'Cara Pulau Kita' (Our Island, Our Way) - SHORT FILM

The time has come! Drum roll please 😁
Presenting 'Cara Pulau Kita' (Our Island, Our Way), a short film created by the people of Pulau Sibu, Johor. This light-hearted film casts light on some of the challenges they face on the island and showcases how their unity empowers them to overcome these obstacles as a community. From scripting to shooting and even directing, they did it all!
It began with a series of workshops coordinated by local film production house Apparat, and co-facilitated by Fairuz Sulaiman from Sekolah Main Wayang at the island's community hall in May-June 2024. The islanders explored what they love and what concerns them about their island. From those reflections, they crafted the theme, developed characters, and brought their story to life in front of the camera. Throughout the process, our Research Assistant, Abidah Zaaba, aided them in refining their scripts, while Dain Said and Nandita Solomon from Apparat mentored them in their actor and director roles. For this film, we had hired Apparat to work on the overall production including the final screenplay development, and on location and post-production activities.
Despite the short time available for completing the film from scratch, the dedication and teamwork from everyone involved made it all possible. We take this opportunity to thank all the islanders who acted, and who were part of the production crew, the Apparat team (Dain, Nandita, Carmen, Fairuz, Megat, Dani), and the village head. It's been an incredible experience for MareCet to have had this opportunity to work with everyone throughout the entire journey of organizing and coordinating this entire undertaking to its completion.
