    There is nothing like the vulnerability of a Roy ballad. Nowhere to hide. No theatrics. It's all from the heart, bare, and bold and pure and true. RIP

    I've been a prodigious listener of Jazz for the last 40 years, often buying albums based on a track I listened to in the shop and anticipating it would reflect the rest of the album. When I heard Roy had passed I did a quick check knowing I had a couple of his albums (or so I thought) It turned out I had around 10 CDs, I revisited a lot of them and realized I hadn't given him the credit he deserved, he has become my favorite trumpet/flugelhorn player, his Ballards are particularly outstanding, his tone and phrasing are second to none.

    One of the greats. Notice how he respects the melody and doesn't crap all over it like so many show-off musicians.

      @vladforte 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Agree 100%! So sad, we lost that greatest musician! About respecting melody - it is one of my disappointments with many modern jazz musicians. They are very good improvisers, but many of them ignore melodies and take advantage of every second to show off!!

    • @StreetHierarchy
      @StreetHierarchy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean, a lot of "show off musicians" just have a more highly-developed sense of melody than you do.

    • @judahbmusic
      @judahbmusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Street Hierarchy “Highly developed sense...” That is a misconception in itself. Understanding and respecting the melody itself while embellishing around it with balance is like “Catching light in a bottle” - either you understand how to do it or you don’t. There is no higher sense of musicianship than this.

    RIP Mr. Hargrove although I'm about 15 or 20 years older than Roy. Our birthdays were on the same day. I had the pleasure and honor of seeing him live at the the Blue Note in the Village in NYC Sept of 2017 while in the city visiting my daughter and son in law. It was a very special performance as he was there at least for a week maybe 2, 3 shows a night. My daughter got us seats right up front. Literally could have put my foot onstage. Man, it was an awesome night. I tried to speak with Roy briefly between sets but was unable to, I did speak with the band though. Such a talent, you will be missed my brother.

      If/when you ever have a chance to see any of the remaining jazz greats, don't pass it up. I was lucky enough to enjoy this live... and get some nice photos too. That's me down front at 4:09 and 7:12, taking photos. Seems like just yesterday. My wife and I fell in love with Newport because of the jazz festival and have been back for vacation six times since 2001. We were there a few weeks ago and, while we still love Newport, the jazz festival is not what it used to be. Great, true jazz artists like Roy Hargrove are really, really missed. RIP

    Happy Birthday Roy--October 16. I stopped going to live concerts because so many new "artistes" arrive looking as if they just rolled out of bed and sounding as if they are using their audience to practice on. Roy Hargrove seemed to respect both his audiences and the compositions. He always lets the melody be identifiable, and his playing is a mini-master class in how to execute, support and sustain notes. Thank you Roy. Hope you are in peace.

I took my friend's son and my son to NYC for some sightseeing, which included my and their first trip to the top of the World Trade Center. The kids took some goofy selfies with a camera. Then the world changed. Documenting jazz greatness for the price of advertising is one of the great attributes of youtube. :-)

    there are times when you want to paly the melody exactly like it is written and times you want to add different colors.....like especially when you study music and do have ideas....question of choice; playing live you may do it exactly as written in some choruses....then maybe improv.; ad lib.; in others and mix....showing off x playing the ideas that come into your mind......infinity....that is what music is to me!!!!
