- A series detailing the restoration work on my Tri-ang Blue Pullman.
After many years I finally acquired one of these iconic models, but this poor old girl had been used and abused so needed a lot of TLC.

This brings back some memories from 1963 . My first train set. Im 65 now. 56 shillings and 6 pence on your box = £2.52.5
Wow amazing thanks for the info
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited I think my dad liked playing with it more than me I suspect.
52 shillings and sixpence, is pre 1971 as that's when the UK went decimal. My father gave me one of these as a birthday present in 1970 when I was 8 ! - love the video, brought back fond memories
Many thanks Malcolm, happy memories indeed :)
£2.62 and half new pence!
Nice job 👍
Thanks
They clean up nicely for sure, I have an elderly Tri-ang L1 or L class that needs the same treatment. Some of their models passed into Hornby's catalogue but not the Blue Pullman or the L1. Nice models in their time for sure.
Hi Stuart many thanks, parts 2 and 3 are out as well. Love the L1s
Very nicely done, very interesting to see how much dirt comes along!
Hahah yes indeed, looking forward to seeing it all finished
Same here
I remember wanting this unit when younger! Look forward to your refurb videos...
Cheers, yes me too :) Should be done on two more parts.
Excellent Mike, I love the Triang Blue Pullman, I have a couple of sets, great fun to run!
Hi Paul, many thanks.
Your cleaning method is about the same as mine but I completely immerse them in warm water. (not the power bogie of course.) This is going to be a great refurbishment, love it. David.
Cheers David, glad you are enjoying it, think it will be a three parter :)
I have always maintained that the Triang products were pretty good for their era, and seemed pretty robust. I think Mike that if the biggest problem in refurbishing them is just the cleaning then that’s tribute to their build. Thanks for posting your rejuvenation’s, I’ll certainly take up some of your tips. (Isn’t it amazing what a little cleaning will do!!)
WOW this comment just popped up on my feed! Sorry I've not responded sooner.
Fairy Liquid .. works wonders Mike .. good demo ... they certainly look a lot better .. be interesting to see the Blue Pullman running .. I have the Bachmann dcc one , love it ... Dave
Cheers Dave, glad you enjoyed. I am sure I'll get her there :)
Great video mike, can't wait to see what she looks like in the end!! She already looks better after a bit of a clean up, all the best mate --- Ben
Hi Ben, cheers mate very kind of you. Yes was just looking at her while the silver paint dries. More soon
Thank you so much. I got a blue pullman set on ebay. Really nice order then just stopped and kept shorting out the track. I didn't know how to get the motor out but now I do. Oddly when I put the motor on the track on its own it worked fine. I put it back together again and tested it at each stage and it's working fine. Can't work out what the problem was though!
Glad I could help!
It'll look great by the time you have upgraded her Mike, great purchase IMO and a great model for its time, I did have one but sold it (I wish I hadn't now), looking forward to the next instalment,
Stewart
Many thanks as ever Stewart, I love the Tri-ang stuff and this is a wonderful model. I'll do the best job I can on her :)
Very nicely done, looks a lot different. I am waiting to buy the Bachmann version, when I can afford it...Simon
Cheers Simon, I like the old Tri-ang ones, Bachmann one is massively expensive I feel. Thanks for watching
For the love of trains eh Mike....nice job can’t wait to her up and running ...👌...regards Fred
WOW this comment just popped up on my feed! Sorry I've not responded sooner.
I've got a boxed set of one of those. The pick ups are screwed. One day I'll have another look at it.
Should be an easy fix, good luck
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited I got handed it by an old friend decades ago. Only because I'd said I'd travelled on one back in the sixties.
@@DaiElsan wow, was it nice
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited goodness only knows, I was barely four years old at the time. But do remember the speciality bestowed on the journey and a Pullman. I think it was from Cardiff to London maybe Heathrow as we were flying out to meet my father in Italy. He was working out there at the time.
I've just noticed that your power controller in the background looks extremely similar to one I also have in the attic, from the late 60s as far as I remember!
Ah yes the H&M Safety Minor, excellent
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited After a quick scout around online, I've just remembered that the one I have upstairs is actually the H&M Clipper!
@@glenjarnold Clipper was good in its time
Very nice Mike
Am guessing when this was made worker could somke at work? Could be wrong
Very interesting video am looking forward to part 2
Keep safe ARP
Cheers Adi, I am sure it was possible however I get the feeling I have just removed many decades of grime from this train! Starting work on part 2 very soon, I am impatient to see her finished :)
Didn't one of the kit makers make the Pull an too.? Seem to remember seeing the correct bogies on a Hornby model once. Think those boxes are about 1969-70.?
Many thanks, not sure about the kit, thanks for watching
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Rosebud made a kit Back in the day Mike.
I also bought a nice old blue Pullman but the MK 1 bogies really annoy me so I fitted Hornby's MK 2 coach bogies, still not correct but rather more convincing......
@@nigelmitchell351 ah that's a good idea 💡
Any suggestions where I could obtain some wheels for the motor bogie that will run on today track
Hi, ebay may have some and I think old Hornby class 35/25 trailing wheels can be attached to the old axles.
That's a great video Mike and loved watching the way you clean those coaches, I do this about once a year to most of my stock but I use cotton ear buds instead of the tooth brush, everything else is the same though but we all have our own different methods - none of which are wrong - just our own preferred method that's all. It's amazing how dirty they were though and have probably never been cleaned in their life. Looking forward to seeing Part 2 but I am sure that once cleaned and spruced up with new transfers etc then they will look immaculate. ;-) Cheers. ............Graham
Well you have done well already Mike having cleaned and reassembled the coaches - a great start!! Cheers for now. ..........Graham
Many thanks, the bit that worries me is the blob of glue or burn on her nose, if you look at the into photo you can see it. Not sure how best to hide that
With the transfers you could try Railtec Transfers as they stock OO gauge Blue Pullman transfers for the Nanking Blue blue Pullman
Thanks I'll take a look
Wow what a find ! I never had one but always wanted it ?
These used to come through my town back in the day looking amazing with crew in their white uniforms! What a superb model by triang and flush glazing too ?
Many thanks Mike, yes a superb model, must get it out again soon
I know this is 2 years late but I've been looking into a Brighton bell/blue Pullman for God knows how long just don't know which one to get
Hi, never too late to comment and I always welcome them. It's hard to answer your question. I am very happy with my Triang one.
Part 2 is out!
Had this set but can't remember how I disposed of it back in the day🙁.
Hi Nick, ah that's sad, maybe you still have it packed away somewhere?
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimitedNo, it's def gone. I sold a chunk to a school pal who was a train fan and I think it went to him ('68)..
Hi, Can you let me know all the numbers for the coach's so I can get them for mine. Thanks
Hi thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the series. Here is some information for you en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Classes_251_and_261
Magnehesion!
Yes, that was used on some locos
Part 2 ?
Yes th-cam.com/video/-6R18D0urps/w-d-xo.html and part 3
I still have the original dummy car upstairs (unboxed) but not the motor car.
Ah right, maybe we can find a power car
Fabulous Mike. The editor at www.hornbyguide.com will, I am certain, be interested to see these. There’s an area to upload pictures and text. There’s currently no matching information in their database to the R.......numbers. Cheers, Bob
Hi Bobby, very many thanks, part 2 is on its way. I have her dated as 1963-1965! older than me lol
Model Railways Unlimited you’re welcome. Things like this deserve being items of note! Thanks for the return ‘sub’. New items coming soon.
