  • Honda #CL500 : First ride impressions
    Since my accident last year, this is my first ride on a bike for 18 months. What could possibly go wrong?
    Regardless of that this video focuses on why I bought the #CL500 and whether or not on the basis of a couple of rides, does it fit my usage needs and expectations. Also, I'll try and make a case for its looks!

    The CL500 is the Hob Knob of bikes. It is not rare or exotic. but it is lumpy, granular, honest and very satisfying.

      Mr Fandango - how the devil are you? Well and thriving I hope. Ah yes, I forgot to do the biscuit comparison - I’ll have to get my act together next time around.
      Lumpy and granular? I like it! How about a ginger nut? Good for dunking?
      I shall do more biscuit research and report back 😋
      All the best, cheers, Phil.

      Good morning Mr. Neutral, thank you very much. I'm looking forward to getting the bike (and myself) very dirty over the next months and years. I reckon the CL looks better when it's grubby - what do you think? The leg continues to improve so I'm going bungee jumping this afternoon followed by ski-jumping at the local dry slope. Oh, I then I woke up -)

    Great video, good and real. I got the dark green one and put 2,000 miles on in 2.5 months.
    Love it so far. Traded in a Honda 1100cc Rebel DCT for it with 14,600 miles. Now I'm taking all my turns at least 15 miles faster . The CL is very nimble and 100lds lighter. Fits my needs a lot better. It feels more mechanical and tool like. Great handling.

    Great video, and good information, I been considering the cl as a replacement for my adv. Bike since I been doing more back roads than long distance touring lately, What I been noticing from a lot of the comments that is a love or hate kind of Bike ,I do like it, and also like the fact that is also almost 20lbs lighter than the cb500x plus it should have a nicer low center of gravity, thanks for sharing

    • @80eightReviews

      Hello Mr Ferkuzuel, good to hear from you and many thanks for stopping by. It's good to know you enjoyed the video and found it useful.
      I'm now around 1,500 miles and I'm still really enjoying it. It spends most of its time getting grubby on little back roads - the kind that have grass growing in the middle of them and lots of gravel or mud. And it's a lot of fun. Also, as I said in the video, while I don't mistreat it I'm also not so precious about taking it on such roads. It's so easy to handle as well, the seat height, weight and handlebars just make it super-easy to throw around while also giving confidence on roads less travelled.
      It's not an object of desire sure, but it's a friendly, bouncy little thing on the right roads. Hope that helps, all the best, cheers, Phil.

    Congratulations in returning to the fold, motorbikes do have a way of getting into your blood, skin and shin bone 😯
    My pal had a similar experience and very thankfully suffered only a broken collarbone due to a) avoiding a collision with the errant car through course correction onto a conveniently placed patch of smooth grass, then b) discovering said smooth grass was providing cover for churned up mud and tractor tracks! But he did get off relatively lightly though, as far as a 6'4" 16 stone pensioner could be expected.
    His reaction to returning to the saddle was very similar to yours in terms of giving up a near life-long interest but I'm pleased to say that within 6 months a TDM 900 was welcomed into his garage.
    I wish you both many more happy days of pootling around on motorbikes. And am keen to discover a lot more of your hidden roads in Northumberland and I will take advantage of Otterburn Mills' cafe's late 1960's menu offerings, in particular it's Liver & onions or corned beef hot pot. Hearty meals now rarely seen in a modern cafe's offerings.

      Keep an eye out then for a little orange bike in Northumberland and give me a wave and you’ll know it’s me in the Otterburn cafe as I’ll be having the vegetarian option 😉

    I bought this in green in May 2023. I love it for all the reasons you state. It only goes out in the dry, but on the few occasions, I have been caught out in the rain, it is a bit of a dirt magnet. I've got the Travel Pack and just love taking this motorcycle on bumpy (dry) B Roads. The suspension is a dream, and ooh, that light clutch. I do wonder if the new Honda E Clutch can be done as a retrofit, if/when I get mobility limitations

    • @80eightReviews

      Afternoon Farhan, it's great to hear from a fellow CL owner - and good to know you're still enjoying it. I might consider the travel pack actually (or rather just the pannier rail and bag) as there is absolutely nowhere (as you know) to store anything & I hate using rucksacks. Like you, I love the clutch and the total ease of use - it's brilliant.
      The e-clutch does sound interesting actually and it should be a better solution than say DCT - I'm sure Honda will be spreading it across the range over the next few years. If you get to have a go of it, let me know as I'd be interested to get your thoughts.
      Anyway, thanks for stopping by Farhan, all the best, cheers, Phil.

    Excellent production as always. Think you made the right choice over one of the new (unproven) Triumph 400 variants. I also like the CL.. omission of centre stand compatibility put me off a bit but that was about it. I clicked the thumb down by mistake - corrected it though hopefully!

    • @80eightReviews

      Good afternoon Robster, how are you doing? Thanks for dropping by. And yeah, While I'm sure the new Triumph 400's will be fab & reliable, when you're after something to abuse, thrash and get dirty, a basic Honda is always a good way to go regardless of what it looks like.
      Plus, not not feeling bad about any of the above kinda precludes the Triumphs for me as they are a bit too nice! And nice is Adele, whereas I much prefer PJ Harvey :-)
      A centre stand would be nice I agree - with the exhaust / cat routing it would be difficult though, so I've dug out my old dirt bike scissor stand for home based maintenance.

    Hey Phil, nice choice! It's a bike that's been on my radar too but no more room in the garage 😢 I love the style, just a basic motorbike! I wish they did a 500 single, that would be interesting 😊Like you, I really like that tubular swing arm. As I recall, both of my first bikes (BSA C15 and A65) had tubular swing arms. Shame about the flat tyre though, I had a rear puncture on one of my bikes about a month ago ........ £165 later 😮Anyway, enjoy the beast and stay safe. Best regards, Phil (Somerset)

      Morning Phil, how are you doing? No more room in the garage? Oh well, that's not a bad problem to have is it ! Yeah, basic is good though and the idea of a 500ish single by Honda would get me quite excited! I loved the XBR500 when that was around. Maybe they will develop one as singles do seem to be a thing again these days. And yes, more tubular swing-arms please :-) I missed the british-bike era but I've always liked BSA's - I'd get an old A10 if it had electric start oh and I knew what I was doing, which I don 't.

      Good morning Renato, thanks for dropping by and a Happy New Year to you. It's good to know you enjoyed the review. With respect to the looks, as I sort of alluded to it's seems that the 'only' attractive bike these days is the 'Bonneville' look and undoubtably they are lovely but it doesn't mean everything else is excluded. The CL is a little eccentric and partly industrial looking which I personally think is very interesting. People didn't like the Lloyds of London Building, Sydney Opera House or a million other examples and now they are revered. Not that I'm saying the CL is up there with Sidney Opera House of course!
      I suspect the CL isn't selling too well and may very well be dropped in another year or two at which point it will start to assume 'cult' status. Or maybe I'm just biased as I like it so much :-)

      Hello and thanks for stopping by, glad you enjoyed the video!
      I’ve never ridden the Interceptor (Royal Enfield not the old Honda I assume!) so I can’t really comment between the two bikes. The CL is nimble, comfortable and cheap to run so works well. All I would say and based on when I used to commute on bikes here in the UK, is that the Interceptor is almost too nice for commuting! Also, the Interceptor needs servicing a lot more often I think? At the end of the day if you need a bike for getting to work in all weathers cheap, cheerful and reliable is probably the way to go. Then again, I used to commute to work on a Gpz900R back in the day 😀
      Hope that helps, cheers, Phil.

I like the phrase “sheep lane ready steed” that could be a new sub-genre of bikes I think and all manufacturers should have one. Your scrambler should be getting a nice patina now I’d imagine after six years ?

      @@80eightReviews In December of 1970 I had a flat front tire on the way to Cardiff to sell my 69 Bonnevile . The crash on what was called "the Tumble" locally left me with a broken neck .. The DOctors said no bikes ,motorcycles, horse back riding, or skiing for the rest of your life , I was 20 and have done all of the above over the years since then .The hardest on my Neck was playing conga drum in a Rock band in Copenhagen called "Doctor Dopo Jam" the spring of 1971.(Another story ) . Hey Jim, good to hear from you and thanks! It's very nice to be back on a bike again I have to say.
      As for the V7 850, I sold it / px for the ADV 350 Scooter earlier this year as it was clear I wasn't going to be able to ride it and it had already been in storage for 6 months. At the time, the third operation on my leg hadn't been suggested let alone scheduled so although I can just about ride now I had no idea back then. If things continue to improve I'll certainly be looking at Guzzi's again!
      All the best, cheers, Phil.

    Low pressure motorcycling … Luv it! Hey Phil, so stoked to see you back in the saddle. Indeed, your enthusiasm and verve (and courage!) are palpable.
    So, 73kg??? Wtf buddy, they run out of jammie dodgers and brown ale in Newcastle, lol? And blue eyes, 😂!
    Seriously though, looks like a beauty (crackin’) little bike. Gotta wonder though, did you consider at all going back to the Guzzi v7? Such a lovely, characterful, aesthetically sublime and yet tame steed? I know you luv’d your Centenario and, who wouldn’t? I finally traded by v7 for a bigger, more Highway-worthy traveler but confess to missing her badly.
    So glad to see you back!

      Mr. Brooks - good to hear from you again, hope all is well in your world. Thanks so much for your kind comments - being back on a bike is some sort of milestone and I can kinda just get on with things now.
      As for the 73kg, that’s as nature intended (sorry if that’s created an unwelcome image) 😀! Blue eyes make all the difference actually - gotta be worth 2-3 HP at least!
      I did try the V7 but alas, I couldn’t get my right foot on the peg but I’m hopeful there will be further mobility progress next year. Either way though, I’m very happy with the CL - it does the job of bouncing around crumbling little roads perfectly.
      So you sold your Guzzi - what did you get for the highway? At some point though I sense another Guzzi will make its way to your heart and garage…
      All the best, cheers, Phil.

      Yep, my 2019 Guzzi V7 was such a lovely machine for scooting out on country B-roads to the occasional little cafe. But here in Eastern Ontario you really need to get onto highways to get anwhere fast which, unfortunately, I still need to do from time to time. Alas, I finally succumbed to the dark side and now have a ‘23 R1250GS. I’ve only had her a short while but so far she’s proving to be everything reviewers say: big, heavy but incredibly nimble, balanced, torqey, quick, easy to manœuvre - esp at slow speeds - but with ample weight, power and wind protection can run the big roads without being pushed around by trucks and traffic. Yet still enjoyable on country roads discovering hidden cafes. Doesn’t have the charm or character of the V7. But being able to safely ride to see kids, grand kids and friends 100 miles away is a worthwhile sacrifice.
      Thanks for continuing to create inspiring, informative and clever content, Phil. Always looking forward to your next creation.

      Thanks for the vote of confidence on the content - I try to do something different each time and push the quality side of things with each one - which doesn’t necessarily translate to ‘views’ but as you’ve probably guessed - that’s not really the point 😀

      Hello and greetings from the UK. Many thanks for stopping by and it's good to know you found the videos interesting. The ADV 350 (and no doubt the X-ADV) does ride very much like a bike and while it's not as exciting as a bike everything about it is so easy and practical that it makes every journey interesting.

    Great review/video/presentation style Phil... subscribing straightaway. I stumbled across it while considering adding a CL to the stable, ie, K1600gt, RD400 and Blackbird (the latter about to be sold to make room).
    Also on my shortlist is the V7, which I really like, but my priority is being well suited to very bumpy lanes and B roads and I guess the CL is a better option for that. What do you think? Im 64 and quite a big chap and so far have no issues manhandling big bikes.

      Good afternoon, great to hear from you & thanks very much for the sub - great to know you enjoyed the review!
      As for your question, having owned both bikes and enjoyed them both on back roads, there is a difference in that the V7 is so lovely and charming and “special” that you’ll treat it nicely - in the sense you probably won’t mess about in bad weather, gravel and puddles! Whereas with the CL you will!! From an objective perspective, both handle great, the Guzzi has slightly crashy suspension over bumps and the CL is a little mushy. Performance wise, both are very similar even if the delivery of that performance is completely different!
      There’s much more space on the V7 though, even though the seat height is low like the CL. If you’re big / tall it’s worth sitting on them, especially the CL to see where your knees end up! So I reckon if you fit the CL and want something to really mess about on in all weathers, then it’s the one. If it’s something special for dry bumpy roads and don’t mind crashy suspension, it’s the Guzzi!
      Hope that helps, cheers, Phil.

      @@80eightReviews Thanks for taking the time for such an informative response Phil...really helpful and inspired me to go out and test ride a CL straight after!
      What a brilliant little bike....ticked all the boxes for me. As an exiled Geordie living in Peterborough, I was able to test the bike on the most atrocious of roads (over the fens...the most severe subsidence) and was amazed at how well it soaked up the bumps and pot holes, while still having great handling in the twisties. I found myself shooting off down an odd dirt track which it handled admirably.
      Performance was ample for my needs...I was surprised at how zippy it was.
      It also fit me perfectly - it had high, brown seat fitted which at first felt a bit hard, but I stopped noticing that after a short while. I could stand up pretty comfortably too, which enabled pretty quick progress over the worst of humps and bumps on the subsided lanes. Only negatives is the visibly of the instrument panel in sunlight and absence of a rev counter (which I like to have to see what's going on) but that did not detract too much.
      I also considered the new RE Bullet which I love the look of (in all black) but the peppiness and fun factor of the CL trumps it.
      Your conclusion is spot on....the CL looks to be the one for me...icing on the cakes is Honda have £500 off for the next few weeks. Was gonna test the Guzzi, but don't think I will bother....maybe a one to add to the stable at a later date!
      Thanks again and best wishes Phil, Paul

      Hey Paul, that’s great news! I think the CL is almost like a proper “throwback” bike in terms of what you can do with it - tarmac, a bit of gravel, any weather, commuting, total reliability and you don’t have to be too precious about it! So you do more with it. And what you do with it is the important thing. Plus as it’s so easy to get out of the garage it will get used more. Compared to your other bikes also it will feel like a toy!
      Must admit, every time I go and look at a RE close up I can’t help but think they are a little bit shonky and are more a sunny Sunday ride only.
      I’ve now swapped my CL for a CRF Rally because I wanted to get back into green laning. That’s no indictment of the CL as it’s brilliant it’s just the CL made me realise what I’d been missing the last two years.
      The CL continues to be great VFM and as you say £500 off for a bike that will survive the apocalypse is amazing.
      Let me know how you get on Paul, all the best, Phil.

Pretty amazing value I reckon!

I’m a cheapskate though so I’m going stick a good old fashioned mudflap onto the front - it may even kinda suit it assuming I squint first 😀
      I’ll be keeping the ADV as it’s so terrifically useful and cheap to run but also because due to my dodgy leg which doesn’t bend too well, it’s way more comfortable than the CL or any other bike for that matter. Bikes for me are now just for short / fun rides which I think suits the CL perfectly.

    Cheers!

    • @80eightReviews

      Hey good morning and happy Christmas! That's a good question actually! The first thing to say is that I'm keeping the ADV350 along with the CL500. Now taking my mobility out of the equation which means the Scooter is much more comfortable for me than the CL (or any other bike) the pros for the ADV is that it's like the easiest machine to ride, yet at the same time is still fun to ride, especially around corners. Now it's a more 'gentle' kind of fun compared to a bike but what it allows the rider to do is to enjoy the broader aspects of the ride and environment more - or at least it does for me. It's also insanely practical with all the storage, it's economical and has good weather protection.
      A bike though is much more visceral and I still, personally, love the connection between revs, power and gears and really 'using' an engine, whereas on the scooter you just have to accept what it does. On the other hand, riding the scoot also means the rider isn't pushed into being 'competitive' with either themselves or other riders - which is a good thing.
      I'm going to use the ADV to tour Europe next year and I can't wait. On previous trips it's always been about the bike and the roads, whereas with the scooter I'll be able to take my time, relax, take my camera gear and therefore have other aspects of the trip to enjoy.
      The ADV and perhaps all scooters are low pressure and easy riding. It's not about pride of ownership or glorious aesthetics but more like your favourite socket set that you've had for years and you just know it will always get the job done with no fuss.
      Is there a place for both in someone's garage? Absolutely!
      Hope that helps, all the best, cheers, Phil.

      Good afternoon Mr ThreeB78 and thanks for stopping by. Comparing it to the V7 750 - obviously they are very different in terms of power delivery and feel but I'd say they were very equal on the road. The Guzzi possibly is slightly faster from a top speed perspective but I'd say the CL has a bit more urgency about it and almost a defined power band. The Guzzi though is certainly a lot less buzzy at higher speeds and having done some long trips on the Guzzi where cruising at 80MPH was absolutely fine, the same on the CL would be more frenetic! That's also got a lot to do with riding position and physical dimensions also.
      Either way though, both will top 100mph in the right conditions - one will be buzzing, the other kinda galloping if that makes any sense!
      I like both bikes actually!

Although I didn’t ride the 850 very much due to my accident, the 750 was more charming I think.
      The CL is a good, fun bike to use and abuse but it will never have the special feeling of the V7. I bought my CL as a stepping stone back to bikes but otherwise would I have bought one? My right leg and knee were broken and my left foot, but I'm lucky to be alive. I was in hospital for 2 months & it's now 3 months ago and I'm still not walking.

      Hey Glideman, yes, I remember you dropping by around the time of my accident. What can I say - I’m so sorry to hear about your accident, it sounds absolutely awful. Aside from the physical aspects are you doing OK? These things can take some time to process, accept and deal with.
      In terms of my own rehab, well, I had more surgery 2 months ago to try and improve the range of movement in my knee and things are going the right way. My (unaided) walking is much better and I’m working on getting rid of the limp, plus inclines and steps are much easier - I’m also just starting to ride a push bike again. Given what happened it’s a miracle as I came close to losing the leg but will it be ever like it was before? Not at all - and most of the time I’ve come to terms with that. Pain is manageable most of the time, I’m walking 4 miles a day and feel a lot more confident getting about.
      For info at 3 months out I was still using two crutches and unable to walk without them but shortly afterwards, x-rays showed the bone was healing and then I was allowed to weight bear. And once you get to that stage you can start to push the physio regime and things start to improve. You should be close to that now I imagine? Of course you’ve got the added difficult on the broken left foot but presumably that’s in a boot and is mending ok? I did my left collarbone also which meant I could rely on my LHS either which as you know is a right pain!
      The three month point is a difficult stage to be honest. It will improve. Give me a shout if that would help but I’m the meantime, stay 💪, eat well!
      Despite the circumstances, great to hear from you and stay in touch, cheers, Phil.

      Hey Danny, good to hear from you. I’ve never ridden the Enfield 650 so I can’t say really. I do occasionally look at them but the short service interval and dealer issues here in the UK sorta put me off - also if I wanted that style of bike, I’d get a Moto Guzzi! But that’s just me and lots of people really rate them. All the best, cheers, Phil.

    Wow! What made you go from a Guzzi to a Honda? They are at the opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of character.
    Also, any reason you haven't been doing anymore more videos on your Guzzi?

    • @80eightReviews

      Hello Mr UX, how are you doing? Good to hear from you and as you might imagine there is a long and boring story! The short one is a horrible accident nearly two years ago which has left me with much reduced mobility and flexion in my knee - so much that for 12 months I couldn't get my right leg on to the footpeg of the Guzzi or indeed any bike with a normal riding position. So 12 months ago, I sold my Guzzi and CRF and bought a scooter - an ADV350 as it was about the only thing I could physically ride and also, emotionally, I needed to find out whether I still wanted to ride.
      Anyway, 9 months ago I had more surgery to improve the knee flexion and it seems to have worked and I can now just about get on a bike and ride one. The only bike that really fitted me and was light and slim enough was...The CL500...Everything else I tried was too heavy, too high or just painful. Even now I can only ride the CL for two hours before my knee gives in.
      As things have improved though I'm still thinking a Guzzi is on the cards. The CL though is a great fun, little bike and while it's very different to the Guzzi, the simplicity and the fact it's not a bike a feel precious about, is really refreshing. It has a lot of character - just different to the Guzzi!
      Hope that makes sense, all the best, cheers, Phil.

      Sorry to hear about your knee. Did you injure it because you didn't have knee armor protector or did you twist it the wrong way? Praying for your full recovery.

    • @80eightReviews

      Hello again, well, I was wearing armour but no amount of protection, short of some sort of Star Trek style force field would have helped! Head on / offside collision with a car with my right leg taking the impact resulting in my lower leg spinning round 90 degrees, an open femur fracture and around 10 fractures in my knee. 3 x surgery later and I can walk 7 miles a day and now getting back in to bikes - I couldn’t ask for more so I’m very happy with the recovery especially when losing it or not walking at all was a possibility.
      With all that in mind, just five minutes on the little CL makes me very happy! All the best, cheers, Phil.

    I had the use of one over a weekend I really liked it the only thing I found was the riders foot pegs where a bit in the way when you put your feet down
    The brown seat is a must as the standard seat is too hard
    Great video as usual 😊👍

    • @80eightReviews

      Evening Henry, good to hear from you and thanks for dropping by. Yeah I’ve found the same with the pegs and the simple fix would have been to allow them to swivel upwards. Still, it’s not a deal breaker. As for the seat, I’ve actually got the standard seat also and although I haven’t sat on it, it does look like a plank with a vinyl wrap 😀
      Anyway, thanks for your comments, glad you enjoyed the video, all the best, Phil.

      Good evening Mr. DervMan - great to hear from you again and hope all is well with you. As for the ADV, yes, I’m going to be keeping it as it’s just so useful, handy and economical. Plus it’s quite good fun! So yes, I totally get where you’re coming from with you X-ADV.
      Practically speaking, the scoot will always be much more comfortable for me over distance especially as I want to head over to Europe next year. Scooters have won me over! And don’t get me started on the subject of underseat storage 😀

    Many congrats Phil at achieving, riding a 'motorcycle' again, it is what you wanted to achieve and that must help the old grey matter feel good too! Felt sorry for the 'old wife' you were sitting on whilst you leered at the new girlfriend though, watch-out, the Japanese eyes squinting at little Miss Orange Blossom were down-right evil!!!

      But yeah, it’s so nice to be back on a bike again and while it won’t be the same as before it now feels like a turning point and a good milestone for many different reasons.

    I hate the gas tank, the old cl in the poster behind you if what a proper tank should look like. This styling tank and the cl exhaust makes it look like you are sitting in a V.

    • @80eightReviews

      Evening James, yeah, it’s not the best is it? Sometimes I think the tank looks like a melted sweet oozing over the frame rails 😀 Still, it’s nice and slim and from above it’s quite nice.
      The interesting thing about the original CL is the other (non exhaust) side - it looks like some right shonky old CB360 that no-one would take a second look at. Amazing what a nicely designed bit of chrome can do!
      Still, the new CL is good to ride and it looks much better when muddy. So that’s my excuse for not washing it.
      Thanks for stopping by, all the best, cheers, Phil.
