I feel that the main character wasnt meant to be charismatic, he was meant to be an everyman.

You heavily underrate the acting here, I think you undervalue the truly grounded and human performances from our protagonists, as well as the screenplay. There is basically no exposition in our main characters back story, we learn about him and his connection his family entirely through action. I think the acting and screenplay is being heavily underrated here, but I’m glad grace is also appreciating the undoubtedly masterful aspects of this film

Grace, I think McKay's acting was deliberately muted because that is the type of person the character is. He has to be almost machine like to survive the war and does not let his guard down until he can be sure it is safe. I think the acting is sublime in it's subtlety and nuance. On rewatch I think the differences between the two leads might have you liking the acting more.

I thought it was pretty obvious that this is a guy who has to keep it all in otherwise he'll break down and won't be able to make it through. Not sure how the acting can be in question. Its a story of a soldier doing his job in an extraordinary situation. Hes surrounded by death and destruction. How charismatic could he be? He was a reluctant participant from the start, only continuing due to his honor and duty.

I don’t think it’s a gimmick when 1) it doesn’t draw attention to the fact that it’s doing it and 2) it elevates the movie to the levels of being a masterpiece in the craft of filmmaking. And to be fair, Sam Mendes has been itching to do something like this for a while, as there were many extended takes in Skyfall and the opening of Spectre was a several minute long one shot. Because they wanted to go this route with this movie, it prevented it from being just another gritty war movie and made it an experience not to be missed. Best movie of the year. Top ten of the last decade easily.

I disagree. This movie would be contender for best picture of 2019 without the continual shot.
I just watched it, and the whole thing is so powerful, from beginning to end - even the resting on a tree at the beginning to resting on a tree at the end, the symbolism, the subject matter, the emotion.
In reality the ONLY competition this movie has is Joker and having seen both, while Joker was extraordinary, this movie made me feel something - not just once, not twice, but repeatedly over and over. You can FEEL the claustrophobia EVEN WHEN THEY ARE UNDER THE SKY, the fear, the panic, frustration, and desperation when he's just trying to get a truck out of the mud... ALL of it. The movie is powerful, and better than Joker, and had it not come out Joker would have easily won 2019 best picture because... well look at the movies that came out in 2019.

Exactly. These two guys we follow were SUPPOSED to be ordinary guys, they weren't supposed to be these ultra deep characters but just your "average joes"...i don't see how that makes the movie weak even if the characters themselves might not be that interesting, but the whole point of this movie is NOT the characters or how deep they are or that the scrpit should have been this Tarantino like craziness...it was supposed to be atleast somewhat realistic journey of two ordinary guys/soldiers on important mission through war torn landscape.

It was incredibly moving and I was surprised many times. The lead actor was fantastic in my opinion. Highly recommended. People clapped at the end and we don’t really do that over here. About the saving 1600 people. If you are not aware, during the history of mankind there was a very important "profession" in the army, messenger (runner). Here is a part from wikipedia for you:
" Even though field telephones were widely used for the first time during World War I (1914-18), they relied on copper wire lines, which were often damaged or unreliable, or simply unavailable as troops advanced. Radio technology existed, but was generally regarded as too insecure for frontline use. Hence, most armies still made extensive use of runners. "

We're talking about how this movie is a bad or good depiction of the "Brutality" of war, but unfortunately it made it seem as brutal as a game of GTA, which isn't brutal. In my opinion (and this is why we're arguing) I never really felt any of the characters in the film. I never really felt worried or scared for him. That movie made me cry because I know this could have happened to me if a war had broken out in my country. It wouldn't have been the same if the story was over the top. That's why superhero movies never make me cry, even Infinity War's ending, despite my love of the MCU.
