- Playing on gut strings and with historical bows, the four Chiaroscuro musicians - who came together in 2005 - bring their individual and multi-national talents to two masterpieces of the Viennese classical tradition, Beethoven’s impassioned example (1801) and Schubert’s sombre, song-based masterpiece (1824).
32:50 Schubert String Quartet in d minor, D810, "Death and the Maiden"
Fantastic. Really enjoyed Chiaroscuro's delivery of this Beethoven work. Love Wigmore Hall, such a perfect venue for such an amazing quartet.
Wonderful intrepretion. Without the steel strings and vibrato of contemporary playing, the sound is so much clearer, lighter and the voices more readily heard. Bravo!
It's also the way of playing, they don't try to sustain all the notes with density as most of the quartets did always.
Extraordinaire quatuor ! Quel engagement, quelle musicalité, quelle complicité entre les musiceins, et quel son fabuleux ! A suivre absolument ....
28 July 2019:

String Quartet in C minor Op. 18 No. 4
Schubert:
String Quartet in D minor D810 'Death and the Maiden'
Just amazing ! Thank you.
Brilliant!
SUBLIME!
Playing so intense my hair stands at the back
Great performance however these quartets have been played by the very best, I prefer Alban Berg Quartet.
Thanks for letting us know!!
@@davidhume201 Fair enough, but nowadays the Chiaroscuro can comfortably be ranked with the very best.
