5.35 ”It's kind of bulky but if you're needing something this big, you probably don't care what it looks like”. That was a very ignorant and almost offensive comment, I must say. I think most of us who need life-long AFOs care what they look like. Why wouldn't we care about its appearance just because we need more support? I've had one that looked almost exactly like the one on the screen and it was beautiful. Now I wear a custom-made carbon fibre jointed AFO covered with leather. It's even more beautiful and I absolutely love it, it's very comfortable. My AFO ends just below the knee; I could never walk with the short ones shown in this video.

I wear a custom AFO with bilateral Tamarack Joints. Primary reason is Chronic Ankle Instability and chronic ankle dislocations (due to Ehlers danlos syndrome) with torn tendons and ligaments (I want to avoid ankle surgery) and secondary reason is drop foot. I was kind of sad at first because I just wanted one for my right foot/ankle and my dr made me get n wear one on each foot. They help a lot though. Not a single dislocation since getting them

I also have EDS and was born with bilateral clubfoot which was corrected by surgery and they prescribed shoe inserts which ruined the shoes they made me buy for them since I’m not able to hold my ankle straight🥲 but I’m glad they help you and I’m for sure gonna ask about them next time I have an appointment with my EDS clinic. Also if you are in physical therapy do you take them off for that or keep them on?

@@malanamarie5206 hey I take them off for physical therapy. Mine also extra stretch out all my shoes too i go through one pair a year. If you cant get AFOs I reccomend the neoprene ones over that counter at pharmacies. I go to the geneticist for EDS he writes letters to my drs and they do what he asks. There's also an EDS clinic in Boston that i go to. Id rather wear the braces than get the surgery on my ankles that has a low success rate.

Hi, great video! Could be my saviour? I have CMT with high arches, hammer toes and cavus foot. Which brace would you recommend because at the moment I feel like I’m walking on the outside of my feet and am very unstable? Thank you

I would talk to a pedorthist or podiatrist for prescription.

I have severe flat foot in one foot and high arch in the other. I have severe chronic ankle instability and pain in both feet. I have been wearing regular insert orthotics and have tried both OTC and custom. However they don’t provide enough support. I have been thinking about getting AFOs instead because they would be able to not allow my ankle or arch to roll over because the brace would go above my ankle. I also believe that some of my ankle pain in one ankle is due to my flat feet/ high arch problem. Would you recommend to a person who is young, a hinged or rigid AFO?

I have Chronic Ankle Instability and Foot Drop. I use the type with Tamarack Joints so less muscle wasting. I highly reccomend getting billyfoot shoes theyre zipper shoes for AFOs but look very cool.

I was born with bilateral clubfoot and Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and my doctor prescribed me shoe inserts but my $130 shoes that’s they told me to get are already ruined because my ankle isn’t strong enough to hold straight so the side of the shoes are shaved down/flattened which is very painful and what the inserts were supposed to prevent which we $350 before insurance all for nothing. I felt like I should have been prescribed hinged AFOs (or unhinge since I already can barely move my ankle up and down) after watching this I’m even more sure and it makes me angry that all that money went to waist and now if I do ask for AFOs which are more expensive they will have to be paid for out of pocket 😤😭
