewing, removing battery, insert battery again, mounting frame again to get it working :( Wish it worked better 🤷♂
my hero 9 black and 10 black crashed as well with the media mod and froze so the only way to make it work again is as you said to remove the battery which is a hassle. gotta test it on the hero 12. possibly it could also be due to the older classic batteries. I'll have to try with the enduro one.
nice to finally offer something we asked at the very start for a front & rear, but hacking the mics is another option that us older gopro'ers do not have due to not creating today but maybe tomorrow the firmware. I stick to a DJI they took away Omni-directional Mic option and sayings its a FOV, play games with the Consumer, We walk IMHO!
I hope this comes on a software update... I do have a dji mi, but I prefer the simplicity of using only the media mod if both mics works at the same time.
Hi Danny, thank you so much for this amazing video as always! For my travels it's essential for me to use GoPro's for my videos. Could you do a video comparing the GoPro Hero 12 to the 9? I own both the 9 & 10 and I'm no sure if its worth upgrading. Not very happy with the colours on my 9. Thank you in advance
Kinda surprised it sounds as good as it does - at least on the 12.. Woulda liked to see a test with a mic plugged in, but understandably that's a whole other video probably.
Are you using 2 different media mods? I bought one but the camera automatically set it up and it's on 'standard mic' Not sure how to change it or where? Can't tap on it or anything..
The 11 sounds better to me. I'm currently running a Hero 10 and I've gotten VERY frustrated with the Media Mod. It ha been replaced twice already although I did not believe the hardware was the problem. Randomly, at least it seems, the external microphone stops working. Works fine for weeks and then, surprise, although installed like always I will lose hours of footage. So frustrating. Was wondering if maybe they actually fixed this in newer cameras while the rest of us get ignored.
How can i connect my hero 12 to my tv which has hdmi and usb? If i Connect it via usb-c (gopro) to usb(tv) the tv recognizes the camera and charges it but its not able to play the media on the camera, since the tv finds no playable data. Thanks a lot :)
would you think there is really no way to add the front+rear mic option in the previous media mod. Is it hardware related or just software they want to hide to force a new purchase?
the media mod is the same that came out a few years ago since the hero 9 black. i just noticed that on the hero 12 black you can enable both front and back mics at the same time, while on the previous hero 10 and 9 you had to choose, front, back or camera internal mics. so it's not an issue of adding this feature to the media mod itself but to the firmware of previous gopro models.
The hardware is the same on the media mod, I tested on a hero 11 and a hero 12 (the extra option doesn't show on the 11). If they add this to the hero 9,10,11 I will be happy forever...
It is software-related - I feel it could be possible up to the GoPro Hero 11 as it is the first GoPro using the GP2 Processor _(like the GH12)_ , but I do not think it would be possible to upgrade on GP1 processor cameras without impacting general performance, overheating and such
