I've sold A7C II and jumped to S9. I much prefer Panasonic colors, LCD screen and IBIS is just insane. Those 3 things sealed the deal for me although A7C II is also a great camera. Nice comparison.
Contemplating that at the moment too. I upgraded from a Panasonic GX80 to the A7C II, however, didn't know that the A7C II stabilisation wasn't great at all. Plus, the colours on the Panasonic are a lot warmer and more contrast which I prefer!
It could be due to a number of reasons, I kept the white balance the same for both cameras and decided to keep the WB fine tune setting at 0 to have more "out of the box" settings for this video. But the lens can affect the colour as well as the ND filter (although if you take a look at the photo comparisons towards the end, they were taken with no ND and there is still quite a colour difference SOOC)
You really need to shift towards magenta out of the box it seems. The green isn't a skin tone issue at all. The yellow however is a skin hue issue. Almost nothing is a skin tone issue.
Both are nice cameras…thought the S9 video output edged out the A7Cii, though the Sony likely the better hybrid for a photographer simply as it has a small EVF, partial mechanical shutter (?) and has some level of weatherproofing. Choose your needs based on what you do. In US S9 plus lens $1800. A7Cii with-lens $2500..
My S5II often feels big and heavy so I want a smaller one for easy carry. I was excited when I first heard about the S9 but very disappointed when I learned that it doesn't have a hot shoe, only digital shutter and no headphone jack. I wish Panasonic could make a proper grip and add at least mechanical shutter and hot shoe, with a S9II.
I own the s5ii as well and ended getting the sony a7cr as the perfect walk around hybrid for travel etc. I wish lumix made the S9 a true hybrid camera with a view finder, mechanic shutter and ovf/EVF, it would have been so awesome
Been long time user of Lumix line (m43), and just got my s9 today. Fantastic camera but misses EVF. I also ordered Voigtlander 35mm ultron1.7 which fantastic lens under $400 -used.
The S9 is so compelling but I can't yet put my finger on what is it that doesn't quite convince me. Considering the price, I'm more inclined to the Canon R8. I'd love a comparison between these two.
Having bigger hands, if I had to pick only one of these cameras, I’d pick the S5ii. Love the S9 features but my hand cramps thinking about it and I can’t live without a mech shutter. That 18-40mm seems dope 👍
Very good video, thanks for this. Panasonic just launched a firmware for the S5ii to have the updated autofocus system that's in the S9, and I was wonderful whether if the S5ii will now have autofocus fast as A7iv,
Good review! Very informative on practical results and conditions 👍🏼 I'm not sure of their respective size, but I'd look at Tamron's 17-40/4 or 20-40/2.8 for such a comparison though 😉
Yes Sony doesn't have this functionality. It means that when you switch from let's say 4k60 to 4k30 on Panasonic it will automatically choose the right shutter speed to meet 180 degree rule whereas on Sony you would need to adjust this manually. Of course custom modes on modern cameras solve this issue as you can save predefined settings separately so not a big deal.
@@MrRafalEn Thank you bro, Panasonic do this in manual modes too? From what i understand when you switch 60FPS, it set shutter 120, when you switch 25FPS, it sets 50. Then you can choose whatever value you want. Actually good idea even it is not a big deal.
Yup. Standard profile is pretty bad. It could be corrected in camera messing with gamma values. Auto White balance is also never to be trusted on Sony which she is probably using. You just have to know how to set it up. Many reviewers just go all auto everything and kind of give Sony a bad name. For strictly photography the whole color science thing is pretty irrelevant
Yeah Sony leans a bit more towards green in standard picture profile. In the log footage though, it's very easy to adjust this as you can see the colours looks very similar from both cameras. You can also use the white balance fine tune setting to make it more magenta if you like, but for this video I kept the white balance the same for both cameras and thus the fine tune setting at 0 for both for a more "out of the box" setting.
A real shame the s9 doesn’t at least have an electronic first curtain - fingers crossed that if they ever make a mk2 that it will have it. The 18-40 looks great on it, and that super wide view is very appealing! Great review!
Sydney? I feel like seen lowlight l been travel there I miss that location I have a7cR and s5ii for video I choose s5ii but yea too big camera but s9 lack headphone jack is deal breaker for me😢
You have the exact same as myself . I own the s5ii and a7cr as well . I wish lumix gave the S9 a viewfinder , hot shoe and mechanical shutter. Hopefully they'll release a s9ii that's more well rounded.
Needing to add a grip to the S9 just to use the kit lens completely negates the compact size and all the sacrifices you have to make to get that small size. I bet the S9 would feel totally unbalanced with anything but a few small lens offerings. I would love to see you use the S9 with a 24-70mm f2.8 attached and hear what you thought after a few hours with it in your hands. I want to like the S9 but between no viewfinder, no hot shoe, needing a bulky add-on grip, and a lack of smaller lens options that fit the S9 profile, its just too many sacrifices. I do not find enough value in to be more than a glorified cellphone thats hard to hold. I think the S9 will find a swift end for most people after the novelty wears off a few weeks or months down the road when the lack of features starts to become clearer and the question of value will weigh heavy on pros and amatures alike.
Damn dude, who at Panasonic hurt you 😂 A bulky add on grip? It’s smaller than the Sony even with the grip.. Glorified cellphone camera? It easily outshines the Sony in video quality… Using it with a large bulky lens like a 24-70 negates any grip advantage the Sony has as you support it at the lens anyway… Having the option to not have a grip just gives you versatility, itmeans you can put a compact prime on it and it’s basically pocketable..
I think the color and stability of Lumix are better, but these two points can be processed through post-processing, and usually the log is shot and restored to 709 color instead of Sony's standard color... Some of the more important considerations are that post-processing is not possible Processing, for example, the a7cii has a mechanical shutter and hot shoe, you can use it to take pictures, the S9 cannot.
Sony needs a competitor to the 18-40 from Lumix.. I know Sony has the 16-35 f4 pz which is a fantastic lens, but being able to keep the camera super compact is a bonus for potability.
Yep, its just a sling bag from Uniqlo! So it doesn't have any padding or anything inside, but my camera was fine traveling like that all through Japan for a few weeks :D

The one thing for me that's missing is the EVF, and one thing that stops me from buying an S9 (as I do really want to find a small compact camera for travel as all of my other cameras are larger FF cameras, like the Z8 and the Zf). If the S9 goes on sale at some point for around $1k (without a lens) I might consider it, since I gues san EVF is not exactly critical, but one of "nice to haves" on my list). but for almost $1800 for the lens and camera, I'll probably just wait.

Just dropped some real-time insight. The S9 in Photo Mode with Hybrid Zoom goes up to 120mm. I can also confirm my Sigma 28-70 goes up to 218mm.

The s9 is so steady it almost look like it has a gimbal in some of the videos, that's crazy.
Where is the viewfinder on Panasonic S9? It's such a nice camera, it's a pity.
