That was a funny story; a fart worth $3,000. Probably the most expensive gas I heard of…😂 A story I had experienced: years ago I took American students to China; one got fell down to the floor so I had to take him to do an X-ray after a couple of days due to his shoulder pain; the whole process of getting the X-ray and diagnosed was done in less than 3 hours with about a $40 bill. He even did not get any prescription or treatment; the doctor just told him that to take a rest for his shoulder since my student was young, the doctor told him no worries. My student was so nervous before I took him there because he thought it would be at least a $5000 medical bill (of course in the U.S. it would be).
Hi Chris, glad to know your father in law eye surgery went well and he has fully recovered. You said hospital people said it would have cost 3 times for tourists, did they give you an explanation? Is it because tourists cannot ask for assistance programs to pay the hospital bill? Please advise and thank you.
This is why the government needs to stop guaranteeing and subsidising insurances. It’s driving the healthcare costs to the absolute maximum the insurance companies are willing to cover. Which is the maximum the government is willing to back. The artificial inflation of healthcare costs in the US is honestly so terrifying. But I’m glad the surgery and other treatments went well and your father-in-law is all good now!
Genuine question, why didn't father-in-law fly back to China to do the surgery? I ask because I have a family friend who scheduled cataract surgery (sure it's different from retina surgery) within a week in China and paid less in total even with 2 nights stay than what it costs in the US for a single premium lens (not including surgery room etc etc etc). Glad FIL is doing fine now though!
This is normal. My friend’s father came to travel to the United States. Suddenly, his heart was unwell. He drove back to Canada overnight to see a doctor, but he didn‘t want to be in the United States.
I watched another video which explained the hospital in the US will only charge you less than 10% of the bill, around 10% will be paid by insurance if your have, and the rest will be considered as bad debts. no idea if it is true.
Depending on insurance coverage and if the service provider is in network. Coverage could be from 50-90% after deductible. Low deductible and higher % coverage insurance is more expensive. Usually government or large company employers contribute a large portion of insurance premium. but small company employers may not pay or pay small portion for insurance. That's why tens of millions American don't have medical insurance because it's very expensive. Without employer's contribution, an individual may have to pay over a thousands $ each month for relatively low deductible and higher coverage insurance for 1 person. For family insuance (spouse and children), the price is more than double.
Regarding bad debt, if you cannot pay your own balance due, your medical debt will be transferred to debt collector who will chase after you everywhere. The debt recored impacts your credit score and further negatively impact your qualification for loans to buy car, house, etc. or for credit card.
If your in-law is considered low-income (typically below 133% FPL), probably they are eligible for Emergency Medicaid, depending on which state you are in.

About the deposit thing, China used to NOT have it until there were too many bad debts😂The hospitals can't take the money back except by suing the patients. However, doctors in China are expected to have very high moral standards. Suing patients over small debts will damage their reputation. People never think further, enough bad debts can easily break the financial system of a hospital. Deposit is not a pleasant thing, but still better than a broke hospital.
