Didn't know about this movie but when I saw Burt Lancaster was in it I had to watch. I wasn't disappointed. This is one great movie and Lancaster delivers.
Burt Lancaster’s best performance in the 1970’s.The film was not successful upon release in 1978 ‘ probably got sandwiched between “Coming Home and The Deer Hunter “,deserved better.
The US did arm the Viet Cong towards the end of WW2. The British took over Vietnam after WW2 but the French insisted on having it returned. If Britain had stayed and given it independence as it did with all it's colonies then maybe 58000+ Americans would still be alive and also maybe 1 million plus Vietnamese. The US ignored British experience in Malaysia defeating communist insurgents.
@@Bruce-1956 58000+ Americans would still be alive and also maybe 1 million plus Vietnamese mght well have lved if..... the yanks had pulled out of the place sooner when it was the intelligent thing to do. They stayed because that was US policy and US choice alone, only when policy changed and the yankie went home were there no more dead yanks/vietnamese to count, they could have left at anytime before then if they really wanted to couldnt they.
It's not that simple, the US needed France in NATO and in France after WW2 the communist party was the strongest political structure. The US feared that France could become neutral in post war Europe so they did not follow through on HoChiMin's request they put pressure on France. Which was also ironical since the french communist party was staunchly anti colonialist 🙂
The helicopter with the general came, the helicopter left. The dust was blinding their eyes BUT the uniforms and hats were freshly washed and unwrinkled 🤣😂
I think that would depend on the cut the uploader is using. I haven't watched this in a couple of decades so I can't remember what scenes are missing or not.
Nope...this how we started. Just using advisors. Very stupidly started, and even more stupidly fought. Blame LBJ. He was an idiot. Congress never declared war in Vietnam. They tried to use political half measures at the expense of our soldiers lives. Dumbest U.S. War ever.
Almost anything with Burt Lancaster is worth watching. And this is a very good movie.
This is a very good movie. First watched it many years ago. 😀

My dad was at Bien Hoa '66-67. WW2 aerial gunner, Korea and Viet Nam , combat engineer.
Great move opinion from Budapest!
Another really great movie on Vietnam,-is "The -Ugly-American"-starring Marlon Brando-in 1962--just a brilliant movie !!
One of the best if not the best movie on the S.E. Asian war.
Can’t believe I never saw this movie before. The year it came out I was 18 and in the USAF.

Thanks for the compliment I always enjoy sharing my film knowledge with my fellow film aficionados.
Little missing bit of history, Ho Chi Minh asked President Eisenhower for help against the French, and was ignored....

Thank you for your replies, so much history is missing, and now i see the pieces fitting in place.
@@Bruce-1956... Vietnam was not a British colony, so how could they give them independence? From who?
We didn’t have plastic canteens in 65 well we didn’t have them state side until around early 70
Good will is always important. Toujours.
Totally eclipsed by "The Deer Hunter."
a very intelligent film.

MAAG is military advisory assistance group. THey are not just trainers they do the fighting as well. MAAG vs MAG.
Before I bother watching this, anyone? Is it typically censored by YT" "edited" to fill in time and for content"?

that chewing gum lasts a long time.
Hard to get used to Burt Lancaster swearing

Én magam vagyok Burt Lancester talán Usa has everithing but they share only fractioms
Lt. Hamilton looks too much like Jimmy Fallon.
Anotther made in California war budget movie. Don't expect much even with the big Star.
Terrible video quality.
even worse that the average Vietnam War Hollywood flick. Oozing plastic nonsense.

Military advisor my ass😂
They send troops and get kicked , so many american dead and it was one of the more humiliated war for u.s.a😂
They were not kicked. They started to withdraw after 1968... the war ended in 1975.
