In the original, Missy and Kizzy are older. Missy tells Kizzy that slavery is the natural order of things. She calls Kizzy a friend but doesn’t see her as equal to herself. She teaches Kizzy to read and write. Later when it’s discovered that Kizzy has written a pass for Noah, who escapes and is captured, Missy is mad that Kizzy would risk being sold away from her to help Noah. She literally says that Kizzy picked Noah when she could have lived happily with her. So even as Kizzy begs for Missy’s help as she’s being loaded in a wagon, Missy turns her back. One of the most heartbreaking scenes in the original (it may be in this one but I’ve not watched this version) is Kizzy’s mother begging on her knees for the master to not sell her child. She begs the master to whip her but not sell her away from her parents. Madge Sinclair should’ve won the Emmy for that scene alone.

These little children are NOT going to the forced labor camp. They show a semi-aerial shot where you can see both trucks driving away, and this mass of women start screaming and running after the trucks. The second is in Rabbit Proof Fence where some white Australian guys come to take the family’s children to one of their re-education/training camps for the biracial children. They force these three girls into the car while their mothers are running and trying to grab at the car as it’s leaving, all of them screaming - except for the elderly woman who is hitting herself in the head with a rock (which I have since heard, is a funerary ritual. That grandmother thought she would never see the girls again…) Why do I mention these? BELLE AND KIZZY’S 1977 SEPARATION HITS ME WORSE.
