Robson also had elite success in Holland, Portugal and Spain..He would likely have won the First Division title with Ipswich in the late 1970s and early 1980s but for a Clough led Forrest, Paisleys Liverpool and Villa, all European cup winners in that period as well..
I agree how good Robson was, but over his 4 Tournaments he had disasters. 84 never qualified, 86 QF well out played in that match, 88 3 losses, 90 Easy route, struggled past Belgium and Cameroon. Lost in SF. I write in the same way as it applies to Southgate. It's an indictment on our media space that such intelligent and forthright personality as Mr Barnes is not a regular or mainstay analyst on such programmes. I think of most of the other "analysts" and it feels me with such dismay. He makes them all sound so stale.
Potter is the perfect manager. He has won buggerall in his career-just like England-and plays boring, negative football-just like England. Can't think of a better suited manager for England.
He's correct about world class players and we (England) don't have any. The standard of the premiership is dropping each season with over inflated players being sold at over inflated prices and you can see why players are now moving abroad. We need a manager who won't be afraid to drop players and after the Euros you could be looking at 4 or 5 players not being guaranteed a place in the starting eleven, a players wins his place on performances and not hype and name.
Southgate analysis is simple. 1. He must be respected and praised for achieving more than any England manager since Alf Ramsey; 2. He's a class act and gentleman in the way he unified the team, managed the players and media; 3. He resigned with dignity at the exact right time as he's taken us as far as we can go; 4. The negative, defensive style of football he employed is simply not appropriate for the best attacking options we've had for generations; 5. We now need a manager that can create a system and environment that actually maximises our world class players' talents so we can see the best of Bellingham, Foden. Oh and who picks based on form and performance, not favouritism or brand.
All us England fans wanted to see in the tournament was true grit and determination. Regardless if we are the best or not England never turned up and that is on the Manager, ultimately he is in charge. If you get bad customer service in a business you don't ask for the next assistant, you ask for the manager. You assume they are in charge and responsible for the training and quality of service the staff are giving. As a Leicester fan I know you can win things on grit and determination and playing as a team, and not just who has the best players.
The past players Barnes is talking about had very different draws. The opposition was also far better than those we play now so it isn't a great comparison
This is wrong. Sven faced a ten man Brazil for 45 mins in a World Cup in Japan where all the decent teams had already gone out. Argentina and France went out in the group stages! Italy to South Korea. It was a golden opportunity missed. Southgate would have got vilified for that. I could mention the Portugal defeats but tbh I’m still annoyed by them 😊
Some people are celebrating, yet they should hold their horses and be careful what they wish for. Southgate has raised standards and expectations. Under Southgate England has gone deep into tournaments. There is now an expectation to win and het to finals. If the next man doesn't qualify or get out of the group-stage, people will be crying out for Southgate in a few years time! There will have to be pragmatism at times, not all teams can merely be turned over. In terms of the new manager: If English, has to be: Eddie Howe or Carsley. If non-English: Klopp (though doubtful he would ever take, as he wants to relax, so no idea why his name is being constantly thrown into the mix). No way Lampard, Rooney or Gerrard. They have poor man-management and inter-personal skills. No way: the Argentian Pochettino.
Barnes is bang on! Portugal and France. Dreadful. Turkey..i liked that performance at the big stage..after so many dark horse times..finally Turkey turned up. Holland were solid. Germany at home were not embarrassed.
I think what JB is referring to with management style is a generational thing, we generation Xers now have to manage millennials and gen z and I think GS had the recipe right, the players were engaged and wanted to play for him
Should have asked john if he was happy with how england played during these euros. He said himself the england players were better than the spanish players. And then nullifies the effect of the manager. Yamal was non existent in the final he says? He set up the first goal. Love John because as a liverpool fan i adored him when he played there. But his thoughts on football since then and now dont impress me.
Most critics are not saying England should have won, but that they could have but mostly didn't play to their potential. It's not unreasonable to regard England as one of the tournament favourites, they had 3rd best FIFA ranking (European team)
As a nation we have to get over the mentality of ‘a manager getting the sack so their rubbish’. Some of the greatest manager like Ancelloti have been sacked multiple time yet still gets hired. Potter has a style and philosophy that’s attacking which this team needs.
Everyones been wanting southgate sacked, now were stuck with potter, lampard, rooney etc and the majority of entitled England fans are linking us to klopp and anchilotti. Barnes is right, were not entitled to win every tournament. Give your spains out there some credit
precisely you think its easy to win a trophy there only two of them either the copa america if your in southh america ,the euro then the most prized possession and hardest of them all the world cup and not every big team can arrive at the final at once france didnt make it ,germany didnt make it portugal didot make it ,italy, holland , Croatia
That's why I said it will be many years down the road before Southgate's work gets appreciated. There were better teams with world class players in the past that never won a major tournament. England shouldn't feel so entitled to win.
Barnes was right about how we should of brought Sterling, Rashford, Grealish and Maguire as it was a team, Southgate built a team and basically sold 4/5 players all at once and tgen expected to just gel. It also would of affected the mood in the camp and it's Bellingham was a problem on and off the pitch and there was no one there to calm his ego down. You don't just pick players on form as you will never have a team. Other countries don't automatically pick best players
Only 2 Spanish player was in Real Madrid champions league starting 11 which means majority of Spanish team will be from other Clubs such as the 5 from Atletico Club.
Lol Nico william new in international, yamal, olmo, a CB in Saudi, a RB, they swore that they wont swap with walker, etc. Talking fast doesnt = making sense.
Problem was the overhyped players, not GS. Rice, Bellingham, Kane, Gallagher, Maguire, etc. were the problem not GS. England was an average team that didn’t deserve to reach the finals.
Well done John Barnes. Us 🏴 do have one of the very best squads in the world , yes but there are a few other groups that are a bit ahead of us , and some others that are not far behind us, at all. England does have BIG potential, tho.

Anyone but Potter! His friendly PE Teacher act may have worked in the lower divisions of Sweden but he showed at Chelsea that he's not the right man to manage top-class professionals. Apart from getting a couple of promotions in Sweden, what has he actually achieved in football? He finished mid-table in his one season at Swansea, who, incidentally, got to the play-offs in the two seasons after he left, his Premier League win percentage at Brighton was very similar to Chris Hughton's and, like Swansea, Brighton were better off without him and he had a nightmare at Chelsea and has been out of work for about 18 months! Having said that, he's got "FA Man" written all over him and I can see why he's the clear favourite to replace Southgate.
Lower divisions of Sweden? To take a team from the 4th division in Sweden to the champions league and beating Arsenal at Arsenal, would seem to indicate some talent, no?

@@waynemarshall8836 yes he wouldn't play players on reputations
We need someone with a proven record of winning major trophies - regardless of nationality. Tuchel is the man, surely? Ten major trophy wins under his belt. No current ties to any club (therefore no compensation to pay out) and can start immediately. He commands his technical area and gets the best out of his players. Southgate was just sat there praying for miracles.
@@treble20 I don’t understand how English people want a German managing there team. Genuinely laughable
Sir Bobby Robson also managed and won things at club level, producing and coaching some of the worlds best. Southgate got Middlesbrough relegated 🤷♂️
It was after in his later jobs as he improved with experience it was shown how good he was, the press were against him quite often as well.. Although he was good all the way as I remember, sometimes it's the players..
@@markpodlesak7204 In his defence for failing to qualify for '84'..they was a shedding process going on..Keegan/Brooking/Thompson and others were being discarded..Italy failed to qualify as well..my biggest criticism of him was over the poor start in Mexico when the team's form was good and not following the logic of pre/tourney matches and qualifications, but dropping Robson/Wilkins would have taken exceptional bravery but they would have swept the group if they had done so..The '88' campaign was a disaster but it was a bloody hard group with the two teams that produced the two finalists and England held their own for 70 mins against the Dutch and played the Irish off it for most of their match..Never cracked how to play Waddle and Barnes together..Robson made England a highly effective international team in the 1980s though they were not Germany etc al..
@@kailashpatel1706 Yes I get and remember all this. But I wrote from the reasoning used today against Southgate.
In 82 they coped quite well without Keegan or Brooking, but did miss some quality.
John has always been a top notch pundit right from super sport. This guy should be a regular cause the other are below par tbh.
The guy screen left knows his stuff and I love the fact he’s wearing an England top too👏👏👏
Southgate analysis is simple.
I could mention the Portugal defeats but tbh I’m still annoyed by them 😊
If England fans are going to bring the quality of opposition into the debate, it will be a never-ending story.
Sport on John Barnes👏🏾👏🏾 But that Graham Potter part beings a spin to the conversation smh
In terms of the new manager:
If English, has to be: Eddie Howe or Carsley.
If non-English: Klopp (though doubtful he would ever take, as he wants to relax, so no idea why his name is being constantly thrown into the mix).
No way Lampard, Rooney or Gerrard. They have poor man-management and inter-personal skills.
No way: the Argentian Pochettino.
3 wins in these Euros. One Score Draw. One no score draw. One Loss. That is SG’s achievement in this tournament.
@@GaneshJU I'm talking since his tenure not judging just on this tournament.
Barns was correct about the so-called golden generation here. How many of the current team would have played ahead of anyone in that team. Very few.
yep
We have some excellent players but if i'm honest if I was doing an all time best England 11 none of the current crop would be in it.
wow never thought JB would talk that much sense
Graeme Potter is undoubtedly the man to take us forward. Very impressive manger skills.
Exactly Ancelotti was the nearly man at Juventus and Parma before he started winning. Same with Inzaghi.
Refreshing to hear a smart man speak about football
John Barnes scored one goal people remember and that's it he really has nothing to say IMHO.
A damn site more than you.
go look up the one he scored for england against uruguay
Get in, John. So well said.
Barnes doesnt think his time at Celtic and Tranmere as a manager was a failure, his opinion on management is irrelevant .That is all
Everyones been wanting southgate sacked, now were stuck with potter, lampard, rooney etc and the majority of entitled England fans are linking us to klopp and anchilotti. Barnes is right, were not entitled to win every tournament. Give your spains out there some credit
precisely you think its easy to win a trophy there only two of them either the copa america if your in southh america ,the euro then the most prized possession and hardest of them all the world cup and not every big team can arrive at the final at once
france didnt make it ,germany didnt make it portugal didot make it ,italy, holland , Croatia
Barnes..........."Maximized Potential"?! he got nowhere close to that in this tournament
Only 2 Spanish player was in Real Madrid champions league starting 11 which means majority of Spanish team will be from other Clubs such as the 5 from Atletico Club.
Lol
Nico william new in international, yamal, olmo, a CB in Saudi, a RB, they swore that they wont swap with walker, etc.

Nice one mate! Your analysis on Aston Villa is great & it would seem you have a liking for our great club, cos you make alot of Villa content & proves you have good taste &. with much happening at Villa nowadays many talking points.... UP THE MIGHTY VILLA!!! 😉
Are we honestly comparing someone like Declan Rice to ANYONE in that Spanish side?
Potter not big enough for Chelsea is starting to sound at about the righy level for England. Cos the work at Brighton might be right level we need.
Is it up to England manager to coach players how to keep the ball, when to pass it forward? If these players were the best in the world they should know how to do that already?
It won’t make one bit of difference whoever takes over. The FA need to restructure the Prem, when a major tournament is in the same calendar year. Then maybe, just maybe, Fresh players, fit athletes, ALL giving it 100%, may just bring home a trophy, and change the past 58 years of burnt out players in our footballing History. 🤔 Thanks Gareth, huge efforts, much respect 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Am I the only one who can see this ?
Lee Carsley will get the job, we know the FA will promote internally first, its the easiest smoothest path, the players know him. He won the U21s last summer with high press football and with existing players such as Palmer, Gordon. He will start as interim and go from there, gives the FA time to assess the situation without all the media frenzy.
And also he's probably cheaper than the other candidates. In addition, if he fails to do well in the 2026 WC, it's also easier to find excuses.

I’ve been hearing these same arguments and excuses all my life. English players never play well enough as a national team…they lost again.
Now everyone starts talking about the young players, the next tournament, the next manager, the promise for the future blah blah blah…They were saying the same about Lineker, Gazza and Barnes Hoddle and Waddle, Beckham et al… and we are still in the same situation.
Exactly. Top international teams dissect their team performance post tournament and come back stronger to actually win something. England always looks for someone to blame and find a ton of excuses for not winning. The same old story.
