What a song...what a man...what a genius. His voice and his lyrics are remarkably beyond his years. Let's hope Neil Hannon continues to grace us for many, many years to come.
i guess Im asking randomly but does any of you know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid lost the password. I would love any tips you can offer me!
@Brooks Maddox Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site on google and Im in the hacking process now. Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
It was one of our favorite song, my husband and I. One of the first album we bought as a couple, almost 30 years ago. I lost him, 16 months ago, he died, defeated by a cancer. Our life was the best I've ever had. But I miss him horribly.
Music is great. It puts us in another state of mind, gives us the opportunity to feel our emotions, sometimes emotions we haven't felt before, and although I have only heard like 20ish Neil Hannon songs it seems so often he puts forward these wonderful feelings of hopefulness, gratefulness, love. Feelings that are so needed today, and likely throughout history. It is a very high calling and he executes his aspirations through his music very well. This life is the best we've ever had, if ever there was message worth spreading, this is it.
Just perfection in a song: And when we die, Oh, will we be That disappointed or sad If heaven doesn't exist, what will we have missed? This life is the best we've ever had.
Don't forget the most important part - his arrangements. His use of classical ensembles added so much to the pieces and distinguished The Divine Comedy from any other band.
BIAS ALERT: The greatest band of the last 20 odd years with one of their masterpieces. Neil deserves so much more recognition for what he has achieved in music
you can tell his is tired but he gives everything hes got and hopefully he will be producing fantastic inspiring songs like this for many many years to come
[Verse 1] Tonight we fly Over the houses The streets and the trees Over the dogs down below They'll bark at our shadows As we float by on the breeze [Verse 2] Tonight we fly Over the chimney tops Skylights and slates Looking into all your lives And wondering why Happiness is so hard to find [Bridge] (We'll fly) Over the doctor, over the soldier Over the farmer, over the poacher Over the preacher, over the gambler Over the teacher, over the writer Over the lawyer, over the dancer Over the voyeur Over the builder and the destroyer Over the hills and far away [Verse 3] Tonight we fly Over the mountains The beach and the sea Over the friends that we've known And those that we now know And those whom we've yet to meet [Verse 4] And when we die Oh, will we be that Disappointed or sad If heaven doesn't exist What will we have missed This life is the best we've ever had
thankyou for posting this beautiful song and neil hannon thank you i feel so grateful o have listened to you , you have enriched my life, thank you Sincerely
Yes, what a song. Inspired lyrics "..will we be that disappointed or sad? If heaven doesn't exist, what will we have missed? This life is the best we've ever had...."
the late Benjamin Lo-Fi once had this on too loud in a Kensington bedsit, and the gentleman below opened his window and shoved up a snooker cue with a note on the end. The note said, 'Please, turn Hannon down a touch, for I have veterinary exams in the morn...yours, Charles Dumbarton.' Glinting behind glass, Benjamin saw the note, and accorded with the soon-to-be vet's wishes. He still enjoyed his music, and Dumbarton passed hooves and fetlocks, with distinction. I think we'll all agree that that's a happy ending all round.

Tonight we fly There's a thought Like all Divine Comedy stuff this song is beautifully constructed and gladdens.the heart Well mine anyhow Brings back some really happy memories Hope fior you too

I wish someone would lay Pippin‘s song from the battle on the Pelennor fields over this crazy-ass beat and mount it into a video for comparison! It would be similarly driven poetry!
I just noted one commentator suggesting Neil could sing a shopping list and it would sound great!v well here is a titanic challenge I think will be beyond even Neil- The Horst Wessel Song! Thats it!
I love the song but can someone please tell me what the song is referring to when it starts with 'Tonight we fly' what does he mean? Are they dying? or are they in a hot air balloon? or is it nothing like that, and just abstract? Thanks
@thehornypuppy I find it rather silly that anyone would imply this song rips off Led Zeppelin (because of one solitary line of lyrics) when Zep's first couple of albums contain MANY rearranged old blues standards and outright lifts from other songs without ANY credit for the original authors.
Oh God, mea culpa, that's it isn,t it?; I am guilty! Guilty of thinking this fellow was a one hit wonder with National Express. I did write down a few words on here, of how that bright little number brought my 'special evening' on a National Express coach back in all its horror, But... this guy is 'expletive deleted! brilliant, the words add up to something, not just keeping the silence at bay. Well that's it- wish I could sing!

No words can justify the beauty of the divine comedy and this piece of brilliance.
Oh, what a master piece!!
you can tell his is tired but he gives everything hes got and hopefully he will be producing fantastic inspiring songs like this for many many years to come
Fantastic!!!!!!! Divine Comedy FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Superb and his collaboration with Joby Talbot - his arranger - has been beautifully fruitful
[Verse 1]
Tonight we fly
Over the houses
The streets and the trees
Over the dogs down below
They'll bark at our shadows
As we float by on the breeze
[Verse 2]
Tonight we fly
Over the chimney tops
Skylights and slates
Looking into all your lives
And wondering why
Happiness is so hard to find
[Bridge]
(We'll fly)
Over the doctor, over the soldier
Over the farmer, over the poacher
Over the preacher, over the gambler
Over the teacher, over the writer
Over the lawyer, over the dancer
Over the voyeur
Over the builder and the destroyer
Over the hills and far away
[Verse 3]
Tonight we fly
Over the mountains
The beach and the sea
Over the friends that we've known
And those that we now know
And those whom we've yet to meet
[Verse 4]
And when we die
Oh, will we be that
Disappointed or sad
If heaven doesn't exist
What will we have missed
This life is the best we've ever had
thankyou for posting this beautiful song and neil hannon thank you i feel so grateful o have listened to you , you have enriched my life, thank you Sincerely

This magnificent, soothing voice and a beautifully worded song, makes for great listening. Victor Berquez from Australia.
I think that this song is so beautiful and soothing, added to that is his magnificent voice. Victor from Australia.

But seriously, what fabulous beauty this guy conjours from the ordinary. Breathtaking!
Wow, he sounds fantastic live! Brilliant music and lyrics.
If this were by an American, it would be widely considered the greatest song of all time.
Ich liebe dieses Lied.
Te quiero, te quiero, te quiero. Gracias por esta canción.
Merci, merci et encore Merci.

the best voice!
This has always reminded me of an Ultravox song. I can just imagine Midge Ure singing it for some reason.
I love love love love this! And yesterday I had the privilege of hearing it live for the first time. Happy girl!!!

❤️
Even in his more 'UP' songs, he seems to inject a touch of melancholy. It makes them interesting.
Un Capolavoro
Top, top, top, top….
I don’t know what it is but Neil’s voice always reminds me of Jim Morrison ✌️💕
I just noted one commentator suggesting Neil could sing a shopping list and it would sound great!v well here is a titanic challenge I think will be beyond even Neil- The Horst Wessel Song! Thats it!
Saw them support Robbie Williams years back. Always thought Williams was shit and this was proper music.
Would be good to see a resurrection ?
I love the song but can someone please tell me what the song is referring to when it starts with 'Tonight we fly' what does he mean? Are they dying? or are they in a hot air balloon? or is it nothing like that, and just abstract? Thanks
I think he's driving his (and ours) inner metaphor over the roofs or... are you suggesting it has anything to do with balloons, joints & fever?
Thanks, 'inner metaphor' sounds about right :)
It's just a great metaphor to reflect on our existence / lives....and to realise how wonderful it really all is.
Sex.
We fly in our hearts an dreams. Oh to sleep…..

genius
This would be perfect in the snowman cartoon
