Thank you for showing this my Uncle Frank Walter was station there. He was in 101 squadron flying in Lancaster. He was shot down over France 4th May 1944.
Hey Jay and Irish. I'm a drone flyer, so you know that I really liked the drone flight. The stills were excellent also. The whole video was very interesting. I always try to imagine what these places were like when they were functional and the activity that was going on. Enjoyed the watch. Thanks.
Nice one Jay and good to be up in the air looking down at these interesting finds. Well done buddy. I found the ground explore so interesting and factual stuff was really awesome. Well done.😀👍👍👍👍👍👍
Squadron 101 was a specialist unit of Lancasters fitted with airborne cigar. A device manned by a German speaker breaking into German fighter transmissions contradicting instructions received from German controllers. It was very effective in removing pressure from the main bomber force but this squadron always assuming the force leader position were highly vulnerable and losses were distressingly high. A job well done !.
Loss 145 Lancasters. Each with a crew of 8; the addition to normal crew of 7 was the German speaking operator Ludford Magna parish church will carry a memorial to the brave chaps. Kind regards.
We was going to go back at some point cause there's more displaced camps. Barracks and orlet huts. We haven't found all off it and getting permission to go on land is hard work. Thanks for your info I really appreciate it. My dads an x war veteran. He has passed now but I've followed in his footsteps of going round ww2 stations and camps.
You are doing a great service to living amateur historians like myself. The only physical evidence for future generations will be on site memorials. As a school lad in the last war I feel privileged to have witnessed, heard sounds of air battles in 1940 and later chatted to sprog aircrew training near to my then school. Kind regards. ls @@AdventuresWithJay
My father survived 32 missions flying as a m/u Lancaster gunner with 101 Sqn A Flight between March to Sep 1944. I, along with 3 friends visited Ludford Magna in the summer of 2015. Had a pint or 2 of cider at the local, White Hart Inn in honour of my dad. I also was taken into the local church & shown the Sqn book of remembrance. About half the Sqn was shot down over his period of time.
@@AdventuresWithJay They had radio jamming equipment that broadcasted noise on frequencies used to vector German Night-fighters on to the nigh time bombers. The 101 planes were then exposed via their broadcasts & hunted. The Sqn also dropped massive amounts of aluminum strips to clutter German radar. Oh & they actually carried bomb loads as well.
@@AdventuresWithJay I built models of the Lancaster with my dad as a kid & I’ve a book written about the the squadron. The underside of the bombers I’ve seen were painted black however the topside of wings & fuselage were painted in a green / brown camouflage pattern.
My dad flew out of Ludford Magna on the night of 21st June 1944 and was shot down in the early hours of 22 nd June. Captured and interned. Just watching this gave me chills. He's been dead 35 years now.
I remember during the war, the area being lit up by FIDO on foggy nights so the returning Lancasters were able to find a suitable landing runway. Does any of this still remain. One of the returning Lancasters from RAF Binbrook after the Tirpitz. Raid tried to divert to Ludford because of fog, but crash landed on the approach at the top of Bully Hill Tealby.
Going on google earth the main base looks like all that’s left is the missile sites from the Cold War. Just the launch pads. My video is the despeaced camp just of the outer road.
Yeah very much Chris. I have a six sense for it. There everywhere in every place really people just don’t see it or are aware of it. Humans don’t die only the body. We just use it to carry who we really are.
Cool video and channel buddy! Enjoy seeing new places...the drone footage is sic! Hit all the buttons and all signed up...check us out when you have time and good luck!
Thank you to all who watch this video and thanks to Dawn the landowner for her guided tour of this amazing place 👍

I heard that this sqn ran top secret raids over Germany and was one of the bravest sqn within the RAF.

@kevindelaney1952 those were the good old days building models.
Love the old base explores :)
We love old bases they always have the weird smell to them. Can’t describe it

Wow what a hero your dad was. I truly salute him for his bravery. This base in the cold War became a nuclear missile station too. Thwnks for watching
Awesome jay 👌
Thank you so much 👍
Great video, thank you. I don't think 102 Squadron were ever at Ludford ww2.
I think I got that mixed up bill. It was 101 and 104 sqn
Thanks. My father flew from this airfield in Lancasters over Germany. If he had been killed during his time there I would never have been born.
That’s quite a statement jules. This was also a top secret airfield with many a Lancaster painter black
