here's an advice from a person who's fluent in French:
don't get confused between *pronunciation* and *accents* .
in every language, you have to learn how to *pronounce* words correctly because a *certain* or *specific* mistake in the pronunciation of a word can lead to a misunderstanding of the word itself.
however, *accents* are a totally different thing.
you might pronounce a word correctly but it won't sound the same as when a native French person or someone who speaks french very well says it. and that's *totally fine* because it's your accent.
of course, you can always improve your accent by speaking more and listening to how French people speak.
anyways, good luck to all people learning French!

As a native English-speaker who has studied Spanish, French, and German -- in that order -- I always tell people that French is by far the hardest to learn at the beginning, because of the very strange pronunciations and spellings. Even at the intermediate level, it can still be a challenge, but it's especially at the beginning that most people are very overwhelmed. Spanish is a breeze by comparison.

Actually one of the biggest hardship in french pronounciation compared to english is that there are close to no diphthongs in french. All of our vowel sounds are short and straight which is unnatural for english speakers.
Mispronouncing the "r" in french is actually less a problem than saying the french vowel sounds when you're a native english speaker who aims to be understood in french.
Good luck in your learning of french !

@@meeekstubbular Spanish grammar is pretty consistent too, especially compared to English and French, there's some stuff that's a pain in the ass for English speakers but the pronunciation is very consistent and there are very few sounds in Spanish that English speakers can't already make (namely the trilled or rolled "r" in Spanish). Spanish doesn't have the mess of the "je, tu, il, elle, on," conjugations for group one verbs all being pronounced the exact same, so we can normally drop the pronoun in Spanish, ("yo, tú, él, ella, nosotros" for the most part have unique conjugations and you normally know who somebody is talking about based on the conjugation,) so it's more efficient.

@@Christian-tj2jo Hi Christian, I'm not sure where to find what I wrote to prompt your very good reply . I guess it must have been about the verbs almost as difficult as French "conjugaison" if not more!
But I remember learning at school and like French verbs you have to be on your toes all the time to get some mode correctly. I have stopped to learn Spanish with Duo Lingo but continue to have fun with the "discussions" I kind of signed with. The same with French which is my native language anyway but found interesting to see what it would be like to "learn" again!
Oh I just found my post above this. Yes I was puzzle by someone thinking that learning French was good because it made him appreciate Spanish!
I can't talk to much about the grammar but certainly did not have the trouble we have in French with the rule of past participle I think it's call (La bête noire des Français) when it comes to find out if the adjective carries the plural number and feminine gender of the subjects) I don't think Spanish has anything like this!

I'm a Brazilian trying to learn French 🙏 I was used to English grammar, without many verb conjugations and all. But now, with French, I had to break out of my comfort zone. It's quite similar to Portuguese (my mother language) because of the conjugations. This makes me think about how hard is Portuguese for foreigners to learn. But I think I'm doing good with my French (except for the pronunciation part 😂)

As a French person, let me tell you something : you don't have to pronounce EVERY sound well. There are some like the "r" that are important because if you can't pronounce it, it can be very problematic to say some words but if you say a French word with an "u" pronounced as in English people will understand and just find it cute ! Of course, if you want to speak French really well then you have to able to pronounce those sounds but what I mean is that when you're beginning to learn this language, don't focus on the pronunciation. At first only learn the important sounds and the others will naturally come with time (:

French: all vowel sounds with an occasional throat clearing sound in between. The worst part about French isn't even that, it is that the written language bears no resemblance to what is spoken and they refuse to make the two coincide.

True story: Many years ago, I was in France for 8 weeks. By the time I left, I could pretty well understand everything said to me (everyday things, not; e.g., philosophy) and was forming full sentences. Immersion works. Keep listening and trying, and your brain will work it out. Bon chance!!!

I can’t get the difference between “u” and “o” sound...

    • @theSkin_of_a_Killer_Bella
      @theSkin_of_a_Killer_Bella 3 ปีที่แล้ว

From my point, the "u" is more like saying "oof" without the "f".
      Now the "o".
      If u pronounce a normal "o" or English "o"(owe).
Then u may or may not realize that when u do, it has a "w" as the ending sound.
So when u pronounce the French vowel, u lessen the "w" sound to barely their or none at all ig. It almost sounds like a quick "oh", or I should say "oh" and it gets cut off at the end before u can fully pronounce the word.

Wow, I just learned so efficiently by hearing the French sounds! Great video and trips, especially the tips for how to pronunciation -- I found especially helpful with the "ee" in see but rounded lips for the 'y' vowel, which I'm having the most difficulty with. Props on getting Mailys' profile view too for extra take on pronunciation! it lit

In northern France, vowels are aspirated, such as "Mssieur" for "Sir" or "p'tit" for "small", "ach'ter" for "to buy", or "ch'val" for "horse "or "j'tai dit de v'nir" for "I told you to come", etc.... It is a Germanic pronunciation.

"ø" was the most difficult for me to pronounce because the tongue must be in the same position as pronouncing an abrupt "ay" sound, yet the lips must be rounded. This is definitely one way to exercise the orator muscle.
The same goes for "y," although for some reason, though the position of the tongue and lips doesn't make sense in my head, I'm able to pronounce it similarly to Maily's pronunciation on the first try. I'll keep at it so that my brain doesn't freeze up on me any time I pronounce it. ;)
