This is an archetypal Canadian/American song. However as with all great music it can transcend time and space. Several years ago I left Scotland to do some travelling in America. Travelling on the train from Louisiana through Texas I ended up in El Paso in a bar called Sassy's on East Missouri St. I met a couple of chaps (one from Houston, and one from New York) and we got chatting, and to cut a long story short we all got very, very drunk on Tequila and beer with me doing impressions of Mr Scott from Star Trek (ah cannae git anymere oot of her Captain). The link to the song was there were some other chaps in the bar who were Vietnam Vets and one of them put this song on and we all sang along, well sort of.😅😅😅 One of those nights that burn themselves into your memory. That was nearly twenty five years ago. But I am happy to say that there survives a memento of that night. To this day in Scotland a very threadbare washed out T shirt from Sassy's bar in El Paso, Texas survives, but seldom gets worn for fear of it falling apart.

@@susieq8924 You are so right about the T shirt. Through the drunken haze at the end of that night as we all said our goodbyes somebody said let us exchange addresses and keep in touch. A noble sentiment. I recall, vaguely, saying it would never happen. So I think the chap from New York hit on the idea of us all buying a T shirt as a memento. I am happy to say it worked.

@@psleep4255Yes the people were different back then, more down to earth and genuine. People are different today, very self centered, Machiavellian, the selfie generation. The 1960’s as a pre teen I remember every day news radio would give the count of how many American soldiers were killed and wounded in Viet Nam, often saw on tv news reports about unrest in Northern Ireland, and Israel. I remember MLK marching in my hometown and the neighbor across the street sitting on his porch with his shotgun just in case anything kicked off. Crazy stuff to have to see growing up. Things settled down in the 70’s and 80’s and it was generally a happy time. Unfortunately the left and satanists are rising up and are causing turmoil in the world again much like it was in the late 60’s.

Heard this song for the first time in 1968 on WBUS an underground radio station in Miami. It got famous in Easy Rider. Played that album for years and lost it in my first divorce. Man I miss that album :).

"The Weight" has some of the best words ever put to music. I've heard more then once that Cathy Smith, ala John Belushi's fatal drug needle partner and Gordon Lightfoot's ex mistress, is mentioned as the one walking side by side with Carmen who ended up sticking around.

Well it's now officially a piece of Americana about a small southern town. It's kinda weird it was written by a Canadian perhaps, but otherwise, I and a lot of others keep listening to it as though it's still a top 40 or whatever.

I've two things to day about The Weight. I've performed this song quite a few time, always outside the USofA and it resonates with every audience. Deeply. Second, I've never, in my mind, envisioned pulling into Nazareth in an Oldsmobile. Or any automobile. More like pulling in on foot, or getting off a wagon. Not to criticize. I'm now reconsidering how I interpret the song. So maybe I do pull in to Nazareth in my old Chevy II.
