    Nice to see someone not cut corners that’s 25 years younger than me. This is 100% correct coming from a 30 year veteran construction business owner. Everything he said is true, even about structural movement and drywall attachment to a structure that moves seasonally.

    Ben As a rookie to drywalling your videos have augmented my lack of experience with knowledge and Because of that knowledge I have been able to jump into the mud with both feet and have the confidence to get the job done to a surprisingly high level. It seems to be all about how the mud is put on and really I don’t have to sand very much … just texturing after the second and subsequent coats. Thank-you for your excellent and informative videos, you do such an excellent job at describing the skills and moments of the trowel and hawk.

    I have repaired many of these over the years for my customers and they can be very time consuming. Especially trying to remove the loose mud on the corner bead. I usually use All-Purpose mud to make my repairs, but will likely change to using quick-set after seeing this video. Another great video, Ben!

    Here in the states we still use metal bead but I don't screw or nail the bead. I use a specialized tool to install the bead so it is only attached to the drywall. Then I use mesh tape and quick set for first coat which stops it from cracking in the future. Works great. Great channel bud. Keep it up!

    Great video. We have lots of dented and cracked metal beads. I curse the textured walls we have in California. Not only are they ugly, in my opinion, but they make it so difficult to do repairs. I just hope I will be able to match the texture after fixing the bullnose corners. I love the velvety look of smooth walls. If our house were smaller, I might be tempted to skim-coat all of the walls to get rid of the texture.

  • @turnerdrywallrestoration8077
    @turnerdrywallrestoration8077 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very nice work! I have to repair cracks often because the houses move a bit in California, so the old metal beads don’t stand a chance. I do the same as you, chipping out the lose mud behind the crack but I like to use my gun with 1” staples to tighten up all the lose spots.
    On new installs however I am really loving vinyl bead from Trim-Tex, using their method of spray glue and 1/2” staples. Like you said if the corner bead is only attached to the drywall then there’s very little chance of cracking.

    I had this problem in my parents basement running along the corner of a soffit. What I did was very similar. I dug out the cracks with a 5 in 1 tool. Then I used Fiba Fuse tape over the cracks and coated them couple times. My only concern is after seeing your video, I realized I should have used at least couple more screws to secure the corner bead ! Shit. Hopefully it holds ! 😅. Let’s see, that was back in May. And so far it’s held up. Thanks for the video it was very helpful. I mostly paint but most of the work I bid has drywall and plaster issues. Keep up the good work brother

    Love your vids! I'm confused why you use mesh when I just watched your paper vs mesh video where you say to pretty much always use paper?

    • @aaronreeder5753
      @aaronreeder5753 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think he used mesh because he was using thinset and the mesh will.provide strength over paper kind of like rebar in concrete.

    • @danervin2530
      @danervin2530 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Aaron Reeder QUICKset, not thinset. Thinset is a mortar product. Mesh tape is used here because it’s easier to wipe flat, which makes a smaller joint in this situation. I’ve done the exact same thing with steel beads. If you use paper tape you have to wipe REALLY tight, which can either tear the tape, bunch the tape, or pull the tape- and chances are you still have a proud joint from the corner. Mesh is just less hassle, and plenty strong here with the con-fill. I use Durock for this situation.

  • @ro_yo_mi
    @ro_yo_mi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    In another of your videos, you compared the merits of both mesh and paper tape saying: mesh tape is really only good for very small repairs and you preferred using paper everywhere especially for overhead structural wall components. In this video, you used mesh tape on the overhead. Can you elaborate on why you choose mesh tape for this solution instead of paper?

    • @andI201d
      @andI201d 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      because its being blended in with the already painted wall. mesh tape is for repairs/patches because its sticky and then you throw mud on top. with paper you would have to put some mud on first, then the tape, then more mud. paper is best for new installations down the tapered/butt joints and inside corners

    • @Van_bya_river
      @Van_bya_river 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree I was kind of wondering the same. In one of the videos he explained that mesh tape flexes alot. And paper does not. If your patching a corner bead that has been moving alot why use mesh?

    • @MetalY2KMusic
      @MetalY2KMusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Van_bya_river like how he was describing in the segment where he noted that the corner bead should be able to move independently from the framing, this is the point. Like you said it flexes a lot, which it may need to at a given time. That prevents cracking and other issues

  • @KevinsDisobedience
    @KevinsDisobedience 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I prefer the vinyl beads. We glue them with aerosol adhesive and shot them with staples afterwards. I don’t care for the paper-faced beads because it’s too easy to nick the paper with a trowel or sander, and then you see that in the finish. Of course they are better than the old metal beads. Good job explaining the process. It doesn’t hurt to fill that crack with expandable caulking first, either.

On yet another comment he also said that all-purpose mud and FibaFuse could be used (or, less preferably, all-purpose and paper tape) instead of quickset and mesh tape. I think it's because using paper tape risks building out the corner too much while trying to cover it adequately.

      iMovie. Do I edit the movie on my computer at home? Or do I edit the movie on my iPhone with iMovie?

    Hey Ben, quick question. Is it the “proper way” to install these metal corner beads with screws in the first place? Sometimes I feel that staples “cheats” a solid hold on corner beads.

    I love your videos VC ! Question, Couldn't you put the mesh on along with the first coat after you refastened the metal corner? Just seems like it would be stronger that way....

    Do you sand between mud coats after putting the tape on? Or just until the end after the skim coat?

    I searched for a guide on repairing a damaged corner- not an inner corner or an outer corner, but the corner of a sheet that got kicked while hanging a door. Any recommendations for how to fix other than cutting a new section to patch?

    Hi Ben. I'm a big fan of your channel. I am having an unusual issue with a section of corner bead in a condo we just purchased. How can I send you a 10 second video to show you my problem so I could get your thoughts before I make a mistake with trying to correct it? Thanks!!

    Hey Ben, how would you fix a crack right on the corner? I don't know why it would split there!?

    Do you need primer after this before applying paint?

    I personally prefer the steel beads like that with the little holes in them over paper beads, but you can’t be lazy and need to put lots of screws in them

    Please do a video on how to fix a section of paper tape that didn’t get a good bond to the wall and cracked on the edge of the tape or even pealed up as it dried. I’ve been doing a remodel and have been having trouble with small sections of my butt joint tape not bonding well to the wall even though it binds fine to the tape

    I use both metal and paper beads.... but I’m not sure I agree with the theory that paper beads won’t crack because they’re not fastened to the framing , just to the drywall itself. While this is true, the drywall is fastened to the framing so if the wood starts to move or twist, the drywall that’s screwed to it is going to move and twist.... therefore the bead is going to move and twist.

    Would the perforated steel beads work better giving something for the mud to key into and also back filling.

    And sometimes when you screw one side the other cracks 😜and taping the bead helps it from re-cracking

    Why in this case did you use mesh tape instead of paper tape which you almost always use you said in another video on a structural joint ?

      It's fiberglass, tape can tear-it's only paper. A crack means its already moving and the mesh is way stronger to bind the two edges with.
