There have been minor changes in how Arch is installed since this video.
The concepts are still the same, but you might want to watch this with the Arch Wiki installation guide open to check for differences (wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installation_guide).
I may make an update video soon for the more recent installation.

Yeah, by looking through various video comments I was *finally* able to get Arch installed as it goes now, however when installing xorg (or using your config script) it just seems to get stuck, switching between ttys just stops it when I go back, I can't seem to find anything about this on google, do you have any ideas?

Wow this is the first name, I've made an arch install work and mostly understood what you were explaining to us. Most videos are horrible as they go way to fast and require you to pause constantly, just to type commands. You actually explained what you were doing nice and slowly so i could take it all in and process it in my messy head. Now I don't actually need to use Manjaro to get an Arch Linux like experience but install Arch for real now> yes this may take longer but I now have satisfaction of knowing I installed it myself using commandline. Thank you ever so much for this @Luke Smith, maybe in the future i'll be brave enough to dip my toes into i3wm and then maybe LaTeX etc

IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO USE ETHERNET AND USING WIFI-MENU DOESN'T WORK:
Issue the command 'ip link'. This will list your internet interfaces. You'll see something like 'emp0s3'. This is your Ethernet Interface, because it starts with an E. You'll also see something like 'wls1'. This is your Wi-Fi Interface.
Once you've found your Wi-Fi Interface, issue the command 'wifi-menu -o your Wi-Fi Interface here'. The -o tells Wifi-Menu what Interface to use. Connect to your Wi-Fi, and then follow the instructions of the video.

150% of ram as swap is unnecessary for a typical user. I don't even know where he heard that from. I always heard 100% of ram as swap and that is if you want hibernation. You can even go with no swap and still be fine if you have like 8 GB of ram or more.

    • @archgirl
      @archgirl 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

bunu The general rule USED to be RAMx2=swap, but that was back when computers typically had around 4GB max RAM. The rule sorta stuck but I never use it. Any more than 6GB of RAM, I wouldn't even use swap.

Best tutorial I've seen till now, but I'm having a problem. At the point where we were supposed to install the bootloader. I had to change the file system on my /boot partition to fat32 and make it bootable. And the rest went smoothly. After rebooting however. The system just keeps restarting when it get to the GRUB screen, over and over. I'm in legacy mode btw.
Just for the record I started fresh. Made four partitions again, with the same set-up. Stoped before the part where I setup the mount points to ask this question, what should I do if I get the same issue?

    • @DrathVader
      @DrathVader 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

He's running ffmpeg to record everything, I'm not sure how hot the X220 usually gets but ~90C seems about what I'd expect for a tiny laptop with generic thermal paste.
12GB of swap is retarded though. I have 6GB installed, I run Plasma and often have 100-200 tabs opened in Firefox. I have a swap partition just in case, but I've never seen more than ~50MB of usage on it. Since Luke uses i3 and generally a low memory footprint setup I'm certain the swap is literally never used.

    • @ragilmalik
      @ragilmalik 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

ArchGirl no. there are no general rules of allocating swap space. better yet, use Zram for better performance.
otherwise, swap is used only for two purposes, hibernation and avoid OOM. to understand your needs, you need to try it yourself with your daily dose.
seriously, general rules are for people who are "linux first timers". other than that, ignore it.

From The Arch Linux Website :
    -----------------
`base` group replaced by mandatory `base` package - manual intervention required
    2019-10-06
The base group has been replaced by a metapackage of the same name. We advise users to install this package (pacman -Syu base), as it is effectively mandatory from now on.
Users requesting support are expected to be running a system with the base package.
    Addendum:
Be aware that base as it stands does not currently contain:
    - A kernel
    - An editor
... and other software that you might expect. You will have to install these separately on new installations.
    -------------------
What this means: When installing you'll now need to install : base, linux (the kernel), linux-firmware and a text editor of your choice (nano or vim etc) at a minimum. You may also want base-devel, and appropriate networking and filesystem utilities. Check the Arch install guide on their wiki.

I was trying to do arch install for the first time today within Virtualbox and every time after reboot I got only "grub>" prompt. After 20 times of failed installation and comparing output of each command I realized that problem was in grub-mkconfig as it couldn't find kernel and initramfs. What I needed was to perform "pacstrap /mnt base linux linux-firmware" instead of only base. So, as a random guess I did "pacstrap /mnt linux-lts linux-headers base" and after reboot there was no problem this time . There is not any info about this in any of the Q&A forums. Just after that I have checked Archwiki and there it is indeed mentioned that linux and linux-firmware packages to be installed along with base package. And now I was looking in the comment section if someone one encountered this before. I wish I had seen your comment earlier. Thank you.

5:36 dd actually stands for "copy and convert", but since cc was already used for the C compiler they went with dd instead.
Edit: also I'm sure you know about this by now but adding bs=4M makes the transfer go much faster. It transfers in blocks of 4 MB instead of the default 1 sector (512 B).

For anyone getting the "This GPT partition label contains no BIOS Boot Partition" error when trying to install grub at 41:55, you're going to need to create an additional partition of 2MB and designate it as a BIOS_Boot partition for grub to install and work upon reboot. Easiest way I found was to set up your partitions like normal in fdisk at 17:20, but make your first partition the 2MB one, then add the rest as normal. To designate the partition as BIOS_boot, save and exit fdisk, then enter gdisk /dev/sdx. Once in gdisk, change the partition type to ef02, which sets it as the BIOS_boot partition. I'm sure there's a better way of doing it but that's how I got it working.

Why change to su before? In the video you ones typed sda. If your cat had walked on the kbd then, you'd have had a big problem. Just sudo dd ..... gives you the time to reread before typing your password and execute the irreversible .
hda , hdb etc stands for hard-disk (from the old IDE days) The s replaced the h for scsi-devices (which sata is as well).

So I created a partition on one of the others, and installed Arch there (skipping over your partitioning and grub instructions). I then used grub-customizer in Xubuntu, and it found the partition and included it in the boot list. So now I have Arch to play with, w/oi disturbing the other OS's.

I fully disagree with your opinion on preferring CSM/BIOS booting over UEFI booting. You are providing a disservice to people with a new UEFI computer by advising them they should install with an MBR and disable UEFI booting. I also want to add that you should not assume the block device (on regular x86 PCs) is always called /dev/sda or /dev/sdb, sdc etc. Here is why: NVMe drives follow a different naming scheme. Not everyone is using old Thinkpads to run Arch Linux. Maybe you should also try a modern machine.
14:20 _"I am going to put in a link in the description for another install video where they show you how to install on a UEFI device."_ I don't see this link in the description?

    • @AuroraNemoia

bought a laptop a few years back, was UEFI, first thing I did was switch it to legacy boot and never switched it back since. To consumers, UEFI does 2 things, make the system boot 0.3 seconds faster, and store a Windows 8/10 product key instead of a sticker. To Linux users, it causes a whole buncha issues. I installed Arch on UEFI once, it was hell, won't do it again.

    • @voiceoftreason1760
      @voiceoftreason1760 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You're giving yourself limited partitioning options by doing that. I understand that you might do it if you don't want to learn how UEFI works (which isn't really that complicated), but don't tell others to do it without telling them about the disadvantages. there aren't really any issues with UEFI except for having to learn about something new. Secure boot is a feature you can turn if if you want. UEFI doesn't handle windows product keys. UEFI doesn't cause any issues. Maybe you didn't understand something. What kind of issues do you think it causes?

    • @ragilmalik
      @ragilmalik 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Digital Insan1ty your advice makes no sense. BIOS (we should say legacy boot, not bios, since it can be confused with bios motherboard and bios bootloader) has no relation with partitioning. you can install bios or uefi bootloader using GPT/MBR.
and linux could care less about primary or logical partition. UEFI boot on MBR also only requires one primary partition to set the EFI system which the Extensible Firmware Interface file will be loaded by UEFI bootloader. you still have the option to make 3 extended partitions which can hold to like 256 partitions.
and indeed, to some linux distro, UEFI boot is not supported (puppy linux for example) and there are some people who have trouble installing arch-like distribution using UEFI bootloaders. (just google it)
if a mobo supports dual firmware bootloaders, give no fuck to legacy or uefi booting. just make sure you you know how to type "(insert mobo series) boot uefi or legacy" in google before installing an OS.

Used Arch for 2 years. Learned a lot from it - most of what i know about linux world (thanks to its robustness and absolutely the best archwiki). It was fast, it was robust, it had many software and very new packages. But it had a one problem ... unreliable updates - they tend to break things. Sometimes some minor one like automounting, resolution or tv tuner driver and sometimes bigger like entire Xorg, sound or NTFS mounting. Last time i was using Arch i did most stupid thing - updated it at the end of the day, just before turning off pc. In case of Arch it was really serious sin, i learned to do it only if i had time to fix some things. Next time i was turning it on i needed PC badly for some work and offcourse some bad things happend. At first they didnt seem serious - my network speed just has been limited to 100kbs - some bug in network drivers and its cooperation with kernel. I tried to rollback update, but haste is not a good advisor and ended with no X and chrooting from live CD. But i had dualboot with Windows loaded it up and ... that moment became a breaking point - after almost 6 years with linuxes i threw them off for 3 years. I came back 2 months ago, first with Fedora, then with OpenSUSE and finally with Mint KDE which i used as my first linux distro. And i LOVE it! Its easy, it has everything i want, it popular so dont have problems with installing things from out of repositories, even h264 works one EVERY browser (not Firefox only like on fedora or suse). It just works. I always wondered why such person like Linus Torvalrds dont use Arch, Gentoo, Slackware or something like that but something very easy like Fedora or Mint. It seemed to me natural enviroment to what he is doing. Now, as a developer, husband and parent i fully understand why...

For swap you could choose to use a swap file instead of a swap partition.
you can create a swap file with dd:
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/swap bs=1K count=4M status=progress
The above command will create a swap file of 4GiB, you should be fine with 2 or 4 GiB
The size of the swap file is the product of bs and count
    K means 1024 bytes
    M means 1024*1024 bytes
    1K * 1M = 1GiB
    1K * 4M = 4GiB
Set a Linux swap area on the file:
    mkswap /swap
    Specify swap file:
    swapon /swap
genfstab will detect swap space and provide output you can append to /etc/fstab

lost+found is a folder where fsck puts items it can't reconcile to files. So traditionally if you had a filesystem corruption but fsck was able to fix it, you might end up with some files in lost+found. They'd be named as numbers, which were the inode numbers, and the contents was usually just part of a file. These days most modern filesystems, including ext4, are journalled meaning they can usually recover to a consistent point, meaning you're less likely to see anything in lost+found. lost+found goes all the way back to unix filesystems.

About having root and home in different partitions: Good thing about having them on the same partition is you don't need to know in advance how much space your programs need to have because you can just move your data from the home partition if your drive is full. If you decide you want 50 GB for your root instead of 25 GB after installation with the two partition solution, well, good luck (it's not impossible to change it but it's way bigger PitA than the one partition solution).

Hey dude, thanks for teaching me the fundamental basics of Arch, without this video I would have stayed with Manjaro (not to be rude of the Manjaro team, they did an amazing job, I just like having *control* over everything I do). Although your video isn't all that in-depth with how things could be customized. Like using extended partitions for the Root and Home partitions, and setting bootable partitions in case some BIOSs need it, or even trying to boot without a Boot partition, it still helped me open the door to how Linux in general works. Searching across the web just to figure-out how minute things work in Linux.
Even though I've failed to install Arch a few times (tried installing it with UEFI), I'm not giving up until I see a working Desktop environment.
So I thank you for properly introducing me to the world of Linux, I'm really starting to enjoy this OS for what it could be!

Looking at their Conky, System monitor or whatever, the average user will rarely see any swap being used. If you are running 8Gb or more of RAM, 4Gb of swap is more than enough. Any application that heavily relies on swap can generally create it's own temporary swap space as needed.

Protip: If you have multiple hard drives on your machine, try running
    lsblk -So NAME,MODEL,SERIAL,SIZE
This will list the model and serial numbers of all your physical drives (which are the same as the numbers printed by the manufacturer on the label on the physical drive). You really don't want to accidentally repartition the wrong drive and erase all your rare Pepes, causing much sadness. So this may help you not make that mistake, by identifying which block device name corresponds to which physical drive in your PC.
Installing Arch is not difficult at all. The only fussy part is setting up hard drive partitions in the terminal. It would be nice if they gave you a nicer UI for that. The rest of it is pretty easy.

13:00 - My laptop uses UEFI boot mode and I load the kernel as an EFI executable. If you want to do the same you can use a program called efibootmgr that is included in the arch installer.
Create an ESP for a GPT partitioned disk:
fdisk/gdisk: Create a partition with partition type EFI System (EFI System in fdisk or EF00 in gdisk)
After creating the ESP, you must format it as FAT32:
    mkfs.fat -F32 /dev/sdxY
    mount ESP to /boot
Modify your motherboard's boot entries with efibootmgr:
efibootmgr --disk /dev/sdX --part Y --create --gpt --label "Arch Linux" --loader /vmlinuz-linux --unicode "root=/dev/sdBZ rw initrd=/initramfs-linux.img"
Where /dev/sdX and Y are the disk and partition where the ESP is located. Change the root= parameter to reflect your Linux root (disk UUIDs can also be used)
If you have an Intel CPU, install the intel-ucode package in addition, and enable microcode updates by adding initrd=/intel-ucode.img to the efibootmgr command above:
    ... --unicode "root=/dev/sdBZ rw initrd=/intel-ucode.img initrd=/initramfs-linux.img"
Running efibootmgr without arguments will print boot information and bootorder e.g:
    BootCurrent: 0000
    Timeout: 0 seconds
    BootOrder: 0000,2001,2002,2004
    Boot0000* Arch Linux
    Boot2001* EFI USB Device
    Boot2002* EFI DVD/CDROM
Boot3000* Internal Hard Disk or Solid State Disk
To set the boot order, run:
    efibootmgr --bootorder XXXX,XXXX
You can find more information here: wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/EFISTUB
