One of my biggest regrets was being talked out of and just not getting the CompTIA A+ and W3Schools certificates while I was working my first job after ITT. If I had, it would have boosted my confidence on finding a job and just would have shortened the time it took to find another IT job. When I was in my 6 of 8 semester of ITT I got a job as a junior developer at an IT company in Valley Forge, Pa...after 3 years working there, I left due to overwork and verbal abuse. Having a few of those certifications would have made it easier to find a decent job...it took me a little over 3 years to get a new full time job in IT
Always love seeing never give up stories - it's tough out there 😅nice job getting back into the IT game after that 3 year grind 💚Job security has become such a priority for me these days...and it's something I didn't think about much until I had massive bills.
I just graduated with bachelor's in IT and did the same thing u did. Bare minimum and still in the top 10% in my school and still having a hard time getting a job.
@madhatistaken thanks, made it to a second interview working for virgin galactic tier 3 tech support but I haven't heard back yet. I like working in tech im just not sure what I want to do yet but I want to own a business someday lol. Gotta just keep tryn, the most successful people in life never gave up.
Hey man, I appreciate that your cyber advice is just good life advice. I fell for a lot of similar pitfalls. It's a rare thing at the moment to find reality driven content as compared to the mountains of "5 hacks" videos that will fix your life. Respect!
Honest advice that many need to hear. I plan to make a video similar to this. So many people pitch the get rich quick schemes. Thank you sir. We need more like you
A little late for me, but this will help someone. I spent 8 years pursuing an engineering degree while working retail, and even with all of that and a few certs, finding a job is still hard. I wish I dropped out of college or changed degree programs a lot sooner so I could get the actual job experience needed.
The key is to be early in a new area. New in Cyber whatever is better than certs. After something goes mainstream, the floodgates open and certs don't equate to talent. Trying to stand out in a bloated field like "cybersecurity" is hard unless you have real experience.
The job market is such a mix of stories. "I got an analyst job with just my security+" all the way to "I have 10 years IT experience, my CISSP, OSCP, PPTP, and I still can't find a job after 6 months"...Hard to read what's going on with all those stories though since there's a lot of factors 😅
To be fair, college’s often say with their degrees you can land the following careers: Administrator Engineer Manager Etc, I fell for that trash hook line and sinker! Told my wife well with this degree I should be able to land one of these careers and according to glass door, in our area should be making these wages. After the degree and applying to help desk position to take a pay cut so I could work my way up through the trenches once again(fun conversation to have with the wife with 2 kids and another one on the way; just incase you were wondering.) now have a pretty good security gig after working in the IT field in various roles after a few years.
At 8:26... why did you use the Teams sound? I had to check which one of my computers had a new Teams message and what conversation was it that I missed? :D Hey but in all seriousness Mr. Hat, great video! My H.S. grad is going down this same path with their college/career and this'll be some GREAT advice for them. Thanks!
Also how many certificates do you have or what is enough for a entry level position. Not saying that certificates is all you need but what do entry level positions desire
everyone say we have so much open position at cyber security market and yet very few company accept interns and barrier to get into this market is way way higher than you expect
I think there's a lot of demand still, probably less these past few years. But, the people applying to the lower "entry" level positions has grown and thus raised the bar to entry because you're competing with more people who could have that 1 or 2 certs you don't have or years of experience.
All great points however I think it's a little unrealistic for most people. I have a young kid with special needs and have switched careers to IT from a Paramilitary background. I have had to self teach and scrap but I made it from a T1 to a cybersecurity analyst in 3 years. I still play WOW, have time with my family, pay my bills, and overall have a good life. There is no one way to do this career and I think it's more import you check off the main boxes like setting realistic and dynamic goals, create a work life balance to avoid burnout, and just keep learning and applying practical knowledge.
Man it's almost as if you're describing my life completely, I'll quit league of legend and take that IT job ( I was supposed to graduate this year as well lol)thanks for this video!!!!!
Both of y’all get to work . NOW. Do SOMETHING. I was 25 and broke before joining the army as my last resort. I’m 32 now making 6 figures and honestly it’s not enough I still have to bust my freaking ass. HURRY UP! GET THE FUCK UP! BOTH OF YOU. Godspeed. 💪🏾🙏🏾.
Hey thanks for your videos, you where the hat drop that made me get my cyber security cert idea from a could to would. now i'm certified, and its my only certification with 12+ years of IT experience. my regret is not getting into a better tech school. although i met my now wife, and managed to get enough grants to graduate debt free in that school. so pros and cons, i just wish i had exposure to cyber security earlier. it would have changed my course in life greatly.
Video games definitely need to be limited. I think a set time limit works best, so forcing yourself to quit if you know you've play X amount of minutes that day. Also, only playing after putting in study time first in the day so the gaming time is at the end of your day.
I am currently enrolled in Coursera's Google Cybersecurity Course, it comes with a 'professional' certificate and a voucher for the security+ exam. With both of these certs do you think I could change careers? Currently breaking my back at a Manufacturing company
both these certs are good since the google cybersecurity course builds foundation for comptia securtiy+. but the current state of cybersecurity job is ' to get a job, you need relevant experience, but to get relevant experience, you need the relevant job'. personally i would say internships are the next step (which you could probably skip and go straight into IT jobs if you already know the people who would give you a chance). since most internships are for uni students, i would recommend the one from Josh Madakor (checkout his cyber course, which requires you to pass his exam to continue on with his internship) or Mosse cybersecurity institute (MCSI) remote internship. I already have my google cybersec cert, am currently in MCSI internship, and am planning to enroll in Josh's cyber course to accelerate my prep for Security+ exam. Then once im done with the exam, I would continue with his internship
Regret not trying to get into IT sooner - I'm rather established in my current role and trying to switch careers and be on a similar wage for my first IT role is difficult. Being a new parent and working full time makes having time for certs or projects difficult - *screams into void*
I was programming since 14, and breezed through all my comp sci courses. But in the past year I have not done a single programming project. Idk why, but all I do with my time is play PoE or counter strike. At least my studies are going fine. I’m graduating in May, and have zero plans on what to do after. A masters wouldn’t be bad since my family has the money. Right?
No one hasn’t really figured out after they graduate high school. Those kids who go straight to college and become doctors and lawyers are pretty miserable once they reach their mid-30s or early 40s because they never really got to live life. The important thing is that you get it figured out, and you live your best life. Just because you didn’t do it in your early 20s, doesn’t mean you can’t be happy at this point in your life whatever that appointment be.
Lmao this guy is so me, I quit my first year into computer science so glad I didn’t follow through Cybersecurity was the path for me 😂😂😂 this is too funny man
